Best Place in the United States to live?

Hey guys...

Going to be moving yet again, and I was wondering where you guys think I should go. Im looking for a place that has great weather, somewhat urban, and is pretty inexpensive. I love cities like Chicago, Pittsburgh, NYC and the such, but not sure. Was moving to Greensboro, NC but most say that there is not much opportunity for me there. Any Ideas/

I would agree with ONLY putting Portland, OR higher...

I travel ALL OVER the U.S. and have been EVERWHERE...

#1 - Portland, OR

#2 - San Francisco

#3 - Los Angeles

All kind of expensive...

North Carolina is a BEAUTIFUL state -- the HUGE problem with NC as a gay man (in my opinion) is that the so-called christians that DOMINATE that state DON'T WANT US THERE... I suppose Raleigh/Durham would probably be the most liberal part of the state (due to the university)...

Inexpensive and Gay Friendly don't mix...

AND...

I SUSPECT there is a REASON (education) for that...

The 4 months of summer that Chicago has makes it worthwhile to stick around for the bitterly-cold other 8. Always something to do in the city, you can live in the suburbs and take the train in no problem, and, gosh-darn, it's a beautiful place!

Yeah, great weather and inexpensive don't mix either. Maybe Phoenix or someplace in that vicinity? Cheaper than SF at least.

Of more importance than the place itself, is whether or not it is the place for YOU to be. I've lived all over the country and I wouldn't trade Florida for anyplace BUT no matter where you choose to go, make sure you can SURVIVE there and make a living. Every city has it's own set of skill needs and if you can't find a job there, no matter how much you like it, you will be miserable. Do your homework BEFORE you move anywhere.

Get used to it ... almost every place that's good to live is expensive to live.

Warm weather ... at a premium, and so it's expensive.

Good economy ... well, then everyone's making money, with expensive living a result.

Gay Friendly ... assumptions of discretionary income, and expensive is next on the menu.


That being said ... I love L.A. for all those things and more. The traffic is crappy, the cops suck ... everything else is good. It can cost a fortune to live here (if you want the breathable air on the West Side that's an important 10-degrees cooler than the rest of the reclaimed desert) ... but if you can afford it, it's practically paradise on earth.

People are plentiful ... which, while it has its downsides, means that there's tons of cool people to meet and more.

Ohh...forgot to add.. The perception that it rains every day in Seattle/Portland is just a bit exaggerated. Sure they can get quite a bit of rain in the fall/winter but summers are downright spectacular...you can go weeks without seeing a single cloud in the sky AND on average it stays in the 70s and low 80s (when it does get hotter it only lasts for a day or two).

I notice you're from LA -- my understanding is that people who live in Portland are under strict orders to tell everybody it's a horrible place to live and they shouldn't move there...

"To live"... just that, "to live": so vague, so meaningless. Like "red": "red" what?

Some people won´t dare to live in an area without subway system, and some will never consider "life" not having a home with a grassy backyard. Some call hell six months of snowy winter and for others it´s evident hell is any place above 90 º F.

So what are you really asking?

Yes that is very true lol. A lot of people in the Northwest like to keep their cities secret...especially from "dirty Californians" as they're quite affectionately referred to as

HA! ^^^That is actually so true :$.

Seattle is a great place. Great people, good restaurants and clubs, many artsy places, but, like alot of cities are becoming, it's kind of expensive.
The weather is also nice too, especially in the spring and summer, despite the rumors of it always raining (something made up to keep out the dirty Californians)...

No one's mentioned Boston, NYC, Philly, DC, Atlanta!

Do you East Coast guys really not like your town?

I mean, I live in the ultraconservative Midwest, which is cheap but dull as dishwater and the cultural climate here really encourages expatriation.

SOMEbody in SOME of these East Coast cities has gotta like their town, right?

I'm looking forward to relocating this year, too.

And its a COOL town...

Having said that...

I still stand behind my 3 top choices...

IF ONLY Portland, San Fran, or LA would lower there home prices...

California is way too expensive to live, unless you want to live in Northern California.
