Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Good Wednesday morning, Thad, Paul, and Loner! (*8*)

Thad, I hope you're dealing with the heat OK. It has been hot down here, but not as hot as it has been in Central and North Florida. Tampa hit their all-time record at 100 degrees the other day. Yes, Wawa is all around me. In fact, I have three Wawa's within two miles, so I get gas there often.

Paul, it sounds like you're doing everything right for your Yucca plant. It should do well for you.

Good Saturday morning, Frankie and Paul! (*8*)

Paul, have a little faith that your Yucca will respond to you. It's not one of those "temperamental" plants. Just be kind to it, and it will be kind to you.

Thanks, Frankie. Take care of yourself.

I did something for myself by canceling an appointment at the dentist that she made me set up for next week. I finally got the permanent cement on that last crown, but she wanted to set me up for an appointment for another crown right away. I decided that I need a break from all that (and so does my bank account). I've had dental appointments and crowns and waiting for crowns and recovering from dental procedures constantly since March, and the way I figure it, if that tooth really needs to be crowned, it can wait, I'm figuring at least until early next year. She was also talking about messing around with my front teeth, which I don't see anything wrong with them. In the meantime I might schedule that second opinion with the dentist my neighbor works for. Besides, there are other things I need to do that I've had to put on hold while all this dental work has been going on.

(*8*) Good morning, John

My dentist has wanted to do $8500 worth of work in my month, but at 84 years old, I do not see that as a good investment. Just hope that the teeth I have left will last until the end. :dead:

An old friend and his new girlfriend are staying the weekend. It is nice having people around. As I said before, most friends have either died or moved away. He is hopelessly straight  What I would like to do to/with him. He is a rich doctor.

They arrived after midnight and are still sleeping.

Good Wednesday morning, Gary and Loner! (*8*)

Gary, I understand when you say you don't want to do expensive dental work. I'm a bit younger than you, but even I'm aware that I have an expiration date some time in the future, and you have to start assessing how necessary or wise certain dental, medical, home repair and improvement, etc., expenses are. Are they things you need right now, or is it preventive, like all the crowns my dentist wants to put on my teeth? Should I do all this dental work when it's cutting into my life savings? These are some of the assessments I have to make.

On Monday I went to the Post Office a couple of blocks away from my local LGBTQ+ community center, after the coffee clatch. This is in the downtown area of one of the older, established towns along the coast in South Florida (around here, "older" usually means established around the 1920s). This post office was built during the FDR New Deal era. In fact, my kindergarten class made a field trip here. But I hadn't been inside the building since the 1970s. I thought I'd just go in and buy some stamps from the automated machine of the type they have installed at all the other post office branches. But this post office didn't have one, so I had to stand in line to buy my stamps from a live person at the window. I had to wait a few minutes to get served, but for once I didn't mind the extra wait.

Hi John!

I fly to Chicago this afternoon. Northalsted Market Days is this weekend and I enjoy the music and street fair so much. BUT this year will be HOT! The forecast is a high of 92° Friday, 95° Saturday, and 97° Sunday. Whew!
The headliners are Keke Palmer Saturday and David Archuleta Sunday. And there are Chicago-area bands I look forward to seeing from previous trips. Dancing Queen is the Midwest's only ABBA tribute band, and they're really good.

Enjoy your week!

Hello Johnnie
I hope you have a pleasant Thursday
Thanks for writing

Good Wednesday morning Paul, Thad, and Frankie! (*8*)

Thad, I'm glad you had a good time at Northalsted Market Days in Chicago. It must have been a blast to see David Archuleta singing and dancing his cute shirtless self on stage. I see you survived the heat.

Right now my carambola/starfruit tree is producing fruit like gangbusters, and my guava tree is being quite productive. I've also had a couple of fruits from my sugar apple/sweetsop tree. I've been eating plenty of backyard fruits for breakfast.

Other than that, I don't have a lot to report, it's been a rather quiet week. It has been very hot and muggy, too hot to go out and do much gardening.

Hello Johnnie , great to know you're able to enjoy the fruits that your trees produce , that must feel tasty and refreshing

Thanks for noticing the shift in my schedule , well the changes I've been going through the past 6 weeks have made me go back to old schedules and habits

I prefer to be a Night Owl ... For the first half of 2025 I had become into a sort of early bird ( going to bed at 7pm and getting up at 2 am , I hated that schedule)

Now I feel more comfortable in spite of the diverse psychological and physical issues/blows that " have tried" to break me ...

I hope you have a pleasant evening and a fun Thursday later

Good evening, John (*8*)
I'm glad you're enjoying the seasonal fruits. I wish I had some fruit trees myself. Right now its the best season for fruits in the Mediterranean!

I'm hoping my pal will give me some of her garden produce. The garden here is filled with lovely flowers, but other than the nasturtiums there's nothing to eat.
It's dark now but maybe tomorrow I'll share a photo.

(*8*) Hi, John

Has the hurricane mostly passed you by? We remain hot and will be getting very hot. At 11AM it's 100F

Good Thursday morning Gary, Thad, and Paul! (*8*)

Gary, I hope you're coping with the heat where you are OK. There were no worries with hurricane Erin, it was far enough out to sea that it didn't bother us. But one thing it did do was to change the wind direction to the west, which here is a land breeze, and made the temperatures go up. It was 96 degrees yesterday, no big deal for you, but we still have the humidity.

Paul, I'm sure you're enjoying the fresh fruits. What is ripe over there now, peaches, nectarines, apricots, pears? I expect that the grape crop is coming in right now. They don't grow here, but at this time of year I look forward to seeing the Concord grape crop in the stores, which grow in the Northern states.

Thad, it would be lovely to see those garden pics.

Like I said, it has been hot here. All summer I've been trying to eat foods that don't need a lot of heating to help keep the house cool. I've been having cold sandwiches, or Boca Burgers, which only require a couple of minutes in the microwave, or hot dogs, which require boiling, but it's only like about 5 minutes. For breakfast I'm eating a lot of cold cereal, which I normally don't like to do much. And I'm having to water outdoors a lot. Along with the heat, it has been unusually dry this summer, with the typical rainy season a lot weaker than usual. There are even some fires burning in the Everglades, which is rare at this time of the year, because usually the rains and storms quench them by June. I haven't smelled it yet, but the weather people are even saying we could get some smoke from the fires, depending on wind direction.
