Australian Open tennis

Well - Rafa won. Deservedly, even tho' I was hoping Roger would. Great tennis - but it still strikes me that Rafa seems to have 'gotten into Roger's head' these days. Roger often doesn't seem to believe he should beat him anymore - with the result that he appears to be playing tentatively - without full confidence. He definitely seemed to be 'playing safe' instead of going for his shots - letting the ball bounce when once he would have hit it on the full, playing the ball back into the middle of the court instead of moving him around as much as he once would.

Still superbly high quality play tho'.

Roger's sob session was pretty pathetic I thought. As soon as he started bawling everyone suddenly changed from being happy for Rafa to sorry for Roger. I do still feel a bit sorry for him though. His display last night about sums up how much Rafa has broken him mentally over the last couple of years.

Awesome win for Rafa though. It's just too bad he wasn't allowed to celebrate too much because of Roger's sob session. Still, he was gracious enough to let Roger steal the limelight and took time out of his victory speech to tell Roger how much he respects him. What a guy! :D

^ I'm worried that Rafa's constant injuries will cause him early retirement, and a lot of people seem to agree with me. Still, he's just got the US Open to go and he's won all the slams. He's pretty much guaranteed to win the French Open, has a great shot at Wimbledon, and his new-found prowess on hard courts makes him dangerous at the US Open as well. Long live the new king Rafa. :D

Just thought I'd update on next years Australian Open, I think it's gonna be pretty exciting especially in the women's draw.

Not only with Kim Clijster's return and recent great form but also the return of Justine Henin and Alicia Molik who both announced they're leaving retirement to play tennis again just in time for next years open.

Imagine if Kim Clijsters and Justine met in the final again!! *drools*

Also Clijsters will be playing the Brisbane tournament instead of the Sydney one in the lead-up to the open which is suprising considering she's a past champion there..

Anyway, exciting times ahead at Melbourne Park :D

The 2010 Aussie Open can't come soon enough in my opinion. It definitely produced the best tennis of the slams this year, most likely because everyone was fresh.

Go Verdasco! Go Murray! I'd like to see someone new win OR Djokovic win a second AO.

Roddick and Fernando Gonzales are now in a 5th set. It's after midnight in Melbourne. Will be happy for either guy.

Now, the fun is really starting.

I'm surprised that Juan Martin lost. I'm sure that Federer will roll over Hewitt. And although I'm hoping not, I think that Murray will oust Nadal.

I expect Tsonga, Djokovic, and Davydenko also to get through.

Good luck to all your faves! I'm hoping for a new champ (or Djokovic repeating or even Roddick getting Slam #2) on the ATP side and Justine Henin for the women's championship.

Cilic into the semi's, beat Roddick 6-3 in the 5th. Rafa and Murray are playing right now.

YES!!! I just watched Tsonga roll Djokovic.

I have to say that I think Tsonga is one of the 'nice guys' of tennis - not to mention the fact that he is immensely exciting to watch. I would absolutely love to see him take out the Australian Open. That said - I also like Murray - but 'what will be will be' (which could be another Federer win). Oh well - we'll see. I have to admit I love the power and the passion of Tsonga - not to mention the anachronism of his on court exuberance and his off court reserve.

He certainly made himself an Australian favourite after his 2008 performance in the Australian Open. Would love to see him go all the way in 2010.

^ Yep, I'd like to see a new GS winner whether it be Tsonga, Cilic or Murray. IMO it's good for the ATP.

I would really like to see Cilic win it, he has played some fantastic tennis. Been a great tournament so far.

Venus and Davydenko really puked all over the Rebound Ace. Geesh!

Cilic & Murray just started their semi. I'm pulling for Cilic, too.

Best of luck to Justine in the final. If Serena's serve (and her mental toughness) pops like it can, Justine's in trouble.

Women's final:

Serena Williams def. Justine Henin 6-4 3-6 6-2

Federer vs. Murray will be on 3:30AMEST Sunday on ESPN2.

Woohoo, glad Serena won though I wish Venus would've instead. :p

I'm not a big fan of Murray but I hope he can win his first slam here in Australian Open 010. It will be tough. ;)

Venus could've won (her h2h is better against Justine) but she isn't as mentally tough as her little sister.

I'm pulling for Roger but Murray winning won't bother me. The Brits will be soooo happy. ;)

I was so rooting for Justine (went off that heifer Serena big time after her unsporting outburst at the US open). I can't believe she can be that huge and be #1. Oh well.

As for the Final - I like Federer, but would definitely prefer to see Murray win this time. Might be a tough ask tho' - we'll see.
