Arm the teachers, am I slow or is that idea completely insane

The pushback is intense.

Not everyone...in fact almost no one....is on board with this.

This is the most important moment in the gun debate since Sandy Hook. If the US rolls over and allows the militarization of its schools and turning them into hardened prisons for learning, America is dead. In that very moment. Because growing up and learning under this model will make them completely comfortable with state military oversight everywhere.

The very thing that all these right wing guns nuts are claiming that they need to have an arsenal for will be the very substance of their lives....a full military state under an authoritarian federal government.

I know I'm not supposed to say this because [STRIKE]this country is still racist as fuck[/STRIKE] it's not politically correct but I'm concerned for black youth who are already subject to state-sanctioned murder from police and overzealous neighborhood watchmen, what happens when a teacher has an incident with a student and "has" to use their gun because "they fear for their life"? I know I know, "Why we always gotta make it about race?" Americans have shown time and again to have a deep subconscious fear of brown people wherein the public wholly and enthusiastically supports "neutralizing the threat."

When I hear this, all I hear is one more person in authority who will have every right under the law (again, supported by public opinion) to shoot Raekwon because he had a bad attitude or he bucked at a teacher. ](*,) And as we saw in Vegas, once the public becomes ok with state-sanctioned murder of brown people it won't be too long until the rest of the population is susceptible to a hail of bullets from an authority figure who won't spent 15 seconds jail.

^ You aren't saying anything that a lot of us haven't already thought.

But like the #MeToo movement, there is a window here for citizens to Resist and to seize back the narrative from the NRA, the bought and paid for politicians and the rabid ammosexuals who currently hold sway. It is a small window and it will rapidly close.

If the next shooting is by some deranged lone wolf ISIS wannabe, or some undocumented illegal from Mexico, the narrative will shift completely away from responsible gun laws and controls to TrumpCo's talking points.

I may pass out from holding my breath seeing what happens and it matters so much to us here, because if America loses this moment, it will be increasingly difficult for her neighbours to control the already horrible effects of the spillover.

We have armed security in colleges/universities, airports, government offices, even churches these days. Should we offer less safety for our children? We don't need to arm teachers or janitors or the lunchroom lady. We already have paid National Guard, Air Force and other service people who work as military police within the country. They could be utilized with no further cost to the schools.

See how easy it is for Americans to accept a completely militarized state?

Even a friend from high school was like "I'll pay for the firearm and training myself for my kids' teachers." Ummmm..... WHAT? What universe of reality am I living in because nothing about that seems remotely plausible or affordable since teachers already have to buy their own pencils and shit. It sounds like the plot to a really bad action movie by a Tarantino wannabe. What am I missing where this makes [STRIKE]zero[/STRIKE] -50 sense to me but others are ready to pay out of pocket to turn our teachers into some sort of militia?

You are missing nothing. Just another deflection by the increasingly abhorrent NRA. Just like their supreme leader Herr Trump, they throw this crap out there as red meat for their adoring legions. Rather than a common sense solution, like banning the killing machine AR15s, they will deflect and try to blame anyone and anything except the weapon. How this weapon ever was made available to the public is beyond me, but it needs to be gone from the stores and out of circulation except to law enforcement and the military.

Oh, I don't know. Gunshots being fired off. People screaming. People falling to the floor. Blood flying everywhere. It's statements like that which are causing the problem. We're not trying to take away your friggin' guns. We're trying to take away assault weapons which belong in a war-torn city and not a public school.

Please convince me why ANYONE needs an assault weapon. Go ahead.

No one needs one. They need to be banned and now.

Their reaction to that is always "Banning doesn't make it go away." Then they list the things that are illegal like weed. "Do people stop smoking weed because it's illegal?!" Ummm, I dunno what episode of The Wire or NYPD Blue or NCIS they're living in but it's not THAT easy to just go to any random street corner like "Yo, where them AR15s at?" with the same ease as one would procure a bag of sweet sticky icky. I can't imagine that if we did ban them that angry teens would still be committing these shootings at the same rate because it's so easy and cheap to get an illegal AR15. If I understand correctly, in countries where these are banned the street price is thousands of dollars for this type of weapon. Here in the states we'd only have to worry about the Kardashian kids being able to afford one. Though I'd argue that they're just as dangerous without a military-grade weapon but I digress.

of course it is completely insane.
Teachers, security guards, body guards, ... etc could be violent and shoot at everyone for no reason.

No one needs one. They need to be banned and now.

Aw come on guy, there's a practical reason for having the ability to rapid-bullets. Like.... for example... and such as..... well... zombie apocalypse! Or what if the mafia's after you, didja think about that? Huh? Didja didja didja? You must want the mafia to be able to just waltz into any American's home and go to town huh? I guess that's what you want.

Now Trump wants to give bonuses to armed teachers. How many stupid things can one man say in one day?

You're joking, yes?

Holy, shit. He's not joking!

President Donald Trump doubled down on his suggestion that arming teachers could help prevent school shootings on Thursday, adding that those trained to use firearms could receive extra pay.

During a White House meeting with law enforcement officials, Trump proposed for the second time in the last two days that some teachers, “certain highly adept people, people who understand weaponry, guns,” should carry firearms on campus. He added Thursday that they may be paid “a little bit of a bonus” to do so.

I posted this in the other thread, but it's also relevant here. It's just a lie to say that giving someone a gun means they are going to go all Rambo at need.

I see Kuli has arrived to croon his sweet song of firearms apologia. Strange that with all those guns about we aren't the safest fucking country on the planet. That's the argument isn't it? That armed people will pull out their peni... er firearms and gun down the terrorist/tyrant/shooter/criminal/black kid coming back from the store/black kid playing loud music/hell just black kid in a blaze of righteous vengeful GLORY!!!! (that's the sound of millions of gun nuts jizzing in their shorts.)

WELLLLLLLL

Turns out there was an armed officer on that campus, he pulled out his gun ad didn't do anything, didn't engage, and now he's fired.

Ooops, so much for the fantasy.

The answer is not 'more guns'. It's a vicious circle, like payday loans. You have guns, and then something happens, so 'more guns' is the answer. So, now you have more guns again and something else happens, so you need more guns. You get more guns and things keep happening.

It's been almost 20 years since Columbine and nothing has changed. The arguments continue and young people keep dying.

I hope these kids open some eyes and say, "We're not gonna take it!" Who knew this song would be so prophetic that it becomes relevant 34 years later?

I really, really don't understand how people aren't seeing this being a part of the problem with arming or putting more guards in place.

I'm curious. Who's going to pay for the training, the licence, the ammunition, and the gun?

Also this, the same individuals for this will complain when it's obvious to everyone else that the taxpayer would most like have to pay for this and they'll complain about their taxes going higher.

I don't even trust a Police Officer with a gun, why am I going to your average Joe Teacher?

That's all over our news here in Canada. The man didn't even enter the school. If the cop was too chicken shit to go in, try to imagine how those kids felt?

Proof positive that the only way to stop these slaughters is to get the guns out of the hands of the shooters.

Perhaps a little less golfing and a little more paying attention to his job is in order.

One of the biggest issues with having armed Guards and Teachers, outside of that specifically, is that the people who push that always come off assuming that just because there is a "good" guy with a gun, things are going to play out in their favor. As if putting a gun there is going to solve all those problems. As we see here, that is far from the case.

Indeed. You never know how a person is going to react in a real situation, no matter how much or how little training he or she has had. And I have visions of a teacher standing behind the desk with gun in hand and aimed at the door ready to shoot the first human who appears there.
