Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Good Sunday morning, RM, Gary, Paul, Frankie, and Dan! (*8*)

Wow, it's great that you're all stopping by!

I know that many of you are suffering from extreme heat right now, and it's no exception here. It's been sort of a steady simmer here, with the heat and humidity. We're having a lot of rain and storms, and they usually cool us off, but this year it's getting very unpleasant every day before the rains fall.

BTW, have you seen the reports that the water temps surrounding Florida are the hottest they've ever been? The temps on the beach here are in the high 80s, very warm, but that's somewhat typical here in mid to late summer. But in other areas, especially in Florida Bay between the tip of the state and the Keys, they have been recording exceptionally high, and they're worried that it might kill off the coral reefs.

Hello Johnnie , the weather situation in your area sounds extreme this year . Hopefully it rains more often to cool off the intense heat .

Thanks for writing to me buddy

I hope you have a better and pleasant new week

:band: (UU)

(*8*) Good afternoon, John.

Only 112F at noon. But it is a dry heat.

Hi Johnnie , I hope you have a pleasant Thursday later

(*8*) Good evening, John

Staying cool in some good A/C I hope. Today broke the weeks long string highs of 120F when we hit 121.

Good Wednesday evening Gary, Frankie, Paul, Andrew, and Matthew! (*8*)

They're still issuing heat advisories, but it has been a bit less unpleasant the last couple of days, I think in part due to storms and clouds. I had quite a storm Tuesday afternoon, with torrential rains, high winds, and lots of lightning. I lost power for about a minute.

I mowed my backyard with my new mower this evening. I hadn't been able to get out there for a long time due to all the rain, and the grass was very high. I waited until after 7, when it started getting a bit cooler.

Gary, you are just having hellacious heat this year! And now you've got scorpions?

The dentist is back from his trip. I'm just waiting for the word to go visit him and "play."

Happy birthday, Frankie!

^Actually, my mango trees are done with bearing for the year, so nothing hit the house. But now my carambolas are starting to ripen. There has been one beautiful golden starfruit at the top of the tree, glowing in the sun. I'll have to get out my pole hook extension to get that one down.

Good afternoon, John.
Can you explain what is a carambola? I'm very curious. We have this word in Spanish but it has nothing to do with fruits

Carambola, also known as starfruit, is a tropical fruit. It gets its common name from the fact that if you cut across it, you get star shaped sections. It grows well in Florida, and I suspect that you may be able to find some in the fresh produce markets in Spain. It's juicy, and tastes sort of like apple or grape with a touch of lemon juice.

Interesting fact: The Latin name is Averrhoa carambola. It was named for the Averrhoa, the Moorish Spanish scholar.

Hello Johnnie , thanks again for the birthday messages
Carambolas also grow in South American jungle .

I hope you have a cool day and that you get to have fun with the dentist pretty soon

Thank you for the picture John. I hope you enjoy eating them (*8*)
Now for me this is a carambola

Good Sunday morning Frankie, Paul, and Matthew! (*8*)

From what I gather, Carambolas grow well pretty much in all tropical and warm subtropical regions of the world, so it doesn't surprise me at all that you've seen them in South America.

As for the dentist, we haven't been able to get together yet, but we plan to meet up tomorrow afternoon. But he kept texting me yesterday about how horny he is, and what he wants us to do in bed together.

Sounds great as far as it goes, but does he ever talk to or with you about anything else besides sex?
