Araucaria Appreciation Thread

I had the pleasure of spending Tuesday with John in Palm Beach County!
I'm here to tell you the fruit trees are real. They were between harvests but I did see some fruits on them.
We had delicious Cuban food at a local restaurant.
It all was a treat. I'm glad to get some time out of that busy schedule!

Good Friday morning Thad, Frankie, Paul, and Loner! (*8*)

I spent a great Tuesday afternoon afternoon with Thad. We went to a Cuban restaurant, something he probably doesn't see much of back home. I showed him my fruit trees and gave him a tour of the West Palm Beach area, purposely avoiding the area around that dark castle where he-who-must-not-be-named lurks.

Have a nice flight back to Philadelphia later today, Thad!

Other than that I've had a busy schedule. On Sunday night I saw a concert by The South Florida Gay Men's Chorus at MCC. It was a delightful performance, with nice arrangements and harmonies. They had some of the usual Christmas carols, some Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and seasonal music, but they didn't just sing them the way we've always heard them.

Other than that I was taken to a concert by a couple of snowbird friends, one of whom plays in the band. And last night I went to what turned out to be a small party at a local LGBTQ+ residential home. I think it's important that we support places like this for our senior population, because who wants to spend their final years being forced back into the closet in a homophobic senior living facility?

I asked not to go to that trumpy place.

I'm packing now. Not looking forward to the cold. But it will be OK to be home.

I'm home. Twelve hours ago I was waiting for the bus to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. It was 83°. I arrived at Philadelphia International Airport. It's 37°.

Thad, I'm glad you had a good flight home, though you now have to deal with the cold. Again, I appreciated the chance to meet you in person, and to spend a delightful afternoon with you.

It wasn't windy or bitter cold here today. I went to the library and the market and bought eggs and cheese.
Hope your weekend is going well!

(*8*) :santa: Merry Christmas John

As the coast is washing away, we remain dry for now.

Merry day after Christmas RM, Andrew, Rob, Gary, Frankie, Loner, and Thad! (*8*)

Rob, do they wish each other Happy Boxing Day over in the UK?

Thad, if you bought eggs and cheese at the market, it sounds like you could make a nice omelet out of that.

Gary, it's good to hear that you haven't been washed away.

I had a good Christmas. The people across the street brought over some Christmas gifts, some cookies and candies and such. But when I opened the presents, it turned out they weren't just token gifts. There was a brand new polo shirt with a Miami Dolphins logo on it, some plastic sandals, a sun protection garden hat, and a Chipotle restaurant gift card inside. I certainly wasn't expecting all that.

Later I had Christmas dinner with the pastor and and assistant pastor and a number of other MCC people. It really wasn't a traditional Christmas dinner, but it was good nonetheless. They had chicken cordon bleu, broccoli cheese casserole, mashed potatoes, candied yams, and the ham topped with pineapple was rather bland. There were lots of desserts, though.

Again, I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.

Hello Johnnie , thanks for writing
I hope you have an awesome weekend

Good Sunday morning, John (*8*)
I'm glad you enjoyed your Christmas dinner. And your neighbors were really cool with their presents :)

Happy New Year's Eve, Thad, Frankie, and Paul! (*8*)

Thad, I hope you'll have a good time if you go out to celebrate tonight. It turns out you visited a bit early, because a few days later I had lots of fresh fruits ripen on my backyard trees. I've had a steady diet of guavas, and I also have had carambolas/starfruit. In the top picture are five guavas and five carambolas/starfruit that were on my table this morning.

Here is a cross section of guavas for those of you who have never seen the inside.

Weatherwise it suddenly turned chilly, with the temperature at the airport 46 degrees F 8 degrees C the last time I checked. Quite a shock after temps in the low 80s for over a week. It's supposed to remain cool for the next 2-3 days, with highs only in the 60s and lows in the 40s.
