Good Sunday morning, Frankie! (*8*):therethere:

Happy Easter, everyone!

I feel a bit sad. On Friday I found out that a cousin had died. The family I have left keeps getting smaller.

Yesterday I was trying to clear out some excess growth from an area where my fruit trees are overcrowding each other. I had to get down on the ground to cut away some damn asparagus fern vines so I could cut back some bushes. When I tried to get back up I felt a sharp pain in my hip. Needless to say that put an abrupt end to my gardening activities. I still had prescription strength pain pills from my dental work last year, so I took one of those and I was OK for the rest of the day.

^That isn’t even the beginning of it. Asparagus ferns are covered by these vicious thorns. I think I’ve written on here before about how many times I’ve been poked, cut, scratched, punctured, etc. by those damn things. And yes, I got cut and stabbed on my hands working with them yesterday. I HATE those damn things!

IMG_0454.jpegGood Friday night/Saturday morning, Paul, and thanks! (*8*):therethere:

After I posted the rubber ducky from the Pride Parade, I found another rubber ducky that I got at last year’s Pride. Only this one is blue.

Good Tuesday morning, Frankie! (*8*):therethere:

I hope you’re feeling better.

Friday night my next door neighbor knocked on my door and invited me over. It seems he was celebrating his compleano (birthday). There was a bunch of prime Cuban beef, hombres calientes, men in their late 20s and 30s, sitting at a couple of tables playing dominoes. They were yelling and being noisy, with a bunch of macho swagger. Bunch of posers! A couple of them had their women on the side, but they were mostly into the male bonding stuff.

As for the host, he and his brother plied me with lots of food, sirloin steak tips and some heavy soup that had large chunks of ham in it. And mucho cerveza as well. I got really stuffed and had to come back home.

The party lasted all night, with the guys slapping down dominoes and yelling. In the morning a couple of cars were still left out front. I guess a couple of the men crashed overnight. Or maybe there was some down low stuff going on? Hmm…

Yesterday I went back to clearing out some of the undergrowth crowding around my fruit trees. I had to cut back a Surinam cherry bush, Eugenia uniflora,

I’ll continue to post what I was trying to say. I’m typing this on my iPhone, which started screwing up, so I figured I’d better hit “post” or I’d probably lose what I already typed trying to clear out the screwups.

OK, as I was saying, yesterday I went out and tried to clear out some undergrowth crowding around my fruit trees. I had to cut back a Surinam cherry bush, Eugenia uniflora, which I had allowed to grow up. They’re actually rather agreeable, having glossy leaves and a fruit that tastes like sweet stewed tomatoes. They’re commonly planted as a hedge in South Florida. But it seems to be a garden plant that did too well, as the birds scatter their seeds all over the place.

And yes, it was covered with those damn asparagus fern vines. I wore gloves this time, they provided some protection, but I got cut and scratched on my arms. And while I cut back the Surinam cherry I tried hard not to bend down too much so I wouldn’t trigger the pain in my hip again.

Anyway, I did all that, and yes, I took the shears and cut a whole bunch of asparagus fern stalks that were growing all over yet another Surinam cherry bush I have to cut back. But I was tuckered out by then, so I left the cut vines on the bush and figured I would cut it back another day. And one other thing. I found out by cutting that the Surinam cherry has some hard wood, so I don’t need to let them grow up if I don’t want hard work for myself.

Hello Johnnie it looks like youve had intense days , the good thing is that you ate tasty stuff
I would tell you about my days too but it would take time and I have to rush to do other tasks

I hope life treats us better soon

Good Saturday morning, Frankie! (*8*)

I hope things get better for you.

I've been having server problems of JUB for the last couple of days, sometimes even being unable to navigate the site. Last night it took forever to display, and when it did it was so jumbled as to be completely unusable. So I abandoned it and hoped it would be better this morning. Let's hope it goes well.

Well, I finally got to the second Surinam cherry bush on Wednesday, and cut it back. And something told me to wear protective eye goggles to protect me from those damn asparagus ferns. And they scratched my arms up something fierce. I had a 3 inch gash with a 1/2 inch hook on one arm. And I cleared out the asparagus fern vines, which inter-tangled with jasmine vines and Virginia creeper vines. I think the problem was not just the Surinam cherry bushes, but they provided a trellis for the asparagus fern vines, etc. to grow over the top of everything.

