This got me wondering whether the name pizza was connected with pissaladière niçoise, and sure enough it is. Pis-salat means salted fish, referring to the anchovy fillets.

Nice is Nizza. It was as much an Italian city as any before the unification of the country in the 19th century. It didn't become a part of France until the plebiscite of 1860 and the Treaty of Turin in which it was transferred by Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy to France. (I have read that the plebiscite was rigged.) It was administered by Italy during the Nazi occupation of France during WWII.

Which is not to say that pissaladiere is descended from pizza, but rather that pissaladiere and pizza share the same origin in Greek and Roman flatbread.

Garibaldi, by the way, was born in Nice, and was furious that the area ended up in French control.

I'll tell you the truth, some people even call cakes pizza...
I think pies are more of fruit tarts. We make salty pies for the Easter holidays but they're different than pizza because they are stuffed (not with cabbage) and then covered with the same pastry they're made of.

They say the word pizza derives from the verbs "press", "push" which is how it's being made. They also say it could mean "piece" (of bread).

And "pasta" can also mean pastry. My brother used to live in Venice in the summer, and the signposts of his routes through the city were all pastry shops--pasticcerie. One of the strongest and most pleasant memories of my visits were taking long walks with him through the city and every ten minutes or so he'd ask, "Do you want another pasta?"
