Another innocent black guy shot dead by police as he entered his own home

Here is something that my ex (black guy) experienced while with me.

My husband is white. Before him, I was dating a black guy. At the time, I was living in an all white neighborhood in the suburbs. One time, I had him over to help me plant a big-ass tree. He was a particularly muscular dude, so I figured he should be a big help to dig that big hole.

So, we were out there in 80s sunny weather sweating huffing and puffing digging a hole in my front yard. A police squad car pulled up. The cop conveniently ignored me and wanted to see his ID. Someone had called the police on my ex! Some Karen bitch was intimidated by a black guy helping her neighbor plant a tree so much that she called the police on him.

This was, of course, before everyone had a smartphone that could record at a whim so we didn't record it.

But my point is shit like that has been happening to black folks forever. Every black person knows what it's like to be followed around in a store. Every black person knows what it's like to be visiting a friend in white neighborhood and have someone calling the police on them.

I know what you're thinking. So what if the cop wanted his ID? What's the big deal? The big deal is in the 21st century, a black person still has to justify his existence. We were planting a tree for goodness sake. And he had to justify his existence and presence while planting a tree.

I fully realize most white people still don't believe such a thing just doesn't happen.

First I have been followed around a store by plain clothes security, they get paid to follow people. Another time I stopped by a coworkers house, we were outside talking when the cops rolled up. It seems that his wife didn't know who I was and thought that I was going to rob him. Then there was the time that I was driving to the garage and was pulled over for a burned out tail light, the cop called back up. We all have our stories about life. I just paid a fine of $150. for playing my radio "too loud". Terms such as "every black person" are an exaggeration, I am sure that it has happened to many, but not every black person.

The frightening and enraging part about this post is the flatout implication that black people will be fine if they just do what white people w/badges tell them. I see we are STILL only 2/3 human in this country. The rest of this post is silly, do you legitimately think black people want cops to kill more white people to even the score? (Referring to black deaths as a game perfectly highlights just how not seriously America takes this problem). Thats what you think will make us happy, MORE violent senseless death? Or is that just an attempt to neutralize our righteous and LONGSTANDING quest for equity and humanity?

I was responding to a complaint in another post that "this never happens to white people", my point is that more deaths at the hands of cops against anyone will not solve the problem. Obviously there is a propensity on the part of law enforcement to shoot without much reservation when it comes to blacks. The question is why cops today are so much more prone to act in this fashion.

Law enforcement has changed over time, cops today have a different attitude than they had years ago. Most act like this country is a big prison yard and they are the guards. I would caution anyone whatever race or color to cooperate with a guy that is armed and has a badge. Don't yell, argue or run.

A few years back I was taking my wife to a hospital for an MRI, a dizzy broad rear ended us and then when I tried to get her plate number she put the car in reverse and tried to run me down. I called 911 and explained what had happened and that we had an appointment that we had to get to, I was advised to stop by the police station on my way home to report the accident. When I went to the cop shop a Barney Fife type was pissed that he had to take the report and demanded to know why we were going to "that" hospital. That was none of his fucking business, it had nothing to do with the accident and I shouldn't have to explain why I was anywhere in a free country.

The assumption that cops only pick on blacks is wrong. I am sure that had I been wearing a suit and tie rather than jeans and a t shirt that I would have been treated differently. Many cops take out their anger on those who look like they can't defend themselves in a court of law, I see it as more of a class issue.

it would be nice to see white policeman kneeing the back of white guys neck (who might look like his brother or son) cutting off his breathing --I'd like to see that.

I stopped at "law enforcement changed over time."

Police have been an INTEGRAL part of white supremacy and violence against PoC for longer than any of us have been alive. We had bee saying this all along but before celp phones it was our word against a white person and theres no need to guess which side usually (read=always) won.

This. Is. Not. New. There are photos that predate colored film of cops beating the shit outta black Americans. Only now theres no plausible deniability w/video evidence so they resort to character smearing and lets just say it doesnt take the American public THAT MUCH convincing to believe a black person deserved to die.

Too bad for you, listening to others helps us, I understand your position because I read all of your post. I am sure that there are pictures of cops beating up all kinds of humans. You have a bias that dictates that it only happens to people of color, this is not the case. It happens in a disproportionate way to blacks, but it is erroneous to think or claim that it is only white cops doing it to only the blacks.

The history of Police have roots in slavery. One simply can look up Slave Patrols and find that out. Police have not changed over time, they stayed the same and gotten worse in terms of modern society. Body cams was a band-aid notion people wanted and got, but did that stop them? Nope. Because Police know they aren’t going held accountable for the shit they do, especially when black people are the victims.

