One problem in using a spare computer monitor (or even one already hooked up to a computer -- but switching to a different HDMI port on the monitor) is that you need a speaker of some sort. I didn't hook up a dvd player to a spare monitor, but plugged in a streaming stick (like a Roku stick). It worked to get the picture but then I realized I didn't have a way to get the sound. If speakers are built into the monitor, then I think that would work. One trick of getting a non-smart TV might be to use a computer monitor. Obviously, a lot of basic functionality goes away (like the TV tuner), and one would need something to connect to the monitor that has a compatible connector. These days it would be, say, a DVD player with HDMI connection. You wouldn't get a big screen. There may be some gotchas I'm unaware of. But I've done this trick with a DVD player connected to a monitor, and it worked for me.
