  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

Ask a Canuck

do you have a love hate relationship with the USA like UK does with France?

Not really. The former and late prime minister Pierre Trudeau explained our relationship with the US thusly:

"Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt."

Do you have a canadian 'nessie' living in Lake Winnipeg? :D

Yes, but it lives in Lake Manitoba. It's called Manipogo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manipogo

Lake Champlain also has a sea monster which is called Champ. The northernmost tips of Lake Champlain are in Canada, so I guess he counts.

There may be others, but I would have to research them and it's my day off.

What's the coldest any of you have experienced in Canada (I mean you personally, I am sure somewhere in the north has been ludicrously cold)?

It was -46 C (-58 with the windchill) here in Edmonton, Alberta, on Sunday, 13 December 2009. . .

I don't remember the numbers, but I told a friend in Australia how cold it was (it was well below zero and the windchills were in the minus 40s) and he said, "I can't even imagine temperatures that cold."

For the record, in case you're curious, the record low here in Canada occurred in Snag, Yukon, on February 3, 1947. The temperature reached -63.0C (-81.4F).

A wee bit chilly I must say.

Brent Butt is another funny comedian... and he's from Saskatchewan! :)
Here he is in his popular comedy show Corner Gas. This is just part of the first episode...

I'm from rural SK as well, so it was so cool to see a show like this on TV... and you would have to be from Saskatchewan to get a lot of the more subtle jokes. (For example, there's one joke in the show where they can't remember their own house number; in a small town, everyone knows where each other lives, and their mailing address is a box number so house numbers aren't usually used for much of anything.)

Another interesting thing about Canada is that the culture is quite a bit different from the east and the west... in fact, each province has its own culture. I would be in for quite a culture shock if I went to the Maritimes for example; it would be like visiting a new country. That's just what happens in such a huge country though; the USA, and Russia are the same way in that regard. You get so many unique, interesting cultures under one roof.

And then there's Newfoundland. They speak their own English there:

Speaking of Newfoundland, here is a sketch from a TV show called 'Codco'. It features a young comedian (dark hair) named Tommy Sexton. Tommy was openly gay and, sadly, died of AIDs in 1993, one year after Codco wrapped up. Tommy, in fact, plays a gay priest in this sketch:

Your favourite nursery rhyme?

(I'll also ask the Brits, because I'm curious whether they have different favourites?)

When did you know you were a Canadian or came out as a Canadian ?

Parts of East Van are as dodgy as it gets. If you dress nice, you will be offered crack by atleat 3 different people in 5 minutes. And if you act nice, one of them will suck your dick. :)

Stand up comedians? how about Russell Peters.
you are welcome.

I've never heard that. He's been on Joe Rogan's podcast and Rogan is known for outing joke thiefs.

I'm gonna watch more of this. I enjoyed that clip a lot. Thanks for posting it.

Aye, before he was big he use to do the UK a lot and it seems he took back a lot of the better jokes. Gina Yashere outed him on the Stuart Goldsmith podcast for nicking her Punani/exotic fruit joke- she even called him on it in person, he admitted it and offered to stop using it and pay her for his past use. Well he done neither and carried on using it.
