Asparagus season

I’ve never encountered white asparagus in any stores here.

It is very much a European thing. (I remember not ever seeing green asparagus in Belgium when I've been there, only white, and being surprised about it.)

It's labor-intensive -- you have to keep piling the soil up the asparagus as it grows so that it doesn't get sunlight and turn green -- so it's expensive. And the flavor is delicate, but not (to my taste, anyway) distinctive enough for it to be worth the extra money for ordinary consumers. In the US, I suspect one encounters white asparagus only in higher-end restaurants.

Well, I saw white asparagus in Japan...
going to weekly markets etc. you`ll find the green and white 50:50 side by side even in France and Belgium.

The green variant is not come from the same plant, it is a specially bred hybrid.

Asparagus as a portent of calamity:

My thesis is the following: Asparagus only shows up in films and television shows to serve a harbinger of doom. The second they appear on screen, you can bet something is amiss or that inevitable disaster is afoot.
