Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Happy Saturday John! (*8*) Ditto on what Mills and Frankie said. You deserve a guy who wants to be intimate with you in ways other than just sex.

(*8*) Good afternoon, John.

I hope the width of Florida will shield you completely from the rath of Idalia. In the meantime, we are having another heat wave. It's 121F at 2PM.

Good Wednesday morning Gary, RM, Frankie, and Matthew! (*8*)

Well, it looks like another hurricane has missed us, as Idalia went well to the west of us. I'm also glad that it looks like my ex and his husband in the Tampa Bay Area are also going to miss the worst of it. The locals over there say that Tampa is lucky when it comes to hurricanes, and from what I've seen they're right, as it looks like they're going to dodge yet another one. But it looks like Idalia is going to hit an area of north Florida that hasn't seen hurricanes in a long time, so they might not be prepared for it.

Gary, I know you miss Billy and his rooting for the Gators, but I'm also a Gator fan. I suppose they have a game planned on Saturday, but to tell you the truth, I haven't gotten around to check up on it. That is, if they don't cancel the game because of the hurricane.

As for the dentist, I haven't talked to him since last Thursday, aside from a few texts. I'll probably contact him today and see if he wants to get together later in the week.

Yesterday was a useless exercise in calling a couple of big companies, and trying to navigate their useless phone answering systems. I first tried to call Comcast since they keep sending me messages saying I need to order a new TV box. But every time I try to access my account it rejects my password no matter what I do. So I called their phone number, which they hide in small print on page 2 of the bill. "Your call is very important to us..." Bullshit! You have those stupid menus that won't let us talk to a live person so you can just blow us off! Anyway, after 20 minutes of them telling me to restart and other bullshit that had nothing to do with the problem, I finally get a live person. But after talking to them for about 5 minutes, Comcast employed an automatic phone disconnect. So I'm pissed and was unable to solve the problem.

Phone answering system problem #2. I tried to call up Home Depot about getting my door replaced. They said they'd get back to me with a quote in a couple of days, but that was last week. So I had to call up the store. "Your call is very important to us, so please stay on the line." After 10 minutes someone answers, and I tell them that I'm waiting for a quote on the estimate. They forward my call, but no one answers, so guess what? It goes right back to the entry level. I finally got someone who said they'd call me back in 30-45 minutes. But it turns out that my cell phone seems to automatically turns off the ringer and even vibrator no matter what settings I put it on, so it went to voicemail, and the guy telling me that they won't get back to me until Thursday.

Damn, John ...

I think you may need to just go over to Home Depot and stand there in staff people's way until someone will pay attention.

(I suppose you could try that with Comcast as well, if you wanted to come up to Philadelphia. Their HQ is right by 30th Street Station.)

Meanwhile, for a happier subject ... How, and what, is your latest rare fruit harvest?

Good evening, John. I'm sorry about your problems :(
These big companies often treat customers like their servants. The best thing to do is telling them you're going to a different company and see how they change their attitude
Actually that's why I got rid of my old bank and went to a smaller one.

I hope you had a good day despite all of these (*8*)

Hello Johnnie , I am sorry you've had to go through those issues with those companies . It is really frustrating when that happens
I hope you get those issues solved soon
Thank God your area is safe from the hurricanes

I hope you have a better Friday later my friend , take care

(*8*) Good evening, John

The gator.gifgame was disappointing They have lots of improving to do. Glad Billy didn't have to endure the loss. I was hoping the game would cheer me up.

I hate those phone menus. :grrr:

Good Friday morning Gary, Frankie, Paul, Matthew, and Andrew! (*8*)

Well Gary, last night's Gator game sucked. But what was really disappointing was that they kept getting procedural penalties at critical moments, like third and one in the red zone. That is the same thing that really hurt them last year. You would think that the Gator staff would work hard to eliminate problems that hurt them so much in games. It's going to be a tough year if they go into the thick of their SEC schedule like that.

I was getting tired of playing phone tag and such with Home Depot, so I went in the store yesterday when I happened to be in the neighborhood. I finally got a copy of the estimate, which mostly went by a cryptic system they called points. But the guy explained it to me, and he said the total price would come out in the neighborhood of $1600, far more than I had planned for it. I'm thinking of calling a handyman that did some work for me several years ago, and ask if he will do it (the other handyman who replaced my door handle said he couldn't do doors anymore. He's getting older and that heavy lifting would be too much for him). I'm sure I've still got his number somewhere, but no doubt it's buried under years of papers and such somewhere. I'll probably have to ask the woman who referred him to me some years ago, but I'll have to wait until she gets back from vacation for my Writers' Group Zoom meeting, and that won't happen for a couple of weeks.

