Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Hello Johnnie thanks for posting
I hope you are enjoying your weekend
Take Care My friend

Fall has fell,
It's no longer hot as Hell,
But still warm and humid was well

(*8*) Good afternoon

Both of my games are on at 9AM (USC and The Holy Men both of them favored to win) so I will be done by lunch. I hope your gator.gifwill use this bye week to sharpen their teeth.

Good Sunday morning Gary, Frankie, and Paul! (*8*)

Well Gary, the good news about the Gators is that they didn't lose yesterday, with the bye week. Yeah, it's been that kind of year. Let's hope they can regroup and get some key players healthy, because I don't see any easy games on their schedule at all. Congrats on your Holy Men winning. I hope you're not having any trouble with the storms and flooding out there.

It has been a fairly typical week. The shelves at the Food Pantry are getting barren. We had to make the distribution bags smaller than usual, and we finally had to throw things in there such as condiments which are not particularly nutritious, like mayonnaise, grape jelly, pancake syrup, ketchup, and mustard. We're doing this to help people out, but sometimes I wonder if someone gets one of those bags, and once they open it, can't find anything in there that they can really use.

There is a tropical depression out there that they expect to become a tropical storm. Nothing I've seen says we're going to get any more than the outer fringes of this thing, which is no big deal. In other words, nothing stronger than the afternoon storms we've been getting all summer. But the media as usual are losing their shit over it and getting people worried. C'mon.

Here is a picture of a Cuban buttercup. These continually volunteer around my back yard, and there's nearly always a couple of them growing at any one time. For some reason the colors look a bit washed out, since the yellow blooms and green leaves are really more intense than this.

^ Aren't they delicate!
I hope your weekend went well. Here's,s a garden photo from today for you. The black-eyed Susans are being joined by something called "Minoan Lace.," It's like Queen Anne's Lace, but prettier...and very invasive!

Hello Johnnie
Thanks for writing buddy
I am doing just o.k I hope things get better for me soon

Have a pleasant New Week My Friend

Good Tuesday morning Dan, Frankie, and Thad!

It's OK, Dan. That last I checked Imelda left my shoes alone. I guess my old dirty pair of sneakers wasn't classy enough for her.

Thad, that Minoan lace is nice, but I know how invasive stuff can be a pain, although they may be pretty. I have some kind of jasmine vine growing all over my yard. I made the mistake of initially letting it grow. It has beautiful star-shaped white flowers with a really nice fragrance, and pretty glossy green leaves. But it has grown all over my plants and shrubbery, and has scaled all my palmettos to the top, up to a height equivalent to a two story house. I'm constantly having to cut it back.

I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your friend Carol, and I'm sure that Buddhist ceremony was meaningful.

Good Sunday morning everyone!

In sports news, the Gators surprised everyone by defeating Texas yesterday, which was the preseason number 1. They played a good, solid game, coming to life just when I was about to write them off. That bye week was just what the doctor ordered. Gary, I see that your Holy Men won as well.

I'm going to take a few items that I bought this week to the MCC food pantry today. They are very low on items, and they announced to the church that donations are needed. I'm not sure, but I think that Social Security and EBT payments may have been delayed due to the government shutdown, so there may be an even greater need this month than usual.

Here is another picture of my yard, this time a non-fruit, non-flowering item. This is a pair of Sabal palmetto trees. It's hard to see them separately because they are right together (my neighbor's house is too close for me to take a good picture of them where you can see the separation). As you can see, the one palmetto towers well above the roof of my one story house.

Hello Johnnie , thanks for writing

Those Trees look so tall
I've been doing same old .

I hope you have a pleasant October Buddy

 Hi, John

I have many Mexican Fan palm] trees which have been home to Great Horned Owls.

1-8-18 2.JPG

That victory by the Gators was unexpected and very welcome.

Yesterday I fell in the yard and had to call a friend to get me back on my feet. Unlike your yard of manicured lawns and soft flower beds, my ground is had as concrete covered with rocks. Only had a few scraps and dings.

Good Friday morning, Frankie and Gary! (*8*)

Gary, be careful out there in your yard! It wouldn't be a good thing for you to be laying out there.

That's a nice picture of that great horned owl. My garden books tell me that the Mexican fan palm is the Mexican Washingtonia (Washingtonia robusta). There is a California Washingtonia (Washingtonia filifera) as well. The Mexican Washingtonia is commonly planted in Florida, but the California variety is not. I visited the Los Angeles Arboretum when I was out in California 12 years ago. Someone had the bright idea of planting a Mexican fan palm and a California fan palm together all over that garden, probably back in the 1930s or so. So you have a bunch of tall paired fan palms all over the place.

The Gators can't rest after their victory last week, because they play Texas A & M tomorrow. Hopefully they can win this one as well.

(*8*) Good afternoon, John

It does not look good for the Gators as the Texas is favored. I get to watch them at 4PM on ESPN.

The Holy Men should have an easy time with NCS at 91% prediction of a win. USC and Michigan are a tossup.

Our nights remain cool at about 65F, the days are still around 100.

