why do people love chocolate so much? why do they love Western movies so much? why do they want over-the-top, romantic effusions so much? why? why? WHY?!

Chocolate - a nice rich dark flavourful delight - kind of self-explanatory.
Western movies - not even as unintentional satire.
Over the top romance? No thanks; just an understated mutual acknowledgement.

It's an occasion. I was fine with it when I was single. I'm good with it now. In my mind, celebrating Valentines day is worth doing even if only it prevents me from bitching about it.

I wrote "romantic effusions", not "romance"..:

Effusion is the process in which a gas escapes through a small hole.

Hmmm..
An escape of fluid into a body cavity:middle ear effusions

Nooooo....

Ahh! Here we go!
an act of talking or writing in an unrestrained or heartfelt way: literary effusions

Yes, I didn't take your meaning.

But to me it all boils down to expression. Romance is romantic expression. Effusion...Whatever. Over-the-top is over-the-top.

ef·fu·sion (ĭ-fyo̅o̅′zhən)
n.
1.
a. The act or an instance of effusing.
b. Liquid or other matter poured forth.
2. An unrestrained outpouring of feeling, as in speech or writing: "the devout effusions of sacred eloquence" (Edmund Burke).

You should forget less often that half half [sic] your English is Latin through French

Monsieur je n'oublie jamais; ça fait même partie de ma patrimoine. Mais c'était très amusant de considérer «un pet de saint-valentin.»

Steve and I spent 35 Valentines days together. We never, not once, bought each other a gift or card, candy or any such crap. We always made dinner at home but then again we always made dinner at home every night we were home. We would say happy V day if one of us remembered. It fractures me how many couples spend the year cheating on each other and being mean then buy a box of candy on the 14th of February, mostly out of obligation.

Je m'en refiche de "ton patrimoine"..: écris-moi de quoi tu te vantes, et je te dirai qui tu es
