Australian Open tennis

I don't usually root for the top player but I'd love to see Rafael Nadal win this year. He's not just a clay-court guy anymore and he can easily win this.

I have to admit I have never really liked Nadal all that much. I also (now) like Djokovic even less. I'd still like to see Murray win his first - or even Tsonga of Monfils (I seriously doubt either of them has a chance tho').

Just a comment - Roger looked very much ''back in form' in dispatching Safin.

Elena Dementieva beat Samantha Stosur, but wow what a fight Stosur put up. Dementieva is just too good at getting out of bad situations though. So often with Dementieva it looks like the set has her opponents name on it but then she creeps up and steals it (albeit very narrowly tonight). :D

Jelena Dokic has been the comeback story while Carla Suarez Navarro has been the big surprise giant-slayer story. I hope both can continue on as they have been. For both of them to reach the Quarters would be cool.

It's nice to see both Blake and Roddick in good playing form, and both looking so good as well ;). Both of them are so hot and I want to see both of them in the Quarters (although Blake has a tough 4th-round opponent in Jo-Wilfried Tsonga).
I think that Fernando Verdasco (another hottie), has a good shot at beating Andy Murray because while both of them have blown their opposition off the court so far, his scores have been more consistent than Murray's. But it'll be tough for him because Murray seems kind of destined to win this if the bookmakers have any idea what they're talking about.

i would love to see dokic keep going the way she is
i want safina or dementieva to win

not sure bout the mens thoe

I am not following it as closely as I have in the past, but I will watch the semis and the finals. On the ladies' side I think Serena is probably now the favorite because she is usually very opportunistic when many of the higher seeds start falling.

Its more interesting with men as probably my top five favorite players are still playing. I would prefer that one of the players without a major win, but that is not likely. So I guess I should say I hope that at least one of them makes it to the final as Tsonga did. Maybe this time he can win it all.

Wow. The match isn't over yet but Roger Federer is in deep shit right now. Tomas Berdych, the 20th-seed, is really taking it to him. He's won the first two sets of the match, 7-6, 6-4 and Federer just took the third 6-4. Can you imagine the uproar if Federer doesn't make the Quarterfinals?!

mmm theres still has to be hope for roddick

amazing matches between federrer and berdych and dokic and kleyabova

bartoli is the womens dark horse

Dokic was inspiring tonight. Go girl!!! (!)

I'm not sure that Dokic will beat Dinara Safina (who will be hungry in the quarters after her close shave with Alize Cornet) but I'm sure she'll give it 100%, and anything is possible with her now. Even if she doesn't win she's made the ultimate comeback.

It's wonderful to see Andy Roddick doing so well. Djokovic awaits him in the Quarters, and I think Roddick has a really good chance yet. Djokovic leads 2-1 in their head-to-head but it's hardly a convincing lead, and in their last match, Roddick beat Djokovic in straight sets. What I'm worried about though, is who he could face in the semis. He'll face the winner of the Quarter between Juan Martin del Potro and Roger Federer.

I am so gonna watch the match between Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and James Blake tonight. I haven't even seen James play yet because he's basically been ignored by the coverage, but hey, tonight he's on the big stage at Rod Laver Arena. I hope James wins. It'll be an amazing match I'm sure. I hope Blake is at his hard-hitting best tonight.

I'm actually amazed Jelena managed to win that match. I feel for Alisa Kleybanova tho' - she was playing the entire crowd (and probably the whole of Australia) but didn't let it get to her and put up a remarkably mature performance.

Dokic said herself that she was physically exhausted - and I feared that very nasty rolling of her ankle late in the 3rd set looked like it could be game over. I felt her game was not as sharp against Kleybanova as it had been in her previous 2 matches - she was struggling much more with her serve, her focus and concentration wasn't as tight as previously - but mentally...she just seems incapable of giving up.

I think it is possibly best summed up by this quote from an article on the Australian Open website, just following her win over 11th seed Caroline Wozniacki:

We have seen the helpless Jelena Dokic, back in 2004 when her first career was beginning to peter out and she looked a forlorn figure on the circuit. We have seen the deliriously happy Jelena Dokic earlier this week, when she won her first match at Rod Laver Arena in eight years and beat Anna Chakvetadze. Now, we are seeing the real Jelena Dokic. The former world No. 4 Jelena Dokic. The 'you will not have this point or this match while there is still breath in my body' Jelena Dokic. That Dokic, it seems, is back with a vengeance.

How will she go against Safina? I don't think she will win. She must be getting very tired by now - and we are talking the #3 seed. Safina will have to take a mental vacation (like she did against Cornet, so I guess anything is possible) - but, in reality, Jelena came into the tournament with an injury worry, she has conceded that she is not back to full match fitness - and I have concerns over her ankle after last night.

Whatever happens she has done herself (and us) proud. She IS back - and can only get better.

If her last few matches isn't Dokic at full match fitness, they'd better watch out when she is at full match fitness. :D

In an earlier interview, she said she felt she was only at 50-60%. I think she was maybe being a little hard on herself, but even so...

I was hoping (but not expecting) Baggy to beat Djokovic last night. At least we saw some flashes of his brilliance - but I don't doubt he will be back as a force again.

A BIG scare for Federer...after a pretty impressive match against Safin, he was all over the place against Berdych (who really should have beaten him). He pulled it out of the fire - but where did his game go in the first 2 sets?

The Del Potro v Cilic match was exciting to watch - both of them look capable of big things in the future.

Still some very good tennis to come...

The forecast on the website says Daniela Cibulkova will beat Elena Dementieva!! No freaking way. Cibulkova hasn't won a single tournament in her career, while Dementieva comes hot off the heels of Olympic Gold and 2 Tournament this year. I guess Dementieva's only weakness might be fatigue, but she's super-fit so I'm sure she's not feeling too fatigued.

Carla Suarez Navarro is through to the Quarterfinals in straight sets! It's so great she's proven her win over Venus was no fluke. It looks like she'll play the winner of Dementieva/Cibulkova.

^ Beat me to it.

I wouldn't worry about that forecast - he's been wrong more than he's been right...

I'm not sure what Monfils is doing at the moment - seems to be trying to play with Simon's head, rather than play him at tennis...

Holy Mother of Mary! Andy Murray, the pre-tournament favourite, just got beaten by Fernando Verdasco. I'll be watching the Blake/Tsonga match in about 15 minutes.

Hmmm - I really wanted Muray to win. I'm sure he'll be there soon tho' I still see him as a future (and not too far in the future) # 1.

Now I'll hope Tsonga wins. He's certainly my favourite of those remaining. I'll be quite surprised if it isn't a Rafa v Jo & Novak v Roger line up fo the semis.
