Are You A Racist.

I just love how everyone is ignoring the other part of my story, the part where I was responding to someone's sentence.

Again, he said there's a couple of Mexican guys over there who do these things for cheap. My response was I know those Mexican guys and don't trust them.

As I've said, had the guy said there's a couple of Asian guys over there who do this for cheap, I would have responded oh yeah I know those guys, I don't trust those asian guys, though. Hint: I'm asian.

You know that ignoring a part of someone's story and quote mine is intellectually dishonest? Or is everyone too politically correct to admit this as well?

The fact of the matter is race had nothing to do with it. But since everyone is so hung up on race, the mere mention of it, no matter how innocent, can be spun into racism.

But whatever...

So you mean you don't trust those Mexicans in particular, not you don't trust Mexicans.

I know what you mean. But people will take it out of context.

People aren't taking it out of context. Stating they are Mexican has no relevance as to why you have a lack of trust for the individual. Otherwise you are implying that Mexicans aren't trust worthy. When being trust worthy has nothing to do with race/ethnicity or anything else for that matter outside of characteristics of the individual themselves.

If you can't comprehend that or refuse to, do not be surprised when people see that as a prejudice or racism towards that group of people. It's your own fault.

... It's your own fault.

And yet, I get the feeling no one would make a headline if she was pedantic about something equally trivial, like the use of an Oxford comma.

Are you trivialising Verinice's quest? Didn't you read her interview in the link (above)? She is a Social Justice Warrior!

Beneath the theoretical privilege claptrap there's a reasonable practical concern. From the comments:

The comment was in reference to a teacher who used PBJ's as a topic for a lesson. As a teacher - I know that a very commonly used writing assessment is writing a process piece describing how to make a PBJ. The assumption going in is that obviously everyone knows how to make a PBJ and can describe it. The problem is that this assumption just isn't true - and assessing kids' writing side by side, when one understands the topic and the other doesn't understand it - gives a very biased result.

I work in a school with about a 95% middle and upper class white population. We also have an increasing population of student refugees from Somalia. I can say, with absolute certainty, that those kids would completely bomb that assessment - not because they cannot write, but because they would have zero concept of making a PB&J.

And since when did the word "Mexican" a bad word?

I swear, political correctness will be the end of us all.

"I stopped playing colleges, and the reason is because they’re way too conservative. Not in their political views — not like they’re voting Republican — but in their social views and their willingness not to offend anybody...just ignoring race to a fault. You can’t say “the black kid over there.” No, it’s “the guy with the red shoes.” You can’t even be offensive on your way to being inoffensive." - Chris Rock

^Let us not blur line between "the black kid over there" being a basic description and "those Mexicans aren't trustworthy" alluding to the fact that Mexicans aren't trustworthy.

Sorry I am not willing to believe that when someone says the latter to another they believe you just mean those specific individuals. Especially considering how would I even know you actually do mean those specific people.

Funny how ridiculous anecdotes make big news in certain circles.

Here's another woman for you to ridicule. Anne, an early years consultant who advises local authorities in Lancashire on equality and diversity, is a Social Justice Warrior.

She says Children should be provided with paper other than white to draw on and paints and crayons should come in "the full range of flesh tones", reflecting the diversity of the human race.

This.

Especially since it had already been established in conversation that the people in question were Mexican. Repeating it like that creates needless ambiguity by placing emphasis on their race for no reason. "I don't trust those <insert racial minority>" is a pretty common line to hear from racist people. It's idiotic to complain about 'political correctness gone mad!' in general, even more so if what you're saying can be so easily misinterpreted.

Communication by default has to involve two or more people, and you can't expect everybody to know your intentions every time you express yourself. Zombie needs to take responsibility for the fact that what he said can so, so easily have two different meanings, and he needs to either learn how to express himself in a way that doesn't make him sound like a massive pat grimshaw in casual conversation, or accept the fact that people are going to interpret his needlessly ambiguous statements in more than one way.

I'm white so obviously I'm a racist.
I'm also part Mexican so I can't be a racist.

...I'm confused.

I don’t feel I am, but after the last election here in Oregon my brother called me racist because I voted no on measure 88 which would have given illegal aliens driving privileges.

^You're also a bisexualist.

VERY confused, I think you'll find! :D

This illustrates how the charge of racism is commonly used to promote other agendas. There are many good reasons why the US needs to limit immigration, which have nothing to do with race.

It's just occurred to me that i may be one, even if it's unintentional.

When i lived in my old house and used to shop at the cornershop i'd just say to my mum, i'm off down the paki's for some food.

Or if i was ordering from the local chinese restaurant, i'd refer to the place as the chinkies.

Is this racist or not, if the intent wasn't there i'm not sure it is.

Do you have any similar stories. ?

When I first came here (F.O.B) I gasped in wonder..why the hell white folks refering kitchen stuff as "China?" That just bizarre/not making sense but it's what it is.
Favim.com-29664.jpg

China collection? I thought you guys collecting Chinese people
But referring China to kitchen tableware it's the same as saying alphabet F to Faggot- it's only meaningful if you put a spin to it ;)

Personally Im not racist and here for equality but it seems people still can not color blind, so go ahead, bring the race card.
I think deep down we're still comfortable to play within our league and also to distinguish differences but I hope the labeling actually can generate something good, like to distinguish one another in positive light.

... doesn't make him sound like a massive pat grimshaw ...

Oh Anders, I can tell you think I'm heading for eternal damnation...but I ask you 'Will you pray for my soul?'.
