I'd have whacked her over the head with a washing powder box and stuffed her in the dryer she loved so much... but seriously, i wouldn't have backed down either - people that think there so superior to everyone else really need to be taken down a peg or two.
But your boyfriend probably just finds confrontations akward, and tries to deal with them in the easiest way to avoid an arguement... people are different, you can't expect for him to deal with things the same way you do - don't lay this on him.