Hola Johnnie
Thanks for writing

I hope you have a Pleasant Weekend as well

Take Care Buddy

Good evening, John.
My grandparents had one of these palm trees in their front yard. And also a big orange tree.

Good Friday morning Paul, Frankie, Thad, and Gary! (*8*)

Paul, it's always nice to have a palm tree or two around. And I love orange and other citrus trees. They're loaded with fruit, and the fragrance from the blossoms is heavenly. Up until about 2000 you could plant an orange tree in Florida and practically forget about it, and it would perform beautifully for you. But since citrus greening disease showed up, it has practically wiped out all citrus in the state, all the backyard fruit trees are gone and probably over 95% of the commercial groves are gone.

Thad, that's a nice picture of Madagascar periwinkles and violets? Those periwinkles will volunteer in my yard from time to time, though I don't think I currently have any. Enjoy your time in Las Vegas.

Well Gary, the Gators couldn't get it done last Saturday. They hung in there for a while, but Texas A & M was too much for them. They should be favored against Mississippi State tomorrow, but you can't anything for granted with them this year. I saw that your Holy Men had no problem winning.

Tomorrow is the day of the Rare Fruit Council plant sale. My yard is full of fruit trees, so I probably won't buy anything new. Though I plan to buy a bag of their fruitilizer for the trees I already have. I've thought about looking for a local No Kings Day protest, but something tells me not to wear myself out by putting too many things on my plate.

A couple of days ago I woke up in the early morning to some noises on the side of my house. Thinking it was some animal climbing, I got up and saw my neighbor from across the street pulling some Virginia creeper vines off that had grown up the walls. Those things are a pain, and it's always embarrassing when your neighbors start doing things in your yard that you should be doing. Yes, I had planned to get out there and remove them. So I got out there and cut them down, and then dug up some clumps of tall grass that were overtaking my shrubbery. Actually those vines are much worse on the back of the house, and I'll have to remove them. But they grow back so quickly. I had already done that just a few months ago.

Hi from Las Vegas! There are palm trees here.

Last night's Golden Knights game was fun. They beat the Bruins 6-5. Boston is supposed to be awful this year. The Hockey News predicts them to finish last in their division. I don't think so.

There are multiple No Kings rallies set for Vegas. I'll try to go to the 11AM one at the courthouse downtown. There's one set for the Strip too, at New York New York.

Vegas Pride Festival is from 3PM to 10PM Saturday. Not downtown...at a new Desert Breeze Events Center on the west side. I bought my ticket!

I'm in town through Tuesday.

Hope everything else (except vines) is fine with you!

(*8*) Good afternoon, John

The internet has been mostly off this morning. I hope it stays on long enough to send you a message.

Looks good for a Gator victory. I do not get SEC channel :(

This afternoon it is USC and the Holy Men. My two favorites. Who will cheer for? Probably the one behind.

Weather is excellent. High in the 80s and the low last night was 61.

Not much grows here. No Virginia creeper vines. :) Just grass after infrequent rains.

Nap time

Good Sunday morning, Gary and Thad! (*8*)

Yesterday I went to the Rare Fruit Council plant sale, but I didn't buy any fruit trees because I have no room for them. But I did buy a bag of their special fruitilizer. They had this little pipsqueak kid, all of 10 years old, who insisted on carrying the 50 lb bag all the way to my car. I told him "seriously, my car is parked out 500 feet away, let me drive up." But he persisted, and carried it all the way out there. I tipped him $5 for it, which I guess would buy a soda and a single serving bag of chips from a convenience store. With inflation, maybe.

I did pull the Virginia Creeper vines off the back of my house, so that's done for two more months until they grow back again. Now all I have to do is pull them off the side of the house by my Yucca elephantipes plants. Oh joy! My yard is so big, and I have so many plants and trees, that I had the realization that, whenever I decide to do something, that means something else remain undone. I don't want to hire a lawn maintenance service, because they'll cut down all the young plants I have that I'm trying to nurse to maturity.

Thad, it sounds like you're having a lot of fun out in Vegas, with the hockey game, the No Kings Day protest, and the Pridefest. The Pridefest looks sparsely attended from that one pic you posted, but that may be because it was in a venue with such a huge space. Then again, I suspect a lot of people who would have attended probably went to the No Kings Day protests.

Gary, I hope your internet keeps working. It's frustrating when it goes down, and you have no idea when service will be restored. It sounds like you're having beautiful weather, a bit like what we're having here, with highs in the 80s, but our lows are still in the 70s. It has dried out, with no rain for the past week except for one or two light passing showers. I saw that your Holy Men won, but that means your other team, the Trojans, lost.

The Gators managed to win yesterday in a strange game. It seemed the intangibles were against them, getting penalties at the worst possible times, etc. They won by 2 points in the end, right when it looked like the game had been lost. Mississippi State was well within field goal range with the clock running out, so all they had to do was to kick the field goal for the win. But they put up the ball and a Gator linebacker intercepted to seal it for the Gators. I'm scratching my head, because they didn't have to do that. But as my ex used to say, don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
