Anti-gay Mississippi GOP mayor is gay

I'm more sad than angry when I think of him. My anger is intense that some States get a pass at being homophobic when exactly the same percentage of their high school kids are gay than anywhere else in the country. We ought to be fighting homophobia EVERYWHERE.

Is it any wonder that any time an anti-bullying measure comes up for discussion, it's always the Republicons who are first in line to oppose? It was good way of deflecting attention away from someone's actual gay identity. With all the revelations about gay Republicon politicians being "discovered", the lie seems to be losing its effectiveness.

Miss. Mayor Reveals He is Gay…After Visiting Gay Sex Shop on City’s Dime

A conservative Mississippi mayor has said he is gay after an audit showed he had the city pay for a wide range of personal expenses, including a visit to a gay sex store in Canada.

He's another thief trying to get out of trouble by claiming he's gay. We had a governor who did the same thing in NJ. He was still a thief, just like this guy is.

Sometimes it's helpful, for stories like this, to get a report from the local newspaper.

The Desoto Times Tribune has an article in the paper --

http://www.desototimes.com/articles/2011/12/17/news/doc4eebd67f068dd289181249.txt

Here is an excerpt --

Wiseman, who has been analyzing and covering Mississippi politics for the past 30 years, said although Mississippi has changed dramatically in the past three decades, it remains to be seen whether a city like Southaven, one of the state's most conservative cities, will support an openly gay mayor.

"Things have changed dramatically since the Jon Hinson days but it's become a debatable issue now," Wiseman said of former U.S. Rep. Jon Hinson, a gay man, who was arrested and charged with a lewd act in a Washington restroom in the early 1980s.

The state's views on homosexuality were further challenged when former Mississippi Governor Bill Allain became embroiled in allegations he had consorted with gay prostitutes in the capital city.

"There have been a couple of polls out in which Mississippi is viewed as one of the most conservative and most religious of all states," Wiseman said. "DeSoto County is ground zero in religion and politics. In DeSoto County, there is a church on every corner. That makes for pointing the finger and saying you're a bigger sinner than I am."

During the race against Travis Childers for the U.S. House and the bruising Republican Party contest against fellow Republican Glen McCullough, Davis attempted to position himself as the most conservative "pro family candidate."

"If he had gotten elected and it was found that a lot of that ( questionable expenditures) took place you would have had the state trying to deal with a sitting Congressman. It's hard to say what the reality would have been beyond DeSoto County. Either way, it doesn't bode well for one's political future."

There is no redemption for this guy. He can't teach anyone anything. All he has demonstrated is that he thought waht and who was was was shameful and had to be hid, while at the same time reasoning out his sexual expenses like a sociopath and only finally admitting that he loves cock when he was outed in an investigation.

The best thing for him to do is to go away until he's forgotten and make room for someone who comes out because they are proud of who they are to serve as a role model for the kids of this backwater state.

So, Jayqueer. You and the other acolytes over at GoProud and LCR can get together and try to concoct a pretty hagiography for this man, but for most of us...that dog don't hunt.

I'm not excusing him at all. But if he wants to, it still not too late to make amends.

Before you kick him to the curb, you should remember that Mr. Gary Davis comes from Mississippi which is probably the most anti-gay state in the U.S. (along with Alabama). There is a Southern Baptist church on every street corner. Imagine how alone he must have felt when he was trying to come to terms with his sexuality. Imagine how alone he must feel now -- given that that most Republicans in the Bible Belt will forgive theft or even heterosexual adultery, but they will not forgive homosexuality.

If he made that purchase at the gay sexual merchandise store and somehow (accidentally?) tried to bill the city for it, I'm pretty sure he has likely made other purchases at gay-oriented businesses or websites.

He even has probably browsed the "Just Us Boys" website...........maybe he will even read this thread!

Yes, what he did was horrible (both the anti-gay stuff and the misuse of city funds for his personal expenses). But we should still be compassionate to what he is going through in coming out.

That's more than an excerpt -- it's 40% of the entire article.