As for Comcast, it seems my television is working OK right now, but my bill is way too high. And of course they combine everything on your bill, so you can't itemize and say I want this, but I don't need that, and so on. The thing is, my internet is on it, so I want to keep that, but I don't watch all that much television. And what I hate is that where I live, it's either them or AT&T. It's sort of a choice like asking whether I'd rather die from arsenic or cyanide.

I did exchange a few texts with the dentist yesterday, and he said something about his father being in the hospital. I sort of get the feeling he's stringing me along until the next time he needs me for a booty call, but it's not that urgent for him right now. That's fine, because right now I'm not feeling a lot of urgency for him either.

Right now my big fruit harvest is my carambola/starfruit tree. It's bearing boku fruits right now, and I'm eating them for breakfast. Actually, a lot of the fruit is ripening and falling to the ground right now, there's so much of it. My Barbados cherry is still bearing some fruit, but everything else seems to have some fruit that's it's difficult to tell when they'll be ripe. My sugar apple already had a good crop, and there's more fruit on the tree, but I'll have to wait for it. Same for my guava. It had seven fruits a couple of weeks ago, and there are still a few more, but ripening is still a couple of months away. Same for my sapodilla. It has several fruit, but you can't tell when they'll ripen, until they do.

For Frankie and Paul, in case they didn't understand, "boku" is tongue-in-cheek American slang for "beaucoup", meaning "a lot (of)."

$1600 for a front door seems excessive. But I don't know what door you have picked out or what prices for anything are in Florida.

The last door we installed was about $350 for the door. Custom order, just your standard metal clad insulated laundry room exterior door with a window that slides up and down but made to swing out. Swing out and not into the bathroom. Yeah, after the 4ft wide walkway deck wrapping around and shading the house was finished we replaced the bathroom window with a door. It's not outdoor shower nice but it's nice. I think Jeff charged maybe $200 and a case of beer for the work. I had all of the trim on hand.

Anyway. I wanted to replace the dead central air about 10 years ago. Simply tired of window units. Home Depot quoted me $8700, plus maybe more for any extras. I wanted the compressor moved. Not under the bedroom window. Oh, we can do that, it's extra cost, but we don't go under houses so we'll solder onto the old lines and lay the new refrigerant lines along the skirting. Not sure if that qualifies as ghetto or white-trash, your choice. Not an option for me. I didn't like his pompous ass attitude anyway.

We shopped on-line, bought a 4 ton Goodman 2 stage 16 SEER heat pump system for all of $3800 delivered. About 10 years ago, prices are up since but not too crazy. I installed it all except for connecting the refrigerant lines because I don't know how to do that. And yeah, I crawled under the house and did it right with plenty of help from a couple of dogs. This was pre-deck. The a/c guy that connected the lines checked it all out and offered me a job. :)

I read back. Jalousie windows, yeah. Drafty as heck. When I was a kid we lived in a house near Mobile that had that in the doors and they didn't work right. I got my happy 10 year old ass to work and hit every moving joint with a small drop of 3-n-One oil. Dad acted amazed. Granmama's house in Mobile, she Scotch Taped clear dry cleaning bags over her's to stop the drafts.

So much text and I can boil it down to "talk to you old handyman, he will know someone" and might save a grand or more.

Hi Johnnie I hope you have a pleasant weekend , wow you've got several tasty fruits available in your garden ... I wish I were your neighbor so I could pick up some of your ripe fruits haha
Take care

(*8*) Good morning, John

The rain is gone for now and the overnight temperature was only 76F. I have the windows opened up this morning. We will be in the 90s for the next few days then back to around 110. There may be rain later today.

Hope my Holy Men will perform better today than the Gators did yesterday. Can't find a broadcast for USC.

Enjoy your fruit harvest. I had fruit trees, but the birds got to the fruit before me. Then a fungus killed them off. :(

Hope you get the door issue sorted soon.

Wow...my Holy Men are off to a great start. The total score for the first two games - 98 to 6

Now if only Florida would get in sync.

Good Sunday morning Gary, Frankie, Matthew, Fredroy, Paul, and Andrew! (*8*)

Gary, it sounds like the rain really does cool you down in the desert in the summer, when you can get it. But having to drive in blowing dust is no fun. It looks like your Holy Men are starting off very well.

Good morning and welcome, Fredroy! I agree with you that the quote from the Home Depot contractor for replacing my front door is way too high. I think I'm going to see if I can find the contact information for the handyman that did some work for me several years ago, and see if he does doors. He had a helper with him last time, so it might be an easier job for two men.

Frankie, I wish I could send some of my fresh fruit to you for your enjoyment. I certainly have too many carambolas/starfruit to eat myself.

Paul and Matthew, it had never occurred to me where the expression "boku" came from. Of, from beaucoup, as in "merci, beaucoup," of course! The different spelling threw me off, making me think it was a corruption of some Polynesian word or something.
