I think that gays and straights start out with the same general tendencies towards being superficial. Evidence the behavior of teen and college age girls around "cute" boys and young men.
The difference, it seems, is what happens as they grow a little older. Straights seem to grow past the superficial, somewhat, as they cope with the realities of life: marriage, children, inlaws, etc. Many gay men seem permanently trapped in adolescence, or "gay-dolescence."
Women over thirty (or even under) just don't seem to mind a couple of additional inches on a man's waist, provided he has compensatory qualities. In the gay world, putting on a few pounds could be, socially, deadly.
