Avatar - Possible Best Picture nominee

Actually saw it after seeing Titanic two days ago. Pretty neat, and I liked the characters. It's an interesting text. It fits perfectly with the Cameron canon, and like all his movies, it shows disaster but the aftermath is hopeful enough to not wanna make you slit your wrists.

The Brilliant Director/Producer James Cameron did not have to put the actors through all that work for 2-plus yrs when he could have stuck to the basic computer animation..The average movie-goer will not see a difference in "Avatar's" animated characters VS the animated characters in "Shrek"...

Are you kidding? You must think everyone is REALLY stupid. Almost everyone I've seen comment on it has talked about how much more real the CGI is in this compared with other movies.

They needed the two years, especially Sam Worthington. He looked like he whittled away in the movie, and you can only fake that to a certain extent.

I don't know a single person named "everyone"...That certainly is not my name is it yours? I watched the film from beginning to end and there's nothing "memorable" about it on the level of any of the movies I mentioned in my first posting...

James spent too much money trying to come out of the box with a Monster-Hit after years of not producing a HIT...He could have saved the studio a lot of money and the actors a lot of down-time..."Avatar" will not be another "Titanic" in ticket sells here in the States..

The studio forked out Tons of Promotional cash to market "Avatar" internationally as well...At the end of the day you're looking at close to a Billion dollars that need to be made just so a profit can be seen..I'm not saying it can't be done over the winter break but it's highly unlikely...

LOL, it may not top Titanic but it's going to do very well. Over 100 mil domestically in 5 days so far.

And it doesn't need to make anywhere near 1 billion to be profitable. The studio gets like 80% of revenues the first week so they've already made back almost half what they spent on it. It needs to make at most 3-4 hundred mil more worldwide to turn a profit, which it will easily do.

The STORY itself isnt incredibly imaginative, just reminded me of basically Indians being driven off their land or something like that. and the Characters could have been a bit better, something to be desired there. But visuals were fantastic! Concepts were great: Using the Avatars through the machines, how the navi were so intune with animals and nature. So OVERALL

Worth the watch....not REALLY worth $10.50 for a ticket and 3D glasses im suppose to give back...but I still went and saw it anyway lol

I went to see it at the cinema last sunday. It was absolutely mind blowing, loved it so so much. Me and the bf thought it was the best film of the year without a doubt!

I spent the morning at the cinema watching Avatar. It was an enjoyable film, brought tears to my eyes in places and visually was extremely beautiful.

But that is about all I can praise it for. The story line was very basic lacking in any real interest. The images were the fruits of a fertile imagination but they lacked any reality, depth or emotion.

I like ScFi but I expect it to be feasible/logical and obey the rules of evolution. There was little in this film, as beautiful as it was, that was possible and I find it difficult to let my imagination wander when everything seems so soul-less and empty.

totally agree with you. it will be a shame that they won't find TEN better pictures to nominated for Best Picture come Oscar time.

Well I have to disagree. Sure the story was a little derivative but I didn't find it soulless or lacking any emotional depth.

I think the majority of film goers will agree with you there and especially those who saw it in 3D.

It was a spectacle, magnificent in its potrayal but unfortunately for me with no depth or reality to which I could hold on to and suspend my credulity.

Now the Lord of the Rings trilogy was a film in which every single scene was believable.

Avatar surpassed the 1 billion mark over the weekend worldwide (!)

MM, you'll be happy to know that I've warmed up a fresh plate of crow for you. ;)

Avatar has passed $1 billion in worldwide gross just 18 days into it's release.

No; but its almost gave me an orgasm.

Its absolutely breath taking.

Oscars here we come (!)

Have yet to see it, but plan to soon. With 10 nominations for the best picture, of course it will be nominated for best picture. However, Hollywood is more politcal these days and that trumps what is possibly "best". Have not seen "Precious", but from what I hear it is terrific. Terrific or not, it will likely be nominated and very likely win, with Oprah behind it.

From all the raves, it would be nice to have something popular like Avatar get nominated and actually win.

This is the Rihanna of movies, pretty package but no substance. Only Digicel looking for validation that something he likes is popular.
It is popular. Just read the news. #1 for 4 weeks going on 5. The movie has plenty of substance. Assuming you have even watched the movie in a theater, you are entitled to your opinion. But quit being a dick by trying to bring the many people down who have seen and enjoyed this movie. You just appear to be jealous that you are not capable of enjoying the things in life that others are.

Avatar (in 3d) is amazing. Don't over think it, just see it. The only negative for me was it was kind of dark in 3d. But the bottom line is it had a touching story in my opinion, very fitting for today. Also interesting how the main character basically finds a new life.. yeah just see it. lol
