for example, Athens was named for Athena, who those early Greeks regarded as their patron goddess, or protector.
Judaism is similar, although it is unclear whether the first Jewish theology thought their god was a universal god, or simply a jealous national god who was very strict about his chosen people praying to other gods, like Bal.
over time, new religions emerged, but into a society that was aware of outsiders. two in particular, Islam and Christianity, claim to be the religion of all, but clearly you can see racist or nationalist veins within.
examples- the Italian control over roman catholic church,
or the special relationship of Arabs to Islam, as opposed to Persian or Turkish.
