So I'm about 6'0 225 lbs and my end goal is 180ish. I've managed to lose 25 lbs over the course of the last year (I was 250 in May of last year), which I guess is a good thing because it's better than gaining and slow weight loss supposedly stays off but I digress. Considering I live with the rents and don't have any money, I don't have any work out equipment and they don't exactly buy healthy food so I eat one meal a day. I've started running and doing push-ups/crunches, and I'm sure that's good and all for my stomach, but my other main focus is my chest. I don't even care if it gets toned I just want to lose my "man boobs". But I don't know how to go about doing that. I don't know anything about the whole carbs and calorie thing so it's kind of hard to know what I'm supposed to be doing...

To tone your chest lots of pushups like 3 sets of 20 twice a day and work your way up to 50 and then 100 per set. To get rid of fat, just keep jogging around the neighborhood for an hour or two every day or so. If you can't jog for that long, then do intervals of walking and jogging.

You shouldn't be eating only one meal a day. That slows your metabolism down a lot and then when you finally get some food, your body will turn most of it into fat rather than glycogen. Try taking two or three bites of food at breakfast and lunch with lots of water. What kinds of food do your parents buy? If you tell them you're trying to lose weight will they try to support your efforts by buying healthier food? Vegetables like carrots and celery are very cheap. It would be a lot better if you snacked on those all day than nothing at all.

Thanks a lot for your input. I really appreciate it. We're not too good on money right now, plus we've got a ton of kids because it's a big family, so they just buy a lot of cheap junk food. It's pretty much all junk food. Which is why I figured it'd be better to only eat one meal a day. But the whole metabolism thing I didn't know. I've heard that before but never knew why people said that, but it definitely makes sense so I'll remember that. I've already gotten used to drinking tons of water over the last year. I think that definitely played a huge part with my current weight loss. I think they would help me I just don't like to ask because I feel guilty when they spend their money on me when I should have a job and be making my own money, so I'm jobhunting right now and soon I'll be able to save up for some equipment and some of my own food.

Hey Cure...

First mate...congrats on your progress...

But... and its a big one... please be careful with your eating habits. versatastic is right... eating one meal a day is not a good idea.

I understand that its hard while you live with your parents but you have to try and get some sort of balance in your eating... not only to lose weight but to be healthy.

Whats happening right now is that your body thinks that its being starved and in "famine" mode... so literally everything you put in your mouth it stores as fat simply because it thinks it might not ever get food again because its so long between meals. Its a device to help keep you alive buts its robbing you of your goals... and over time your health.

The reason that bodybuilders and the like eat 6 small meals a day is simply to convince the body that it will be fed and looked after so regularly that it can just burn up whatever it gets with out the need to store... in other words it helps to raise your metabolism.

But thats almost impossible for anyone to manage especially someone in your position.

So try to get your hands on small snacks during the day... Fibre like fruit and vegies is good and help you feel full so hit them if you can, but in addition you actually need something with "guts" in it... carbs and proteins to stop your body storing whatever you give it.

A quick fix is milk. Its not perfect by any means... and some people can be a little intolerant to it... but if you cant find anything else drink a glass or two of milk in the mid morning and mid afternoon. Its got protein, carbs and good fats. Make sure you drink full cream as the fats in it actually help promote weight loss and those are removed in skim or trim or diet milk....

Breakfast cereals are cheap... try to eat your equivalent to something like weetbix

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weet-Bix

that will help fill you up...

As for your chest mate... push ups are awesome... try the variations on the theme though...

Feet elevated push ups for upper chest
Chest elevated (use 2 chairs) for lower chest
Wide hands space for outer chest
Close hand space for inner chest

Do a few sets of 10 for each for an awesome workout!

Hope some of that helps mate!

6 small meals a day is great for everyone's metabolism and longevity. You could break up your daily food into 6 200-calorie meals. Or have 3 very light regular meals and 3 even lighter snacks in between. The idea is to keep your body hungry by never eating enough to make your stomach full at any given meal. This coincides with a wealth of animal research where starvation actually makes them thrive as long as they're getting enough vitamins and minerals. That's why I always tell people to make sure to take a simple multivitamin if they're going to have an extreme calorie-restrictive diet to try to lose weight.

