Ask Me Anything About Opera ?

POP OPERA as was Jesus Christ Superstar in its day!

Never call these musical works operas............ please!

Opera: A theatrical presentation in which a dramatic performance is set to music.

Bare: A Pop Opera

This is the actual name for this musical. Technically a musical is an opera. So don't reprimand me on my own opinions. You may think an opera is only that of a classical-type, but I consider every musical an opera. I think the terms are interchangeable, so don't shoot down my opinions on your own personal bias on modern theatre.

Males:

1. Hunky as Hell Nathan Gunn ( baritone ) who just won the first Beverly Sills Prize for outstanding singer and the $50.000.00 to go along with the award.

Nathan Gunn on cover of Opera News.
Nathan Gunn ( right ) in The Pearl Fishers Les Pecheurs de Perles
Nathan Gunn as Billy Budd in Munich.

I know it's not Grand Opera but the voice and all the rest.

3. Patricia Ciofi ( soprano ) who has done a lot of recording and loved by record labels and the public. She has yet, but will break through onto the opera stage with a bit more time. It will be a crime were this not to happen.

With regret could not find a youtube for her

Now a question if you could what would your dream part in an opera to sing be and why?

Males:

Rolando Villazon with outstanding and gorgeous Anna Netrebko in an outrageous production of MANON by Jules Massenet.

2. Rolando Villazon ( tenor ) who won first prize at the Domingo Operalia.

Unfortunately he has had to cancel all performances for at least 4 months due to an illness that his publicist won't disclose.

Did you see that production when it played here in Los Angeles? I do not think the production played at the Met.

I am not sure it was so outrageous as it was inventive and challenging. It was most creative.

How many opera are based on real life persons or events? I can name now three off of the top of my head....use to be two Nixon in China about Nixon's 1972 visit to China and Un Ballo Maschera loosely based on the assination of Gustav III of Sweden in 1793 or 92 not sure. So I am taking a wild guess that the opera Don Carlo is based on the eldest son of Philip II of Spain with his first wife the Infanta Maria of Portugal.

Okay you made a list of female parts that you would love to sink your teeth in, however the last time you check you are not female so with that in mind the voice you have be that tenor or bass what male part would you want to sink your teeth in?

Several years ago I saw Le Nozze di Figaro with both Ildabrand D'Arcangelo (as Figaro and who I think you had mentioned earlier in this thread) and Bo Skovhus (as Count Almaviva) at the Met. Which one of the two do you think is the sexiest?

.

WOW! two versions of the same answer to my "frivolous" opera question. How marvelous. Thanks. Daniels is a doll, but I must concur with you that on most days I'd go for Ildebrando D'Arcangelo. ...
