  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Are you highly intelligent?

I'm no genius, but I do think I'm smart, but probablly not smart enough for what you were asking.

Ever heard of MENSA?

(I'm not a member and never will be. Just wondering if you've ever heard of it.)

Nope. Nope nope nope nope nope. Nope.

I was going to take the Mensa test...until I saw the people who were in Mensa.

And I wouldn't say I was a "teenage math genius", but I took part in the first nationwide "math bee" - MathCounts. I placed high enough in the regionals to take part in the state competition. And did good enough there to go to the nationals in Washington DC...where I found out just how NOT smart I was. :) That said, all the "competitors" on our state's team were all cool and well-adjusted. Back then, anyhow.

>>>Well, honestly, do you know of ANY highly intelligent person who ISN'T somewhat wonky in some mannner or other?

I know very few people, period, who aren't somewhat wonky in some manner or other. People just like to latch it onto something. :)

I've heard a theory that true communication is extremely difficult between people separated by more than 30 IQ points. I think there's something to that. Listen to Michio Kaku's radio show sometime. It's almost painful. He's obviously being herded not to get too far out there, and he has trouble communicating casually on the level his handlers want. The result is a perpetually stuttering journey to nowhere. Yesterday he had asked listeners to call in and describe the connection between string theory and membrane theory. Surprisingly, someone did. I think the kid was a physics grad student or something like that. But just as he got around to explaining how the theories are connected, Kaku shut him down as getting too technical. If the answer's too technical, why ask the question?

I have a high IQ. I was also top 3% statewide in Maths and English tests when I was younger. I have mental health issues which are most likely related or are what causes my 'intelligence'. I find it near impossible to meet people/converse with people I don't know, and I suffer from debilitating anxiety. Beyond that it hasn't ever actually helped me. I can't work regularly due to the anxiety so it isn't like I'm earning money from it, and I'm highly unmotivated so studying shits me.

you decide.

wisdom and intelligence are considered two different things, though.

Was a member of Mensa once, with an IQ of 144.

And what impact it had on my life: well, if I didn't study for exams in highschool I'd get a 6 or a 7 (on a 1-10 scale, 1 being the worst, 6 sufficient, 10 the best. Don't know how that translates into the ABC scales of the US, my intelligence is not thát high, you know! ;) ) , and if I díd study I'd get an 8 or a 9.
I quickly found out that a 6 is sufficient to pass, so why study at all?

It's exactly that kind of "laziness" that's responsible for me nów not being able to tap into all the riches that lie beneath the surface. To tap into them means "to study" and I don't know how to do that, I never learned.

i like to think that i am fairly intelligent.

however, when i put on my thinking cap...