It's not so much about keeping your body hungry as it is about not having to digest a lot of food, which compliates a lot of your body's other processes. There's no clinical, i.e. human, research on it though because you can't ethically starve people, but the observations have been seen in all animals from nematodes to monkeys. There is, however, a lot of anecdotal evidence as seen in war-torn countries where people don't just drop dead from hunger; as long as they get just a bit of food they mostly survive until more relief comes.

Anyway, back to topic...
Whole milk is delicious! But I wouldn't recommend having too much milk in America unless it's organic. All those hormones and antibiotics they give to cows aren't very good for your body. We don't have weet-bix, but raisin bran, cheerios, or oatmeal are great alternatives and it will keep your bowel movements regular and very smooth as well as reduce your cholestrol.

I appreciate all of the information. I did some yoga this morning after seeing it on TV and had some fun with that, heh. Did some pushups, ate a hardboiled egg for breakfast, and then a carrot for lunch. Luckily we have a lot of colored hardboiled eggs from Easter so they should last me for a while. I find the whole metabolism thing very interesting. I didn't know all of that stuff. I'm probably going to do some more exercise in a bit just because I have nothing else to do. I'm excited about losing some of this weight. I feel like I look fine everywhere else but my stomach and chest. Hopefully in a couple months during the summer I'll be a little more comfortable to go to the beach or something and not mind taking off my shirt. It's exciting just thinking about it.

Hey bud. Glad to see you're doing well and that you're keeping motivated. I was/am in a similar situation to yours. I had a below average chest and tummy but the rest of me looked fine. In our situation what I found best was to build your chest muscles as much as possible as it will bring focus away from the tummy.

The quote from tallguy297 about the chest exercise is great. In our situation it is much more realistic to go for 6-12 reps than 50+ during a set. Heres what I did that brough GREAT/QUICK results.

Do varying types of push ups with reps from 6-15.

Something that is very helpful and usually pretty easy to find is something that will eleve your arms individually. A couple bricks or even sturdy plastic bowls will do. When doing pushups and having these items under your hands, you will have a greater range of motion and the pushups will be more difficult. Difficulty is the key. As long as the pushups feel difficult(not painful) you know you're making gains.

The more variations, the better:
Elevate both arms
Elevate one arm(then switch)
Vary width of arm position(from shoulder width to a foot wider on each side)
Also try elevating your legs as this will help you work different parts of your chest(lower, upper)
I can go on and on about types of pushups. If you want more variations send me a message.

Do a set, count to 30 then do a different kind of pushup and repeat. This is what I did and I noticed my chest develop very quickly. If you feel a bit sore the day after doing this, take a break that day, you want to let the muscle grow. Doing less reps and more difficult types of pushups will promote growth.

Keep this up and keep the cardio up to shrink the belly and you'll be well on your way.

Hope this helps

Hey, thanks. Any info at all is wonderful to me. I'll try out what you said. It's nice to learn new techniques because my knowledge about all of this is still limited. Grats with your loss. I've only been doing mine for a couple weeks now (maybe almost a month? Oh duh, it has been almost a month) and I can tell a slight difference in both spots, but more with my stomach. I know quick results aren't always necessarily a good thing, but I hope your advice will work the same way to me as it did to you. I'll admit I stopped doing the snacking and three meal thing, just because I didn't know how long it would take for my metabolism to reverse itself and I gained about 3-5 lbs pretty quickly. But I've still been eating healthy just not much snacking in between. Maybe I'll work the snacking in later when my body gets used to not eating just one thing a day. How long does it usually take for your metabolism to change?

All of the advice here is good. I just want to comment that junk food is not cheap. Take a look at the cost some time. It's actually rather expensive. Processed food here always amazes me at how expensive it is. I'd say go shopping with the parents and push them toward healthier meals. You can do it at the same price I'd bet.