I did all this to help clear out all the vegetation crowding out my Barbados cherry, Malpighia glabra, which I had planted and really do want. It is still there, but a bit misshapen because of all the crowding. I gave it a bit of a reprieve, but ultimately the overcrowding issue is still there. It is near my carambola/starfruit, which I do want, but has grown large beyond all expectations. And there is a mango on the other side of it. And my sugar apple in the same area is starting to be getting encroached upon. And if all that isn't enough, my next door neighbors planted a mango tree near the fence which will soon grow up into the crowding. They probably should have planted it further back, but I suspect they wanted that area for parties. And I will freely avail myself of any mangos from that tree that fall on my side of the property line if they turn out to be any good at all.

Hi Johnnie , thanks for writing
I hope your Barbados Cherry keeps on growing , it's better to have a misshapen plant than a dying one
I had planted " Dwarf Fucshias " in 2001 and they had grown well for several years , guests ( relatives came ,last easter ) and apparently they pulled the plant out of its original rooting and tried to " straighten it up " by replanting it in the same area fut facing another direction as it had a misshapen appereance , now it's dying and I'm really pissed off I had to protect it with bricks around it because its collapsing onto the ground
I really hate it when people who know nothing about gardening intrude and fuck things up

Your garden sounds like a lot of work
Carry on keeping it as neat as possible ...I wish I had a big Garden

My plant looked like this but with tinier flowers

Hello, Frankie! (*8*)

That is a pretty planting of fuchsias. I'm sorry that your relatives killed yours. They sound like the kind of people that don't bother to talk to you or ask you what you want or need, they just assume. That's why I refuse to hire a lawn maintenance service, because they'll mow down and kill all my good plants. Sure, they'll make the yard "neat" but sterile.

Yeah, my yard is a hell of a lot of work, but I'm also getting rewarded. My amaryllis is displaying spectacular blooms right now, and even my neighbor noticed. And my mulberry is full of delicious fruit. I just pick them and eat them right off the tree. I would think they'd be more popular.

And yes, I did more yard work yesterday. I gave some of my established fruit trees a special formula of 0-3-16 fertilizer. That's 0, as in no nitrogen, in that I don't need to stimulate them to grow any more. Besides, everything will get plenty of nitrogen anyway, from the nitrogen fixing that comes from thunderstorms. We'll have plenty of those starting in about a month, and running until October.

I did some mowing yesterday, as the grass has suddenly grown up high due to the recent rains and warmer temperatures. I'm trying to get my blanket flowers started, but the grass is overtaking them in places. I'm also trying to get some Dutchman's pipe vines to grow up, but again, the grass is overtaking them. They're left over from a planting that the elderly lady next door had some years ago. I had to mow, carefully avoiding the areas where things are growing that I want, and I'll just have to cut back the grass with hand clippers in those areas. It's slow, tedious work, but I'd like to save the blanket flowers and Dutchman's pipe.

Here is a picture of my amaryllis:

Hello Johnnie , the JUB system right now is being slow
I'll try to reply later
thanks for writing my friend

Johnnie , I'm sorry for not replying thoroughly but I have a lot going on
I hope you keep on doing your gardening work .
I wish I had a sort of big garden where I can plant roses , fucshias , maybe a peach tree , cacti and other plants I like
I ve been to a big garden only once in my life and it felt like a paradise home

It must be lots of hard work but keep on doing what you love as long as youre energetic to keep on doing it
Maintenance mowers or people who lack talent for gardening chop and notch on plants as if they were decapitating the plants , i think to trim plants you have to choose the proper date , and also one must have a sense of aesthetics and carefulness , but many people lack those traits and butcher plants
My garden is almost all gone now ..theres only two rose plants, a chopped bruggansia that will pull through for sure and my dead fucsia

Good Thursday evening, Frankie and Loner! (*8*)

Just when I was thinking I got through the winter season unscathed, I caught a nasty cold and have been dealing with it this week. Usually what I like to do when I get sick is get lots of bed rest and take it easy until I get better. But this time I have a bad cough, and in fact lying down seems to trigger the coughing. This morning I felt a little better but not good enough to resume my normal activities. Today was the distribution day for the MCC Food Pantry, but I decided to stay home. I should be fine in a couple of days. I might resume some gardening work this weekend if I feel better by then.

Frankie, it's too bad that you don't have a garden space of your own, and have to put up with relatives' bad gardening decisions. From what I understand, Peru has many different climates, from tropical rain forest to alpine to desert and everything in between. In fact, it sounds like if you can grow something anywhere in the world, you can probably grow it somewhere in Peru.

Hehe! Actually, I believe Aquarians aren't supposed to get along with water signs. As far as experience, my ex is a Virgo (earth sign), and we were together 14 years. We generally saw most things pretty much the same way, so we usually got along. The thing was, he wanted us to do everything as a couple, and I felt my needs getting crowded out. When would I get a chance to be an individual?
