Another huge earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand

from news report, the soil is very unstable and sandy.
Suitable for 2 short builds (2 story high is max).

Just shows the power of earthquakes. My thoughts go out to all the victims.

The message painted on the wall 1:32 in pretty much sums up the feelings of a lot of Christchurch people after 6 months of earthquakes and aftershocks and now this latest one, the final straw.

What a tragedy! They tell us to expect a major quake in the next 30 years, however, with the way things look I'm afraid it will be much sooner. The sad part is you can be fully prepared but still be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Watching the video, I don't think I would trust being in that gaping crack in the pavement. I certainly hope they don't give up hope on those in the CTV building. Miracles do happen.

Bad news. They seem to have called off searching the CTV building for survivors with something like 50 people still unaccounted for.

As I mentioned on the Thread in CE&P, my nephew knows people in this building (he used to work for CTV) and sadly several of his mates are among the missing.

I weep for our beautiful city; how can it ever recover? A picture of the Cathedral was the first photo I saw on Tuesday and it broke my heart. i was only back there at Christmas to stay with my family.

Thankfully my family are all safe but 1,000's of others are suffering tonight and for years to come.

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Christchurch.

Back at the turn of the 20th Century, over 100 years ago, it was home for our family, and it is still a place we love. I know the world will be glad to step up and help New Zealand help to rebuild. JAG and Dodson, our hearts reach out to you all in this difficult time. Do not lose heart.

My final update .... of New Zealand's 9/11 (while not of the same scale but NZ's a small country).

It appears that there are about 200 dead (they're still trying to identify the victims), with many more seriously injured. There are teams from New Zealand, Australia, Japan, United States, Singapore, Taiwan, United Kingdom and China helping with the search through the rubble.

New Zealand's 2nd biggest city will have to be rebuilt, but we'll do it!

Don't worry, Christchurch will rebuild Shep.

My thoughts to everyone involved. The news had wall to wall coverage for the first few days, and especially worrisome is the people in the language school above the tv station and for those whose homes have collapsed. My biggest worry for you folks is that autumn will soon be here, then winter. It'll take a lot of reconstruction, and the hardships for all in the days to come. (*8*) for everyone.

Red Cross has set up an appeal.

You can donate via credit card by clicking the donate link. I presume that includes overseas as well.
Generally, we're fairly well off in this country, so the need probably isn't as great as somewhere like the Haiti earthquake, but donations would be greatly accepted all the same. The biggest concern is the the huge number of people who have lost their homes, but insurance would cover most of that.

Yea, we all feel so sorry for all those young teenagers and young people who had just arrived in this country from Asia to learn English and make new lives, only to be killed a few days later.
