Hmm. His outfit is... extremely questionable. Seems kinda 90's.

I guess I see both sides of this. On one hand, having more queer guests is important, but there weren't a whole lot of out gay celebrities back then (compared to now), and sure, some people may not be comfortable with disclosing their sexual orientation (not preference), but then how does he know that they're gay, and therefore can defend that he has had gay guests on his show?

I don't find it stupid that they were there at all. They were trying to bring up a good point, and he dismissed them as idiots. He says he makes fun of everyone and that it's all a joke; well, not everyone sees everything like him.

Ummm...Maybe thats because The Arsenio Hall Show was on in the 90's??

As for the clip...I thought it was great. Arsenio was dead on! He has the right to have whomever he wants to have on his show. If he didn't want to have gay people, what would be his right. The people who heckled him were wrong. He (Arsenio) made his points very well.

That was indeed a different time. I'm guessing approx. 1990-91. Like someone said, there weren't that many openly gay celebrities out back then, so QN was grasping @ straws. Would've been more interesting to see this happen today, or even in the latter part of the 90s.

According to Wikipedia, this happened in May 1991

That was awesome. The only thing funnier than how he shut them down is how they kept standing up for more. That shit probably turned them on, havin' a nigga scream at them like that.

I am not sure, but I believe it was the early 90’s right after Jay Leno took over the Tonight Show, that Roseanne outed a celebrity friend that most people in Hollywood knew as gay, but was not out to the public. I believe it was the only time while Jay Leno had The Tonight Show to present that they ever edited something out.

If you read history about gays and Hollywood you would find that there were a lot of people who were out, just not to the public. There friends, other celebrities and co-works kept it to themselves. One of my favorite stories is of an actor that I can’t remember his name. He was the biggest actor of his time. He was known the world over and he was the highest paid as well. He was out to everyone. One day a studio boss told him he had to get married to a woman to help hide he was gay from the public. He told his boss if he gave up his wife, he would hive up his husband. Long story short he was fired.

The point of the story is even though this happened in the early 1900’s his friends stuck with him. The studio boss made sure he never worked as a actor again, but his friends stood by him and employed him. Although now most people would have no idea who he was as an actor, a lot of people would know him as an interior designer from the early 1900’s when he was fired to the 80’s when he died. He is famous for designing one of the Reagan’s homes and many other homes of his friends.

Overall point to my post. People in Hollywood protect their friends. At lest when it comes to their sexuality.

BTW: If anyone reads this and knows the mans name send me a PM. I have been trying to remember it for years. It would be appreciated.

^He opened a night club when he was 14?

American Movie Classics (AMC) premiered a documentary on Haines a few years ago "OUT OF THE CLOSET, OFF THE SCREEN: THE LIFE OF WILLIAM HAINES" I had no idea who Haines was until I watched that documentary.

LOL. He got a little too pissed but I see his point. He just didn't need to go off like he did.

PS: The audience is annoying as fuck.

While I was watching the YouTube I wondered why Arsenio displayed such frustration...............

...............he seemed to take it very personal for some reason?...............& then the stab at Johnny Carson? What did the Tonight Show have to do with anything?

...............I've seen comedians deal with hecklers in a more "comedic" way if you will...............

...............oh well over and bit in the past...............Arsenio's actions just kinda' caught my attention...............

...............maybe seen in the context of the time & atmosphere in which the incident happened would provide more insight...............

I vaguely remember this.

At the time I was a Queer Nation member, in Seattle.

All of us saw Arsenio as gay, so I think this made him, somehow, a target.

We were ruthless.

They went off on him, interrupted HIS show, he was justified.

yeah, it didn't seem like he was really that angry about their point, as much as the fact that they got up and interrupted the show.. within the industry that's one of the most disrespectful things you can do - stand up and derail a live show like that.. now i've never heard what kinda gay 'jokes' he usto do, so they might have had a legitimate point about that, but he was right - this wasn't some little dive comedy club where you should expect the occasional drunken hecklers and his show wasn't the 'audience participation' format like oprah or donahue, so if they had a problem with him that wasn't really the way to express it.. i just think 'queer nation' was still learning the politics of politics at that time..

Owned.

Queer Nation ended up looking bad on that one.

Too bad we don't have anyone in the black community standing up like this today...
