Hi Guys,
There are a wide range of ages here on JUB. I am sure that I am not the only one ( and i'm under 40) who remembers life before the internet.

Well porn is so accessible now through the internet, we can easily get any image or vid to satisfy our every sexual need.
However what did we do before the age of the internet? Would love to hear your stories and views, was it trying to hide that porno mag from the top shelf underneath a newspaper at your local shop/store?

Please tell your stories and give me your views.

look forward to some interesting discussion.

Jonty

Hello. My name is Lexington, and I'm 37 years old. :)

When I hit puberty, and the hormones were raging, I did have one (lame) source for porn - the Playboy Channel. Channel 19. Our family didn't subscribe to such filth, of course, but it took us all of, oh, ten minutes to figure out that if you pressed down Channel 18 and Channel 20 at the same time, and moved the finetuner JUST SO, you'd get a good picture. Black and white. No sound. But a good picture. Obviously, it had to be done when everyone was asleep, so there was a lot creeping downstairs late at night. And it had to be watched with both ears intent on hearing if there were parents coming downstairs to check up on you. Between that, and the fact that it was softcore straight porn, it's amazing I got any satisfaction from it at all. But hell, I was a teenager, I was horny as hell, and I didn't know I was gay yet. It should've been a clue that I was always a lot more interested in seeing the guy's ass than the woman's breasts, but I just figured that meant I was seeing something more hardcore. :)

But the Playboy Channel was more a supplement than a main course. (Given the difficulties, it would almost HAVE to be.) I'd always had an overactive imagination, and I eventually learned that the porn in my head is superior to the porn on the screen. I can change the actors, the body parts, the positions, the setting, whatever. And since then, that's remained my primary outlet. I'll occasionally look at porn, or - more often - erotica. (I seem to work better with the written word, for some reason.) But I generally use these as "fantasy fuel" - they give me ideas on new fantasies, or tweaks to old ones. (See latest blog for PG-version of same.) I've built up quite a collection of sexual fantasies in my time, and I can call them up whenever and wherever. I like those better than any porn, since they're tailored precisely to my likes.

I stole my parents dirty magazines and watched straight porn just to see the guy's big dicks ;)

because of early jobs, i have pretty much had a computer in front of me for 30 years. i was a CHARTER member of AOL...i paid 4.95 a month for service, and ironically, the service has not changed much and its 28.95 now. i am digital all the way and love it.
and yes, some of the first things i hunted down was porn...i'm suprised i'm not blind by now...LOL

yes I stole my parents porn too( well probably my dads really) but remember there always being a "one for the ladies" page.

Also remember going to the market with mates and buying porno mags at the stall. It was fun really thinking back on it! Its too easy for teenagers now.

I'm with Lex on this, my brain has always been the best porn generator. If it needs stimulation then written erotica works best. Visual porn has to be extremely hot to really work or I have to be totally horny at the time. But before the internet it was passing round stolen sex mags, hiding them in drawers etc. If I managed to get hold of a Gay one I would guard it with my life. Still have a few somewhere on the boat.

That was always the problem, keeping porn hidden. However I'm sure parents were always really aware anyway, given there were once teenagers. All that stress for nothing, they may as well just have given us it! but it was fun trying to source it, no denying that.

I think when my parents were teenagers a Naked table leg would cause a "knee trembler" ;)

Ever since I was about 8 or 9 years old I remember the internet with the old Prodigy service. So I've been used to it all my life, however it wasn't till I was 15 or 16 that I learned of everything you could do on the internet (research, porn, chatrooms, and instant messengers were the biggies). Its funny because I used to be in the chatrooms all time time as a young teen and ever since I dumped AOL back in 1999/2000 for broadband and a few years ago when Yahoo got rid of all the user created rooms, I've never been back. It's almost as if the entire "chatroom" world died for me that day they took away the yahoo user rooms, LoL.

The one thing I have a hard time comprehending is how much more difficult it must have been to be gay before the internet. Everything from dating, to sex, information, and support is now so easy to obtain. It helped me out so much in my teens that there was basically no "transition" into gayness for me. I felt like I had all the info and support in front of me. Plus it was never hard to find someone to talk to or meet who was the same age or was gay like me ... all from the comfort of my PC.

