Apparently saying Happy Holidays is not PC these days....SMH

Despite what I just posted, I do say "Happy Holidays" in some situations, usually when I mean to include New Year celebrations and whatever else someone is doing around late December.

That's not really such a great story.

The 'bribery', or 'bought off', angle of it kind of turns my stomach, actually.

That's how/why the Christians first latched on to the old Winter Solstice (Pagan?) traditions.

I've read many times that even if Jesus ever existed, he wasn't born on Dec. 25 – but, bribe people and their kids with presents/cash/days off, and they'll go along/eat it up.

You are right about Dec. 25th being a hijacked pagan holiday, of course no one knows the date of the birth of Jesus.
Furthermore no where in scripture can I find a place where it tells us to have a birthday party for Him every year. It has long been my opinion that this whole season is a money making racket.

Christmas trees have nothing to do with Christ, nor do yule logs and many of the other trappings. I suppose it would be good to do as the Soviets, they invented "Father Frost",

My whole point is that people are quick to bite their tongue about being "non participants" when a check is dangled in front of them, these same folks will spend some of their money getting drunk, scoring some dope and buying some sex. They will also hate those damned Christians and bitch about hearing Merry Christmas.

^^^This is where all the stupid controversy started. A bunch of assholes who are afraid their religious (christian) choke-hold on society is waning (and it is).

I wish people Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays interchangeably......it's a polite seasonal greeting, it's not a judgement on anyone's particular religious faith, or lack there of.

If someone said to me this junk about "Christ in Christmas", I would have told her "Fuck off, I wasn't talking to you".

Or, it could have been that the man wasn't a 'Scrooge'. Just what hat did you pull that 'bribery' and 'bought-off' crap out of?

Honestly, you do enjoy creating controversy and confrontation.

Merry Christmas.

It is called empathy or just good old fashioned politeness. Wishing someone you don't know a Happy Holiday is not necessarily an empty phrase but for many a heart felt means of sharing what one hopes will be a happy occasion for everyone.

pigface Obviously some people give gifts with ulterior motives but that doesn't mean giving gifts to many people is reprehensible; for many people gift giving is a joy.

Agreed with this. :)

The funny thing is that very little of the Christmas holiday is Christian celebration. The tree means nothing, nor does the giving of presents, not even the Christmas dinner. The only part of caroling that can be considered Christian would be a few of the actual songs. A true Christian celebration of the Day of the Messiah's (the Christ's - its a title that means savior, not a name) birth would be to re-devote one's life to the teachings of Jesus, to loving others as God has loved us.

The decorating of the tree and the gifting of presents is all secular, and the greatest component of modern day Christmas celebrations.

I guess I'm happy to live where some people say "Happy Holidays", some people say "Merry Christmas", some people say "have a nice day", and some people say nothing at all...and nobody seems to have any issue with it.

I am pagan...and I could give a fuck what anyone says...none of it is insults me except for the people who insist whatever they think is the "proper" way to do it...they insult me all the time for assuming I don't have a mind of my own...

It's kinda silly from both sides. Personally, I like both expressions, and use them both. Merry Christmas more closer to Christmas, and Happy Holidays after and before Christmas. To be fair, it doesn't really seem like people complained about saying Merry Christmas a decade ago. It is kind of a lame thing to complain about, either way. There should be no aversion to saying Merry Christmas, especially the closer it is to the actual Holiday. And if you are that adversed to either, you need to ask yourself why.