The Police system itself is rooted in systematic racism, it isn’t getting better because it can’t when that is a part of the core of its existence.

But, what has been done to you personally? Can you elaborate on your own personal experiences? Have you been shot or assaulted? Profiled? Tried and acquitted? Unjustly incarcerated? How have your personal civil rights been violated? I could dig up well over 25 cases of people from a demographic similar to my own that have been treated in an unjust fashion, I say "dig up" as people of my demographic don't make the national news when mistreated.

Sadly, this mindset is the reason why police brutality against minorities will always be apart of American society. Bc most white people don’t care what happens, as long as it’s not personally happening to them.

We live in a society that commits violence against a specific group of people without repercussions. It’s unacceptable. It doesn’t matter if it hasn’t happened to me. The fabric of my existence as a black man is the constant awareness that this article, this story, this thread could have easily been about me.

That’s the difference and I don’t expect you to understand that because despite whatever mistreatments or hostilities you yourself have faced, this country still has afforded you protections and privileges over the average person of color. The fact that you can even say you don’t see black or white people-just people speaks to that privilege.

...clip...

Sooo...a [white] person, attempting to NOT be racist by being blind to skin color and see "only people" is by the nature of his action, racist or white privileged?

Your argument then precludes ANY possibility of white rehabilitation without agreeing only with your interpretation of right and wrong???

I recommend you look up a few words: self righteous, egocentric

Way to go! Started off slow but now you’re getting it...|

No....thankfully I'm NOT getting "it"
What you sell is the Snake Oil of race relations.
You drink it. I prefer to promote my efforts in reality.

Please look up the words I suggested and read the definitions aloud while looking in a mirror.

The majority of the police are racist. And when thses murders happen the rest of the racist USA ignoires it. There day will come and they will be removed or jailed !

Your own bias leads you to believe that it only happens to your group. My own existence as a man has taught me that people can be and are mistreated by their fellow man. My group is not white, Asian, black or Hispanic. My group is human. I have had very close friends murdered. I came close myself on more than one occasion. So I can identify with those who are robbed of a friend, mother, father, brother, son or daughter.

Your divisiveness and bitterness seeks to destroy not mend the fabric of humanity. You seek to pit black against white and white against black, and to what end? To heal? No, to destroy! You use race to promote an agenda that can destroy America and usher in a so called utopian society. A classless world where no one is rich, where all only get what they need. Supposedly no one goes with out. I would only ask you how well this has worked in China or the now defunct Soviet Union? I would summit to you that it is indeed you that doesn't care, you see suffering as a good excuse to push you agenda.

What. The. Flying. Fuck. Are. You. Even. Talking. About???

Saying "I don't see color" is completely ignoring race issues and undermining the problems that come from racism. Like it or not, there are problems in America because of racism. "Not seeing color" doesn't do anything to actually address any of these issues. Unless you're directly addressing or combating these issues directly, you're not doing anything by just seeing people as "human."

Pretending your own colorblindness (real OR IMAGINED as self-diagnosing as racist/not is just as silly as someone trying to self-diagnose cancer or bipolar disorder).

Your lack of racism is not a shield for black America which seems to be how you want us to react. OH GLORY CHILE HE AINT RACIST ALL US PROBLEMS SOLVED NOW!"

If you do not MARCH with us, if you do not SPEAK UP for us then it doesnt matter how many Earth Wind and Fire songs you know or how many black neighbors you invite over for dinner. Ignoring the institutions of racism by turning a blind eye to our injustice makes you complicit by inaction the same way a man who knows a woman is being sexually assaulted cannot pat himself on the back just because HE doesn't assault women. The pat on the back is earned when he intervenes on her behalf. This colorblind bullshit is centered on you feeling better about knowing this is going on and doing nothing about it.

I've heard the colorblind speech before and it mostly seems like a way to honor the white equilibrium more than it is a sincere attempt to connect with people of color. Its basically asking for a passing grade for doing the bare minimum.

People justified slavery by demoting people to a sub human species. There is no black America or White America... there is a United States of America, remember that one? Barack is right. These are not race issues, they are human issues. Man's inhumanity to his fellow man. You judge by the color of one's skin, I choose to go with the content of his character.

Where do you get this idea? Because I am not actively ignoring the color of someones skin doesn't mean I'm judging them based on that. You realize you can actually acknowledge the difference we all have with one another and not judge or hold that against them in any way, right?