Well often, a lot of these local newspapers will delete their articles after a few weeks (mine does), so I wanted to include the most relevant section from the article in case the newspaper takes the article down from their website.

That is their prerogative. In conjunction with copyright law, it is also a good reason to summarize the points of interest in the article, in your own words, and then link to the source for validation. ;)

And fair use allows only excerpts, which I suppose could mean anything short of half the article, but is not ordinarily treated that way. Nor do I think the application to internet discussion boards has been settled.

After all the damage he has done, I don't think he has the luxury. And I'm sure there are several posters on this website from the deep south that are openly gay and haven't done damaging things like Gary Davis has to the LGBT community.

Accidentally? How did he accidentally bill the city for it? He's just dumb that's all.

Habit, probably -- he was billing so much crap to the city, he just did it without thinking. Or perhaps he was silly enough to have nothing but the city's charge number with him. Or maybe he imagined that by billing it to the city there would be anonymity.

Okay, he's just dumb.

Posting content in Internet forums constitutes an act of publication – or re-publication, if you’re quoting from an external source.

The 1961 Report of the Register of Copyrights on the General Revision of the U.S. Copyright Law cites examples of activities that courts have regarded as fair use: “quotation of excerpts in a review or criticism for purposes of illustration or comment; quotation of short passages in a scholarly or technical work, for illustration or clarification of the author’s observations; use in a parody of some of the content of the work parodied; summary of an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report; reproduction by a library of a portion of a work to replace part of a damaged copy; reproduction by a teacher or student of a small part of a work to illustrate a lesson; reproduction of a work in legislative or judicial proceedings or reports; incidental and fortuitous reproduction, in a newsreel or broadcast, of a work located in the scene of an event being reported.” [US Copyright Office]

CE&P Posting Guidelines:
QUOTING FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES

You should always include your own personal criticism, illustration, clarification, parody, or summary of the work you are quoting.

Right. And being as this is a political discussion forum, the use probably falls under "commentary"... so long as there are comments.

There's another use I'm not sure is covered by that list, namely using an author's own words to clarify the author's position when that has been misrepresented; in that case, more extensive quoting is permissible -- though on the other hand, a court could easily question the breadth of the audience in question and weigh that against the value to the author of having his words less freely quoted.

I apologize for posting the entire article above. Another message board that I post on regularly allows full articles, so I sort of "forgot myself" and did the same here. I'll be more careful in the future.

In regards to Greg Davis & other men in his position -- I sometimes wonder if they want to be caught. Certainly there are far more discreet ways for someone to conduct their sex life, regardless of orientation. One doesn't need to hire escorts or try to hook up in public restrooms or purchase sex toys on the company dime.

I respectfully suggest that you, or anybody else who wishes to go about the process of creating new case law relating to the rules of copyright, should perhaps consider creating their own website to test such a hypothesis.

No doubt, full verbatim quotes are the most egregious and they are almost never warranted. The key to "fair use" is the inclusion of meaningful personal commentary. But even with an abundance of commentary, excessive republication is not permissible. I have seen some of the cease and desist orders delivered to JUB. I can also report that in the past I have been personally engaged as the principle agent of contact associated with a business enterprise with an express interest in protecting its intellectual property rights. In that capacity, I have initiated a few cease and desist orders of my own – some of which were directed toward rather well known entities. Have no doubt, intellectual property rights are quite real and the consequences relating to a disregard of those rights can be menacing, to say the least.

Please rest assured that I will continue to truncate or remove whatever content I may encounter here on JUB that appears to represent an excessive quote from external sources. And that is because I desire to protect this forum from any pattern of consequence that may impede or otherwise threaten its future success or survival. If you wish to further challenge that restriction, please create a thread in the Ask the Moderators forum.

Maybe he was after an instruction manual. :p

I'm just sharing what I know. And I was hoping some here would take note that having commentary isn't a JUB requirement, it's the law. If other sites allow it, they could be in serious trouble fast.

That fact that he's gay is absolutely irrelevant to me. He is a thief plain and simple. He spent the city's money that should be going to the city and it's people on his own personal expenses. He should be held accountable for that. Doesn't matter what it was spent on.
