I voted for 43 just to screw up your poll. lol

Actually if I were to look back on history at these times the most influential on the course of America would be Reagan, Clinton and then 43 in that order.

The people who pay my bills want me to go do something though so I will have to reply in detail more so later.

I will say I wouldnt give the title best to any of them.

Out of that list, Reagan most definitely. Here's how I would rank the ten.

Reagan
Clinton
Nixon
Bush, Sr.
Johnson
Bush, Jr.
Ford
Kennedy
Carter
Obama

More people have voted for Bush 43 than Obama!?

More people have voted for Bush 43 than Obama!?

That would be because the Democrats on this board hold Obama to a higher standard than his performance to date.

But the Republicans on this board absolutely worship George W. Bush and everything he stands for.

Clinton--His real inclination was liberal, and that's what we saw the first two years. He attempted to reform health care. He attempted to end the ban on gays in the military. His emphasis on investing in America's future particularly through education and building infrastructure was good. But he had difficulties getting a Democratic Congress to go along with some of those ideas.

Once Congress shifted to the Republicans, he developed his strategy of triangulation co-opting Republican issues and ameliorating them. So he got things done and the credit for doing them. But he didn't cave on everything, even shutting down the government when the Republicans would not compromise.

He also balanced his budget and better.

Obama succeeded where Clinton failed on DADT and health care reform, but his security policy has been inadequate. He continued too much of the Patriot Act and did not find a way to close Guantanamo. Further, whatever efforts he has made at triangulation have been stymied by Republican intransigence.

Johnson's War on Poverty, Great Society, and leadership on civil rights were magnificent, but his escalation of the war in Vietnam when it was clearly a losing proposition was unforgivable.

Reagan, on the other hand, introduced supply-side economics that even his Vice-President had described as voodoo. His defense spending was so out of control that he never balanced a budget and increased the national debt significantly. Then there was Iran-Contra that he couldn't even see was illegal until well into the Congressional hearings. Then there was his silence and inaction on AIDS. If it weren't for Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, there would be nothing for the administration to show on AIDS. Reagan I would place ahead of only W.

I've never really understood why so many people like Reagan.

His ridiculous economic ideas led us down the path to our current depression. He sang the praises of tax cuts even as he raised taxes eleven times during his administration. He sang the praises of balanced budgets, even as he ran up a deficit greater than all previous deficits in American history combined. He sang the praises of small government, even as he massively increased the size of the federal government.

And he was so demented while in office, he was unable to recognize even the members of his own cabinet. (Howard Baker was called in to run the White House in the president's "absence.")

Clinton by far who did more for the economy and then was wrecked by GWB.

Worse was 8 years of an actor playing the role of president Ronnie Reagan.

I'm having a Bill Clinton moment. It depends on what you mean by "recent"?

My vote here would be none of the above. My actual vote would be for Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Didn't have to work a day in his life. - Came from old Dutch money, but devoted himself to a lifetime of public service. Got us through the Depression and WWII. Elected to four terms. Wow!

Thinking about Clinton, kinda makes me wish Hilary had won.

If Hilary is anything like Clinton then maybe our economy can rebuild itself more efficiently

It is a toss up between Clinton and Reagan. I like them both.

^ Had he been president in recent years, FDR would have been impeached by the Republicans, because of his relationship with Lucy Mercer.

I haven't been enthralled by ANY of the Presidents listed, and I could only come up with one or maybe two who I thought were "more good than bad" - and I ended up with Clinton. Even at that, his watch included four TERRIBLE pieces of legislation which he was very happy to sign:

Don't Ask, Don't Tell
NAFTA
Telecommunications Act of 1996
DOMA

(in that sequence, I think, if I remember correctly)

True, he was "forced" on DADT, as San Nunn and others were all set to force through legislation far more draconian than anything that had ever existed before on that topic, they had the votes to do so, and DADT was the sorry compromise.

Too bad that I couldn't consider Obama. If he had stayed true to his campaign promises and held his own against the Republicans instead of repeatedly caving, I would have considered him not only the best among the ten listed, but probably the second-best President in all of American history.

Even though FDR had problems as well (such as packing the Supreme Court to fit his own agenda, and the Japanese internments), he holds the top position all alone. His way of getting us out of a Depression worked...and it's the only way to get us out of the doldrums. And it's 100% lost on Republicans right now. And our involvement in World War II was one of the few times in history that I can think of, that we were entirely justified to intervene in "other countries' problems" while our other choices of where to intervene or not intervene have generally been rather capricious and doubtful at best.

In general I agree with Lucky7's comments the most, including Nixon being quite under-appreciated. He and Obama are the two on the list who I thought to be equally "good and bad." (NO, I DIDN'T SAY GOOD IN BED, GUYS, GET YOUR MINDS OUT OF THE GUTTER, LOL)