We actually met people in person; and, there were always the pictures of naked people in the National Geographic!!!! :D

Okay nobody make fun of me. ;) My dad never kept porn in the house, and we didn't get a computer until my senior year of high school.

what did I do for a fix you might ask. Well I use to watch MTV, for the hot videos or.........

sometimes I would go to the mall and buy Tommy Hillfiger boxer briefs, that came in the box with some random hottness on the front, and yeah, that how I got my rocks off.

I'm so pathetic.](*,)

I was fortunate in my late teens as was working as a technician in a Theatre in Oxford. There is a higher incidence or at least a greater acceptance of being Gay in the performing arts. I got introduced to "The Stage Club" a semi illegal, at the time, Gay bar. This is where I first started "hooking up." Somewhat later I had a few "bad" experiences using phone / newspaper dating. When I first got the internet it opened up a whole new world of possibilities to meet people, never mind the porn. Being a rural person with an allergy to cities it was a godsend and I have met in person many people from the internet with whom I am still friends. It doesn't mean we hooked up, although that has happened on a few occasions, It means we interact, have things in common and our lives are mutually improved from our meeting.

Thanks to the internet I now have a "long distance B/F" who I may never meet in person but who I have talked to more than my own parents and who knows more about me than anyone, as I do about him. We have enriched each others lives and are realistic about the future and support each other in it. These months of happiness would not have come about if it were not for JUB and the internet.

My apologies I drifted off topic there. Ignore.

no that's a cool story, the internet has made things easier for a lot of genuine people such as yourself, it's just a shame it also has a darker side.

Just before the Internet was the Usenet. It still exists, but not many people use it or even know about it any more. You had to have a Unix account with a provider to access it and all you saw was ascii text. Most colleges were participants. There were thousands and thousands of discussion groups. The messages resided on the mainframe computer of your provider. They were accessed via a Unix news reader program. My favorite news reader was a program called TIN. (I don't know what that stood for.) The premiere gay group was named soc.motss (society - members of the same sex). It still exists, and there are old timers who still post there. The alt.sex.* newsgroups were where the action was. You could download pictures posted by others, uncompress them with some Unix program that I can't remember the name of, and then save them to your computer. There was a Compuserve program that could be used to view them. All of this was done under DOS (anyone remember that?). I still have some pictures I saved from the Usenet in those days. Today, the Usenet is overflowing with spam. The groups can be accessed on the Internet through Google. I still occasionally access them with TIN from the Unix server where I work.

My dad musta thought he was clever by hiding his stash in the top shelf in the corner of his closet in his "library." All those National Geographic and PC Magazines obscuring the goodies. But I was looking at his oldest National Geographics when I ran across a bit of boobie. So I looked further and got some real good stuff, with the hot guys with the girls. So whenever I was home alone, I'd rifle through Dad's closet, making sure to get everything ready to quickly put away, and when I heard the door open I'd stuff it all back and hop on the couch in the other room like nothing happened.

I didn't get the internet until about four years ago, so I got through my teens without it.

I just used my imagination a lot, I guess. It wasn't really that difficult.

In my early teens we didnt have the internet, even though it was around. At that time i used to jerk off to women in lingerie ads (lol I had a whole collection of them form usnday newspapers). I could find pics of women in little very easily but nearly nude men was a lot harder. I didnt really care for most of the pics of men i found in ads, except for the JCPenny catalog but I did love one pic from Sports Illustrated of a naked decathlete. I loved it even before i knew iliked men and when i did realize that i jerked off to his pic many times

Great question! Before the internet, we used to get the weekly Gay mags and write letters in answer to the personals. And then wait for a reply. Or we used to reply to ads and then wait to hear the phone ring in the hope that he wanted to meet us. We used to go to Clubs and cruise guys. Then we used to swap phone numbers and ring each other, on a landline, because that was also pre cell phone days. Unless it went more than 3 days of course because after 3 days you knew he wasn't interested!

We used to use our imagination. We used to shake and quake with fear and anticipation if we saw a mag that had a naked man in it. We used to go out for sex, now we can just order in without any small talk beyond "Hey there, what are you up for".

It was a whole different world.
