The latest politician to come out of the closet is Mr. Greg Davis, the mayor of Southaven, Mississippi -- which is the 3rd most populous city in Mississippi and a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee.

Greg Davis has been the mayor of Southaven since 1997. He is a very conservative, "Family values" kind of guy who is very outspoken about his faith & Christian beliefs. He was married to his "college sweetheart" and has several daughters. He is in the middle of a divorce.

Greg Davis has tried to run for office a couple times for a seat in the US House of Representatives. Campaigning on Christianity, family values, traditional marriage & gun rights, Greg Davis was endorsed and accompanied on the campaign trail by Mike Huckabee.

More recently, the state of Mississippi found that Greg Davis had billed the city as much as $170,000 for personal expenses which included trips to expensive restaurants, and liquor. He has since paid back $98,000 of that amount.

The audit also revealed that Greg Davis spent city money to order personal merchandise from a Canadian gay sex supply store, "Priape".

Today, Greg Davis has admitted that he is a gay man. He says --

"At this point in my life and in my career, while I have tried to maintain separation between my personal and public life, it is obvious that this can no longer remain the case," Davis said Thursday afternoon at his Southaven home. "While I have performed my job as mayor, in my opinion, as a very conservative, progressive individual -- and still continue to be a very conservative individual -- I think that it is important that I discuss the struggles I have had over the last few years when I came to the realization that I am gay."

People are calling for Greg Davis to resign, but he has not indicated that he will do so. He says he is unsure of running for another term as Southaven mayor.

Hey on the bright side..........he does have a Southern drawl........that's hot...

In case his Mayoral website gets scrubbed, I saved copies of his biography, including the section, "Faith and Family" which is a compulsory part of the biography on any "Family values" Republican seeking election.

He's just another closeted piece of shit who has to face the music.

Next, please.

I'm intrigued by him saying that he remains "conservative and progressive," or something like that. I'm sorry, but those two words do not belong in the same sentence in such a context.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too...

But he's not a "progressive" at all. He is politically very conservative.

Then again, if you are a gay conservative in Mississippi, that's got to be more "progressive" compared to the rest of the people in that state. Mississippi has the one of the highest rates for teenage (unplanned) pregnancies in the country. I wouldn't be surprised if almost every high school in the state has a bunch of girls who get pregnant before graduating from high school.

another republicunt. no surprise there

I've said it before, but I clearly haven't said it enough: the gay men here that are older than say 40 deserve so much respect. They've lived their lives in times not as open as today with today far from being ideal. They didn't marry and have kids to cover their tracks; they just dealt with life. These obviously gay politicians that undermine equality and do things to hurt the community are scum.

^ Indeed. Our openly gay elders have fought the good fight for all of us. They were brave while others hid, or worse, turned against their own fellow gays like this one did.

Well, you know, there's a saying, "Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future."

It's still not too late. Maybe Gary Davis can turn things around and become a positive role model for younger gay people.

Yes, he has done a lot of damage, and I'm not excusing him for that, but it's still not too late to change and become a good person.

That's up to him.

Why on earth would that wretched man become a role model for younger gay people? He's already done his damage, and it's too little too late. People like him don't deserve another chance of possibly becoming a role model anymore then Larry Craig or Eddie Long do.

Larry Craig was "outed" because a police officer caught him in an airport men's restroom soliciting sex. Eddie Long was "outed" by the numerous allegations of sexual harassment by the younger men in his congregation.

Neither of those men admit they are gay -- even as of today.

In contrast, Gary Davis admitted he was gay after it was revealed that he made a purchase from a gay store in Canada. He didn't try to deny it, as people like Larry Craig/Eddie Long/Ted Haggard did.

Plus, coming out as gay in a place like Mississippi isn't easy. You could say that people like Gary Davis didn't make it any easier for gay people in the state, but even if there was no Gary Davis, Mississippi would still be a very anti-gay place.

Coming out as gay in Mississippi in 2011 would be like coming out as gay in New York or California in 1971.

Well to stick with the religious analogies, he should first repent of his wicked ways, denounce homophobia and pay for his sins with a pilgrimage to the nearest gay and lesbian community center. Or start one in his own fiefdom.

Coming out in Mississippi would have been easier for Gary Davis than for anyone else. And if he had come out years ago and used his influence to do good rather than to do well, Mississippi would be a less anti-gay place already.

Doctor King was right: the greatest damage does not stem from the words of our enemies but from the silence of our friends.

I love how in that YouTube video he says as Mayor, he's "not afraid to back up and try something new...."

In a case like this, I have no problem with him being outed. Serves him right.

As one of those who led the charge by being openly out in high school in the 70's, in university and in business following graduation, guys like this hypocritical asshat make my blood boil.

They were/are cowards. As has been pointed out, if this head-case hadn't bought into the political entitlement complex and the fracturing notion that power buys immunity from reality...he's still be the same closeted pathetic Republican today that he was before someone bothered to look up the names on the receipts.

There is no redemption for this guy. He can't teach anyone anything. All he has demonstrated is that he thought waht and who was was was shameful and had to be hid, while at the same time reasoning out his sexual expenses like a sociopath and only finally admitting that he loves cock when he was outed in an investigation.

The best thing for him to do is to go away until he's forgotten and make room for someone who comes out because they are proud of who they are to serve as a role model for the kids of this backwater state.

So, Jayqueer. You and the other acolytes over at GoProud and LCR can get together and try to concoct a pretty hagiography for this man, but for most of us...that dog don't hunt.
