Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Good Friday morning, Thad and Frankie! (*8*)

Thad, it sounds like you're having a great time living life, going to reunions, concerts, traveling to Chicago next month, etc. Keep on!

Well, I would't say there's really much new to report here. One of the transplanted roses is starting to put out new sprouts, so that one made it, but the other one is still showing no signs of responding. I guess I'll give it another month or two, to see If it makes it.

Hello Johnnie
I hope you have a pleasant weekend My Friend

Good Friday morning Frankie, RM, and Loner! (*8*)

My mango crop is over, but my carambolas/star fruit are now getting ripe. I've been having some for breakfast the past few mornings.

I'm having a little problem with my local Rare Fruit Council. It seems they're not recognizing that I paid my annual dues back in January, because I paid with a handwritten check. They seem to think that because I didn't pay electronically through the website, that I haven't paid. Part of the problem seems to be that they've become disorganized with their accounting procedures because the treasurer hasn't been diligent with the bookkeeping. Anyway, yesterday I wrote a nice little email to the clerk, with photocopies of the payment receipt and the canceled check. I guess I'll find out if he reads his email. I've had a couple of conversations with him, but he doesn't seem to want to check it out. Well, he'd better handle it, because if it's still unresolved by next meeting, I'm going to confront him, and he'd better hope I'm in a good mood, because I might not be very nice about it.

Good Wednesday evening, @Araucaria!

The roof leak has been there longer than I have, the people who were hired to fix it say they can't see it(mainly because they never show up when it is raining) so that's why it isn't fixed yet to my knowledge.

Everything else is going ok.

Hope all is well with you, my friend.

Hello Johnnie thanks for writing to me My Friend

I've had a tranquil week

I hope that that misunderstanding with your payment gets solved

Have a pleasant Thursday later My Friend

There's a simple fix for that. Run a garden hose up to the roof and turn the water on, preferably at a time the restaurant is closed. See where it leaks. Seal the holes. Presto, they're done!

Sounds like a great idea, but I don't know if it will work. I think there's something between the roof and where specifically it leaks, but I don't know.

Good evening, John
I hope you have a good weekend.
I'm sure your payment issue with the Rare Fruits Council is bothering. But I can tell you it's not easy for a small organization to do all the bureaucratic stuff... (I've been both a treasurer and a president). This things happen more othen than we'd like to.

Hi John!

My homeowner loves to garden and there's so much in bloom. I look and admire but really don't participate.

I've been quite busy and am feeling very well. Going out tonight to what may be a wild party in Philadelphia. If it's too wild...or not wild enough...I can always come back home.

You know what a hockey fan I am. There's a "new" NHL team in Utah this year, relocated from Arizona where they had almost no fans. I have bought a ticket for the November 22 game vs. Carolina in Salt Lake City, and used my frequent flier points to book a flight on Southwest.

Good Tuesday morning Eaglex, Thad, Paul, and Frankie! (*8*)

Thad, I'm glad you're having a lot of fun. I hope you enjoyed The Porkroll Party, and it sounds like you enjoyed your Yankees game and stay in Atlantic City. I believe you have a Chicago trip coming up, and you're going out to Salt Lake City in November? You sure know how to keep things exciting in your life.

Frankie, I'm glad you had a tranquil week. You can use it after what's been happening around you.

Well, my little email with attached documentation solved the membership payment problem with the Rare Fruit Council. The clerk emailed me back, saying it has all been taken care of. I'm happy about that, but I have a sneaky suspicion that if I hadn't taken the initiative, it wouldn't have been resolved.

Speaking of fruit trees, I am getting beaucoup carambola/star fruit ripening on my tree. And I pick 6 guavas last night, and there's plenty more, so my guava tree is doing well. I'm enjoying plenty of backyard fruit.

As far as the rose bushes, I have good news and bad news. One of the rose bushes has leafed out, and there are two buds on it, so that one is doing well. However, the other rose bush is still showing no signs of responding. In fact, it looks like the stems are turning brown and dying, so I don't think that one is going to make it. I'll probably go to Home Depot, and replace it with a rose I like.

(*8*) Good afternoon, John

It continues hot, but a little less at around 113F. 100 right now.

I used to have orange, grapefruit. plume, peach and pomegranate trees, but a fugus wiped them out. Now have willow acacias, cactus and palm.

This time of the year I wish I lived in a green, cool area.

Hi Johnnie thanks for writing

Things are challenging from time to time , I don't want to grumble because it won't make things any better , the thing is I'm still standing

I hope you have a fabulous day My Friend

This is the first bloom on one of the transplanted roses-- success on this one! (!)

Gary, I hope you're dealing with the heat OK. I've got half your wish here, since I live in a green, hot area! Too bad you lost all your fruit trees. The Florida Ag Dept. came through and cut down all our backyard citrus trees 20 years ago over a disease called citrus canker. But it turns out that citrus greening, which came a few years later, is the one they really needed to worry about. Citrus greening has wiped out over 90% of the commercial orange and grapefruit crops in Florida, and don't bother planting your own trees, because greening will kill them.

Frankie, I hope you're doing well. Yeah, it doesn't help to dwell on the negative stuff. You're right, the important thing is that you're still here and dealing with life the best you can.

What a lovely flower!

The Porkroll party was fun but I didn't achieve my main goal of making new friends. But I'll settle for dancing amid a bunch of attractive men. I'd go back, but not to the August party...I'll be elsewhere.

I made chili this week and it was satisfying. There's enough left for a chili cheese omelet Saturday morning. Breakfast of champions?

Have a good weekend!

Hello Johnnie , that first bloom from your transplanted roses does look beautiful

When My Grandparents were younger they would transplant roses stems into other stems , I found it fascinating , I never attempted doing it ...

Thanks for your concern My Friend , as I said things get complex from time to time but I'm already accustomed to dealing with them ...

Once again I hope you have a fabulous day My Friend

(*8*) Good afternoon, John

Still very hot and getting hotter this weekend. I am sleeping a lot, Just try not to go outside. Hope you get bypassed by the storm. Looks like it will pass on the other side of Florida.
