Barack Hussein Obama <--- is OK now

What the fuck are you talking about? What does this have to do with OUR course of actions that CAUSED a dependence on foreign oil? Where did they force us to depend on them? Instead of comparing apples and oranges and cryptic metaphors could you provide some concrete, sensical, solid references? Names, dates, events, etc...

If you don't get it from what I said, you'll never get it. But I'll try again anyway:

It's irrelevant whether our actions caused this; they have the power. They have a stranglehold on us, just like Russia has on Europe. All they have to do is turn off the spigot, and we're screwed.
A stranglehold has nothing to do with causes; it has to do with existing facts. The existing fact is that they can destroy our economy in a minute by turning off the oil. "Names, dates, and events" are meaningless, because the only thing with meaning is that they have the power to destroy our economy. That's a stranglehold.

What EXACTLY, in concise terms, has the middle east done that directly resulted in our dependence on their oil?

They pumped it.

It's like feeding drugs to a kid -- he gets addicted. Once he's addicted, you have power over him. It isn't relevant whether you meant to have power or not, whether he came to you, or anything else; it's relevant only that you have power over him.

Do you suggest we stop buying their oil? If so, you'd better start buying gas in bulk, we're going to run out quickly and will be dry for a LOOOONG time.

Now, about those direct implications I requested a few posts ago, that whole cause and effect thing.......

There -- you gave the cause and effect thing yourself: without their oil, we're going to "run out quickly and will be dry for a LOOOONG time".

That condition means they have a stranglehold on our economy.

^Whoopty-fucking-doo, they control the oil we buy. First of all, the middle east isn't the only place that has oil. We CHOOSE to go to them. All of that is neither here nor there, the initial comment I was responding to said that they have a stranglehold on our economy.

Anyone who thinks the US economy is anyone else's fault but our own hasn't been paying attention to anything that's happened in the past century.

America can fix it's economy if we stop blaming other countries, learn from our mistakes for the first time in history, and make better, conservative economic decisions.

You keep throwing out stuff that's utterly irrelevant, while providing arguments that prove what you're denying.

Fault is irrelevant, motive is irrelevant. "They control the oil we buy" means they have a stranglehold on our economy.

We can end that situation, as you say, but the fact that we can end it doesn't change it.

Last time I checked there's a lot more to our economy than oil.

Find something that doesn't depend on it, though -- that's the problem.

Kulindahr, yeah, I agree with your noose analogy---we can wrap it around our neck ourselves or someone else can do it, but we will still hang when our footing is lost.

Rush Limbaugh stated that oil is the lifeblood of our economy. As often as he's wrong, he's not with that statement. All the economic talk in another thread failed to highlight that the price of oil skyrocketed over the last 8 years until the last few months when it dropped down like 80% from its height. Now people talk like our economy won't recover... and it seems like they forgot about the magic fluid that constantly burns up each of my suicidal avatars.

I used to listen to Rush, and he quite regular got things right -- when he stuck to the obvious. This one is very obvious, because oil isn't just about that magic fluid: our clothes, a great deal of household goods, paints, fertilizer, and many other things are made of oil -- perhaps remotest from most people's minds, the F-22 Raptors which have proven so deadly in battle are made to a large degree from oil!

Kuli we've got oil right there on the coast, a hop, skip, and a jump away.

True -- and it's almost all about ten years away from being useful.
And if certain sources are to be believed, we have in a certain area in Alaska more oil than all the Middle East combined... but it's even more than ten years from being useful, if it exists.

We have a stranglehold on our own economy if the government has 750 billion dollars to throw around. We have a dedicated working class that keeps pushing even though they're continually shitted on by the people who truly have a stranglehold on our economy, shady ass banks, investors, and government. THEY have the stranglehold on our economy though I see the American mantra of "blame somebody else" is still alive and well.

Sure, there are people who have strangleholds on our economy besides oil -- and the banks are good candidates.

So far, you're the only one suggesting anything about blame.

Oil permeates everything, from what we drive, to what we make, what we sell, what we eat. Plastic is made from oil. Our economy is pwned by oil. Arguing that, well, is arguing against reality.

That's why ending the ban on hemp in the U.S. would save us better than a percentage point on oil imports: it could replace plastics in a plethora of products, from grocery bags to six-pack holders to rope and more.

The fact that so many things have been made from oil could, if we decided to, give us a way to get off so much foreign oil: there's a technology referred to as "everything to oil", which while it isn't quite accurate makes a serious point, namely that anything made from oil can be made back into oil -- and a lot of other things can, too. The plants in operation take in non-recyclable plastics along with poultry slaughterhouse waste -- and turn out oil.

Marley is right that we can get out of the stranglehold; it will take some serious work, though.

... wait, wtf does any of this have to do with the OP?

The OP is about the prejudice against Muslims and the middle east manifested into obssession with Obama's middle name.

I think we were discussing the middle east when somebody said that the middle east controlled our economy. The dots connect if you squint with one eye and don't look out the other.

It all began here: http://www.justusboys.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4557299&postcount=48

There has never been a moratorium on calling him "Barrack Hussein Obama."

There has been a moratorium on calling him "Barrack HOO SAYYYYNNNNNNNN (hint hint muslim terrorism 911 al qaida) Obama."

See the difference?

so must we call Kim Jong Il , Kim Il?

Actually it depends. First of all, as it turns out, Kim is his family name. He is actually Mr. Kim. In Korean (which I don't speak) I'd call him Kim Jong Il, but in English I'd call him Jong Il Kim. For some reason a lot of the media haven't figured that one out.

Secondly, I don't know if he has one given name (Jong Il...like "Billy Bob") or whether he has a given name and a middle name that are truly separate and don't need to be used together. Not all too familiar with Korean names...

If they are truly separate, I'd probably call him Jong Kim or Il Kim, I suppose, depending on his preference of given name.

I believe that every man sworn in as president has done so using their whole given name. Being refered to ro called that name later in his admistration had nothing to do with theat used in his swearing in. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was rarely refered to with that whole "title" except in books later in life.

It is only appropriate for Obama to use his whole given name. This is not news. What will be news is what he puts his hand on when he takes the oath. When he was sworn in as Senator, it was a copy of the Koran and not a traditional Bible. He made such a strong point of being a Christain to separate himself from "rumors" while running for office. This announcement will interesting to hear.

AMEN! I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees it. I'll apologize to everyone if someone can show me one post that reads like this:

Franklin D Roosevelt

or

George -------->*William*<-------- Bush

or

Hillary Rodham Clinton

Where'd that "William" come from?

It's George Walker Bush. His middle name is his paternal grandmother's maiden name.

Contrary to popular belief, she was not related to the Mayor John Street political family from Philadelphia, which could have made for a rather embarrassing, but possibly accurate, combination of surnames.
