How? The only person who can slow down Michael Phelps is Michael Phelps. Nobody else can. He never has to compete with interference. Other people can swim faster than Michael, but nobody can slow him down.

But it's an individual sport. You never saw a player run out and knock The Babe over while he was running bases. If they want to beat him they need to practice harder, train more, be better than him. He's just a better athlete than the rest. It's just like Mike Tyson. No one could beat him, but they didn't make him wear an extra 20 lbs of weight hanging on his belt. Phelps doesn't have an unfair advantage. I think he does rank with the best athletes ever.
 
There are strategies in swimming, and I'm sure others swimmers have planned defenses on how to beat Phelps. He's just that much better than them.
 
People who worship team sport players are rather stupid.

As a requirement for their successful Olympics bid, the Brazilians said they would SERVERELY CURTAIL the dumping of all of their sewage, medical waste and industrial waste into the bays surrounding the city. THEY DID NOT! So swimmers, kayakers and sailors have to face the toxic waters of Rio that are full of dangerous chemicals, bacteria and viruses.

Don't even get me started on this first world wannabe country that's barely above third world and their mire of incompetency. The money should have been spent on the slums and infrastructure, not hosting a party they definitely cannot afford.
