Just a coincidence with your name but a lucky one.
At the risk of a topic swerve, there is a gay angle to the Northern clubs. In the commercial clubs of that era, girls danced alone or with friends but boys could only dance if it was with a girl. Alone was to be laughed at, two boys together would be thrown out. But at a Northern club everybody did their own thing, the music was all that mattered. That and maybe the amphetamines.
So if you were never going to have a girlfriend, you could go to a place where nobody would ever say;
"why haven't you got a girl, you queer or something?"
In a time when there were very few gay clubs, that was the next best thing and well worth having.
