Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Hello Johnnie , I've got power back on , there have been strong winds here which only affected my home electricity connection , fortunately we have power back on , it was aggravating to be powerless for 20 hours , I had to keep on insisting with phone calls for them to send us staff to fix our issue .

I Hope that the Everglades smoke doesn't reach your area

Thanks for writing , have a pleasant Thursday Buddy

(*8*) Good morning, John

The pressure cooker is still with us. This high pressure is keeping the monsoon storms away so far, but we may get some rain today. The days of 120+ are gone for now, only about 110. I got an almost bearable shower at 6AM.

Oh, joy the extreme heat warning has been extended for another day.

Good Sunday morning Frankie, Thad, and Gary! (*8*)

Gary, I hope your extreme heat goes away, and that you have nothing worse than your regular heat at this time of year.

Thad, those garden pics are lovely. I've been putting a lot of effort into my fruit trees, but my flowering plants are the things that are most attractive around here. The amaryllis are the real show stoppers when they bloom, and my rose bush is spectacular. My Jamaican brunsfelsia perfumes the air at night when it blooms, and I have yellow Cuban buttercups, white rain/surprise lilies, and blue plumbago, which bloom throughout the year.

Frankie, I'm glad your power is back on. Nothing makes you realize how dependent on electricity until you lose it for an extended period. We need it for lights, cooling, cooking, refrigeration, electronics, everything.

There has finally been a shift in the weather pattern, and I've been drenched by thunderstorms the last three afternoons. They're predicting more rain all this week. It's still getting hot and humid during the day, but I'm finding that with the cooling that comes from the afternoon rains, I don't mind it as much. Right now all the gardening I"m doing is to cut back the tall grass and weeds in the early morning, until it gets too hot to work. Then I come in drenched with sweat, and take a cold shower to cool off. That is, if I don't feel too tired and lazy to get out and do that work in the first place.

Good evening, John.
I'm glad you're able to work a little bit on your garden every day. I wish I could to the same. I fantasize about living in a small house with a garden :)
Thunderstorms are cool! Unless they catch you outdoors, that is

Hello Johnnie , your garden does sound dreamy , The Rosh Bushes , the other perfumed flowers , the fruit trees

Have a Pleasant New Week My Friend

  Hi, John

After months of no rain, we had a short lived, but intense thunderstorm yesterday. A thunder bolt hit very close to my house. It knocked out the power, internet, cell service and blocked satellite signals. My neighbor said his land line went dead. Power returned before the house got uncomfortable.

Today the sky is filled with angry clouds, but no rain yet.

Good Thursday morning Thad, Gary, Frankie, and Paul! (*8*)

Paul, I hope your organ course is going well. Your trip to the Pyrenees mountains sounds lovely, though I don't often hear much about them.

Gary, I'm glad that your lightning strike didn't knock out your power and communication services for too long. They can do some real damage, and we have lightning in Florida all the time. I suspect your power, phone, cable, internet, etc. services don't invest in lightning protection equipment too much, since you probably don't have that many storms, and you're in a rural area. Which no doubt makes lightning damage more likely when it does strike.

I haven't done much gardening because it has been hot and stormy the last week. My grass and weeds are high, and yesterday I was debating whether I should get out and mow the lawn, when a sudden crack of thunder put an end to that. I have been getting deluged nearly day. But what is weird is that the last two days, the airport hasn't had a drop of rain, and has seemingly missed a couple of big rains in the past week. It is only about 4 miles from me, mind you. I know that whether you get rain here is often a hit and miss proposition. One factor that often makes a difference is how far you are from the coast, but the airport is about the same distance from the beach as my house. Go figure.

Hi John! Today here is perfect ..sunny, high 77°,F.

I have errands to do and I'm looking forward to being out. But I really need a shower first.

Hope your Thursday goes well.

 Good afternoon, John.

I see Sharks will be swimming into the swamp Saturday. From what I read, there should lots of Shark Fin soup. The game is not on a channel I get. Sunday I will get to see my Holy Men at 4:30 on ABC. :)

I have surge protection on all my equipment. So far everything has survived lighting. Which is good as much of the audio and home theater items are very expensive.

It is wise not to mow the lawn in a thunderstorm. Hope you get to cut them down before you can't see over them.

It has been cloudy every day, but no more rain, just high humidity

Glad we do not get much rain as the washes run, and roads get blocked. In a good rain, both roads to me area are blocked by high water.

Try to stay dry.

Good Friday morning, Gary and Thad! (*8*)

Gary, I hope your Holy Men win. Isn't it unusual for a college team to play on Sunday? It seems that college football games are on Saturday, and the pros play on Sunday. The Gators got one of those teams that make you go "who?" It should be an easy game. I'm not sure I'll even be able to get it on TV here. It might go to live stream on one of those ESPN channels, or pay per view, which I won't bother with. Or I might get adventurous, and see if I can find it on AM radio (remember that?). I'm glad all your home entertainment equipment has survived the lightning strikes.

Thad, it sounds like you're having some lovely weather. At this time of year, I consider us lucky if we can get down to 77 as a low late at night or briefly during a thunderstorm. Maybe we'll see some of your weather around November if we're lucky.

It's still hot and muggy as ever. It actually didn't rain yesterday, so I went out and mowed the front lawn early in the evening when it finally cooled down. But the days are getting shorter even if it's not cooling down, so it got dark before I could get to the backyard. But they're predicting 80% chance of rain all weekend, so I guess it can wait. As for the Labor Day weekend, it looks like I'll be indoors the whole time.

Friday would normally be my volunteer day at the local genealogical society library, but it has been closed due to some mold or mildew infestation of their book collection. I wonder if it happened all of a sudden, or it was something accumulating for a long time-- nobody noticed it because most genealogical research is now online, and maybe nobody had touched the books for a long time. They're inside the county library, so they probably have to coordinate with them. I kind of think the larger county library would have the same problem. Anyway, I haven't heard anything from the genealogical society as to when they're going to reopen.

Speaking of volunteering, the local MCC food pantry had an infestation of small bugs in all its rice and pasta packages. It appears the source was the larger community food bank that distributes to all the local food pantries. It was unfortunate, but they had to throw out all of their spaghetti, pasta, and rice. The canned goods were not affected. And MCC had to call out pest control for an emergency extermination.

Hello Johnnie

Have a Pleasant and Cool weekend
Thanks for writing

Well. John, I was disappointed in the Holy Men. They didn't get the usual miracle in the 4th quarter. :(

At least UCLA got crushed bringing some joy. And yes, a Sunday collage game is quite a rarity.
