Ask a Canuck

I have a question about canadian bacon.

Is it really bacon? Is it really Canadian?

I'm guessing you mean "back bacon." We don't have "Canadian bacon" in Canada.

But yes it is bacon, just made from a different part of the pig. It doesn't have the streaks of fat that you'd get in regular "side bacon. In fact it looks a lot like a small pork roast made of bacon. Typically you slice off as much as you'd like, and fry the slices. Usually it comes packed in a cornmeal crust, and this makes a delicious accompaniment to the meal.

I had no idea what part of the pig it comes from until I visited Australia. Their bacon comes in slices made up of a standard strip of side bacon, attached at one end to a typical slice of back bacon.

So now I know how they go together.

Aboot.

Brent Butt is another funny comedian... and he's from Saskatchewan! :)
Here he is in his popular comedy show Corner Gas. This is just part of the first episode...

I'm REALLY loving Corner Gas. The old guy's cranky character is really funny, and i find Hank really cute in his stupidity. I've watched the first 4 episodes of the first series, and i'm going to watch all the rest in due course.

And then there's Newfoundland. They speak their own English there:

I love Newfoundland! They have their own distinct culture. Americans sometimes make fun of Canada for copying everything American and not having their own distinct culture. I find that an ignorant thing to say though because you have a province like Newfoundland with their very distinct culture. Though it must be said that they didn't join Canada before 1949 or something, so it makes sense I guess. I'd say Newfoundland is the province with the most distinct culture, second only to Quebec.

Also, they hate Harper, so how can you not like them? :)

When it comes to Canadian humor, SCTV made late night television in the late 70's and early 80's worth staying up for.

Britain has Stephen Hawkins. Which Canadian would you say is your most recognisable scientist?

Pssst. Britain has Stephen HawKING.

Our most recognisable scientist isn't really recognisable by appearance, but by accomplishment: Fredrick Banting. Banting, along with his partner, Dr. Charles Best, succeeded in extracting insulin from a pancreas and using it on humans. Banting won the Nobel Prize, but shared the money with Best.

Britain has Stephen Hawkins. Which Canadian would you say is your most recognisable scientist?

These days...probably David Suzuki....who was decades ahead of everyone on the impact of humans on the environment.

^ I was thinking of David, and then I thought of Banting and forgot about Suzuki. But I didn't forget about this. (Suzuki was 64 years old when this photo appeared in 1999.)

I've never been to Canada, so which areas of Canada would you recommend for a first time tourist, and reasons to support that recommendation?

Maritimes (east coast) - Lots of ocean smells and more seafood than you could possibly eat.
Quebec - Tons of scenery and oodles of culture.
Ontario - Lots of precambrian rock in the north and thousands of cottage and vacation spots in the south.
Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta (prairies) - Lots of flat.
British Columbia (west coast) - Lots of mountains.
The North (Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut) - Lots of cold.

It's difficult to recommend one particular region. Each has its benefits and drawbacks, and each has its own unique culture with multiple cultures intertwined.
