Another great selection of replies. Thanks so much...seriously its appreciated. To the person that compared it to DADT, wow, I think you hit it on the mark. And actually quite a few of my friends are straight, between like 25-35 and single...its weird nowadays---So I wouldnt say everyone knows I (or them) are gay because its actually quite common, at least here! I would have no problem if I got asked to do an AIDS fundraiser. I think that is beneficial to the community to have someone seen in the market out there standing up for a cause.

You should just come out when you're comfortable. If doing an AIDS fundraiser would help you become more comfortable with the idea of being out to the world, then do it. Our community needs as many supporters as we can get; the more the better.

Just wondering myself what the employment law situation is in the U.S. In Britain if you feel sufficiently pressured either by management OR your colleagues to leave your job because of their attitude towards your sexuality you are perfectly entitled to sue them for Constructive Dismissal. Most company's are too petrified of all the bad publicity that would come with an employment tribunal not to take action against anyone causing trouble once the management are aware.

Obviously this may not necessarily help you if the culture of the company is anti-gay and there are more ways to discriminate against you than just name calling but I just wondered what your legal protection is like in the US.

Some time ago the U.K did have a version of don't ask don't tell in its armed forces on an informal level, but today, it would be illegal, you might say 'unconstitutional' for the government to enact a DADT policy. I get the feeling the UK is way ahead of the US in terms of governmental protection for LGBT people. There is a new Equality Act thats just been passed into Law that means that if a customer is harassed because of their sexuality by an employee of a company, the company can be sued by the customer and fined by the government. The one thing that can be said for the Labour Government of Britain was whilst they may have bankrupted the country, got us into several wars we didn't want to fight, and placed us under more surveillance than the population of East Germany they did a hell of a lot for Gay rights.

Either way, I think it's a sad day when people are too afraid to be who they want to be in public

^Employment rights are on a state-by-state basis here in the US. Some you can sue for anti-gay dismissal, in others you can't. It sounds like the OP is in a state that doesn't protect jobs from discriminatory firing.
