Are you happy with your Cable/Satellite DVR player?

My DVR was store-bought, not part of a cable-subscription so I get (nearly) all the free-to-air digital channels. It has a built-in DVD recorder, so if there's something I want to keep forever I can record it to the hard drive in HQ+, edit it, burn it to DVD, then delete it from the hard-drive. To save room, if there's anything I just want to watch without keeping, I record it in LSP which doesn't take up much space but still keeps standard resolution quality. But anything lower than LSP really affects picture quality. Plus if I'm running out of space, I can burn some non-keeping shows to re-writable DVDs. My only trouble is never having enough time to watch all the things I have recorded. I have FOUR MONTHS of Sons and Daughters re-runs still to catch up on! I wish they would just release it completely on DVD like they did with Prisoner!

My complaints are:
*It's only SD (standard definition) so I don't get the HD (high definition) digital channels (ABC News24, One, 7mate)
*Signal broadcast of some channels are poor so I don't get the SBS channels or NBN (9 regional), GEM and GO!

We have ExressVu with HD PVR.

We watch no live TV (except if there is breaking news that we give a rat's ass about) and when we're are travelling can end up with 40 or 50 hours of programs.

We also watch no 'reality' TV or talent contests, so we never care which drug and alcohol addled F list media whore got kicked off the island, out of the bachelor pad, off the dance floor etc., so their is no urgent need to know what happened this week.

We try to save a number of the movies etc. for the summer when re-runs are the staple fare.

I know there is a way to transfer recorded shows to DVD from our PVR so you should check to see if yours can be made to do the same thing.

Not this guy.

Television in general is overrated. The shows that are actually worth it, I pirate anyway. But no way on Earth am I paying out the @$$ for cable when I can't stand a good 95%* of the programming.

*that figure is probably me being too nice

Amen to that!

I have Verizon FIOS and overall I'm happy. I do have one of their newest DVRs that can hold 500 GBs plus I have a separate 1 TB WD Media Drive connected to it. So my days of erasing are a thing of the past. When that gets full I'll just get another. Not to mention the picture quality is near Blu-Ray quality. If only I could figure out a way to transfer those recordings to my PC.

Their internet is blazing fast too! I can upload about 3.2 - 3.5 MBs per second and download about 3.5-4.1 MBs per second. Like NaughtyArousal, I pirate almost everything. Why pay for it when it's available for free?!

I have a Tivo and a DVR. Tivo has a desktop program that lets you transfer recorded programs over to your PC or hard drive so you can make room on your Tivo.

Some of you have made a good pitch for Tivo...It is the Original tapless recorder. I just never thought about buying a unit and paying the monthly service..

How can some channels come in HD and some not even when they are available? The installer said I could only get SD channels but I'm sitting here watching a channel in HD.
