Enjoy the new driveway!

I'm doing very little this week. Watching hockey on TV now and getting a snack. It's all good but I'm not especially proud of it!

Hello Johnnie , thanks for writing

It's great to know you had the driveway paved

I'm doing o.k, I hope you have a pleasant weekend later buddy

Good Sunday morning, Frankie and Thad! (*8*)

Yesterday was a strange day. I went to the previously scheduled Prime Timers, aka Old Farts Club meeting, which is held at a condominium/golf course clubhouse. But the place was mobbed by a huge crowd, which looked like a wedding celebration or something. There was literally no place to park, and that crowd mobbed the entrance, so I don't think I could have gotten into the building anyway. I noticed that several of our guys were driving around looking for parking spaces with no luck on a very hot day. I assume that the management gave our little club no advance warning. But there was nothing else to do, so I drove back home.

Speaking of which, I thought I saw my friend's car behind me as I was leaving, but we couldn't stop and talk in traffic, so I decided to call him when I got home. I hadn't heard from him in a couple of months, so I wanted to call him anyway. We ended up going to Denny's to talk. It seems he had to have an operation for a torn retina, and he talked about the problems with his vision, condo association problems where he lives, etc.

And yesterday was a very hot day. It hit 97 degrees at 5:00 o'clock yesterday, with a 105 heat index, which is usually the hottest it gets all year. We did finally get a few showers in the evening, which helped a little bit, but it's early for this kind of heat, especially prolonged heat, as they're expecting more weather in the mid- 90s next week. Gary, I think we're giving you a run for your money on the misery index right now.

And finally, the Postal Service had their annual food drive, where they put a little card in your mailbox asking for donations. So I bought some items and put two bags of canned and boxed goods for them to pick up. But my mail carrier left them there. Oh well. I'll just take those items and donate them to the MCC food pantry. That might even be better, in that the food will get to the people who need it without it going through the food bank bureaucracy first.

I saw the Weather Channel reports on Florida's heat wave! I hope you aren't melted.

It's cool here today.

I'm taking it easy this week. Making chili this afternoon. No plans until next Sunday. But of course I'm open to almost anything cheap that may come up! Payday is Wednesday.

Good Friday morning, Thad! (*8*)

Our May heat wave continues. The daily high records continue to fall, with temps in the mid and upper 90s, and without a break in sight. They keep forecasting rain and thunderstorms, but it remains stubbornly dry here. The heat has pretty much eliminated any and all outdoor plans that I may have had, and I either stay in the house, or go out to lunches with the Old Farts Club. I'm planning to go to a local Cuban restaurant with them later today.

Hello Johnnie , I hope you had a great time at the Cuban Restaurant

Thanks for writing My Friend , I also hope you have an awesome weekend as well

I like comida Cubana! But it's uncommon around here. New York or Union City, NJ have it.

There's a simple Guatemalan-Mexican restaurant in walking distance here. It's across from our Hibernian/Hispanic coffee shop. Isn't multiculturalism delicious?

And we have lots. Over 60 languages are spoken by kids in this school district!

(*8*) Hi, John.

Highs only in the 90s! I consider that to be cool. :giggle:

Good Tuesday morning Gary, RM, Thad, and Frankie! (*8*)

Gary, I realize that having prolonged weather with highs of 98, 97, 96, 96, 97, 98, etc., is no big deal for you, but it is very unusual here. Believe it or not, the heat index hit 115 on Saturday. Though we're finally getting the rains, with a big thunderstorm and drenching rain yesterday evening. It's supposed to be a little cooler for the next couple of days, with the highs not even making it up to 90. I'm looking forward to that, but I'm afraid the pattern for hot days this summer has already been set.

Thad, I hope you enjoy your trip to Atlantic City, maybe catch some rays, or even take a dip in that chilly water if you dare.

The luncheon at the Cuban restaurant went well. I had shrimp in a white garlic sauce, which actually tasted like scampi, black beans, yellow rice, and plantains, with Cuban bread. I remember somebody, maybe it was you Thad, who posted their dinner at a Cuban restaurant in North Jersey. There were a couple of differences from the Cuban fare we see in Florida. For one thing, they had potatoes in the dishes they served, and I've never seen potatoes served in a Cuban restaurant in Florida. Down here it's all rice and plantains.

^ :ROFLMAO: Actually I like plantains, or cooking bananas if you prefer. Ripe plantains (platanos maduros) are sweet and have a consistency somewhat like cooked apples or peaches. Green plantains (platanos verdes) are sort of like fries or chips, and are frequently salted.

I was a good little hausfrau today. I went to the laundromat this morning, and when I got home, I sewed a button on my pants, the one that fastens at the waist. My parents had a large supply of threads, needles, and buttons that I still have. Nobody does that anymore, but I figure that I saved myself at least $50 on a pair of pants that I don't have to buy.

I can.sew buttons! But I have a quilt I use regularly that is in need of major mending.

Potatoes are more Spanish cuisine, and Newark's Portuguese/Spanish restaurants fix them so well.

I don't like bananas! Platanos are too similar to me.

My stay in Atlantic City was lovely. Tuesday was especially nice for walking the boardwalk. Sunny and cool, a little breeze. I did wander onto the beach but wasn't close to the water. I'll head home after breakfast this morning.

Hope your week is going well! Please tell me you're not spending all day driving up and down that new driveway.

Good Wednesday morning, Thad and Loner! (*8*)

Thad, it sounds like you had a good time in Atlantic City. Which reminds me that it's been a long time since I've been to the beach, though it's only a 5 mile drive for me.

Loner, coffee is nice. I already had mine this morning, a good way to start the day.

Hello Johnnie , thanks for writing

The Cuban Meals you had sound pretty yum
btw I can also sew buttons and "stitch clothing injuries " whenever I feel motivated , I learnt that from my Grandma

I hope that you have a pleasant day later My Friend

Good Sunday morning, Frankie! (*8*)

It's the middle of the Memorial Day weekend here, and I'm trying to do a few things. Yesterday morning I had a choice of taking a bike ride, or doing some gardening. I know I need to do some exercising. So what did I do? I chose doing what I wanted to do over what I had to do, and I hitched my bike to the back of my car and rode out to this woods and wilderness area. They have marshy areas around there, but they were dry, which was strange, because we got a good amount of rain due to El Niño in the cool season. I figure that they artificially drained the marsh to simulate the "dry" conditions that they thought it "should" experience at this time of year.

So I guess that leaves the gardening. It's getting hotter again, so I have to limit my activities to the early morning and evening. My grass needs mowing, especially in the back, but that has to be done in the evening after the grass has had a chance to dry. And I've got these vines growing up the side of my house that I have to remove. I guess all that will have to wait until tomorrow.

Good evening, John. I hope you have a good weekend (*8*)

Are you saying that you'd buy new pants only for a button?? That would never cross my mind. I mend everything I can.

Hi John! Happy Memorial Day.

My homeowner had a party Sunday. I ate way too much. I am finally comfortable and hope there are leftovers Monday.

Hello Johnnie , thanks for writing

I hope you have a fun Monday later My Friend
