Boy set on fire by classmates

You know, I can barely even contemplate the specifics of this story, let alone imagine the agony of his mother.

I admire her for the strength she showed in the interview, that though she could have spouted all kinds of vitriol against these kids, their parents, and the horses they all rode in on, the message she wanted to send was that this kind of violence is endemic to our society, and we all have to have a part in ending it.

I concur with everyone else, though, who said that if this was someone they loved, they would be hard pressed to stay out of jail themselves. I believe I could take pleasure in hurting someone who did something like this to someone I loved.

I think the perps and their families should have to pay for 100% of the kid's medical expenses for the rest of his life, and be arrested automatically anytime anything bad happens to him.

Satisfying as it would be to burn their faces off with a blowtorch one by one, I think a penalty that actually benefits the victim is better.

They were probably much to dumb to understand what they were doing in the first place. It wasn't exactly an accident, but I doubt they'd thought of the possible second degree burns beforehand.

Anyone that has any amount of sympathy for the kids who did this is a fool. Do you remember being 15? I do. I didn't ever consider lighting someone ON FIRE. What the fuck! Glad they are being prosecuted as adults and I hope they all rot in prison until the day they die.

ParentS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG i just viewed the video those little fucking crumbs of the earth need to have the same thing done to them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think parents are always to blame at all. I think that kids have a mind of their own and choose (somewhat) what they want to do.

I am assuming that one of the kid's parents is to blame, but who knows what the other little assholes' stories are. Maybe the one big douche convinced all of their weak personalities and they agreed to do it.

This is so sad though, I really hate that society really hasn't changed in this way. Kids are still assholes to each other and really, I think it's a lot about acceptance of differences. Enough parents out there have their own judgments and pass those on their children and this in turn creates a pretty hateful society :(

How couldn't they know the repercussions of setting someone on fire? That's like dropping a baby into the deep end of a swimming pool. The results are obvious.

I don't know, but apparently for what ever reason, those boys held such disregard for the repercussions that they went through with it. Is that unfathomable? I hate to say probably not, but just look at the many here who out of anger, or whatever reason have admitted their disregard for the repercussions of setting some one on fire. It's kind of sad actually that the mother shows such strength to deliver a message only to have it fall on deaf ears.

I'm not defending the boys, they need to learn hard that they shouldn't have done what they did and that now they must endure some heavy consequences. Also, I'm not blaming the parents, but where is their responsibility? They could at leats release a statement or comment that they are ashamed at the actions of their children.

Kids any age should know not to set a person on fire, this is ridiculous and they should be sent to jail for a long time.

I don't see your point. The victim shouldn't have to pay, and neither should his family. And since this isn't a civilized country, we don't have public medical care, so someone has to pay. The kids who did it are the cause; it should be their families' financial burden, not the innocent victim's.

Shit like this always has happened. The world hasn't become more violent, you just hear about it more often with world news.

isn't that the fucking truth?

some kids are just fucking crazy. no need to speculate on the causes in general because it's always a case by case scenario.

and blaming it on shit like video games or Hillary Clinton just makes you look like a complete idiot.

thinking about it more today (when did this happen BTW) this better not be swept up under the table i want all 5 of them losers to fry in the electric chair!!!!!!!

These young men are the evidence that we as a society are not keeping the caring of our children and staying in contact with them as an important value and priority. Truly, as horrifying as it is, it is not at all surprising.

As an alternative, I would put them in positions of getting theapy for years, and doing community service for long hours that they will eventually recognize that there is something terribly wrong about their lives, maybe we can remediate a few of them. But this is the norm for many now.

The question, is what are we willing to do to begin to tilt the playing field in a more favorable position?

Every child with whom I grew who were considered to be "bullies" were from families that were on the "fringe" of society's rules.
They knew the rules alright, but refused to respect them, for whatever reason they felt excluded or exempt from them.

One dad was a cop--he was a miserable man and so were his sons.
One couple were more interested in the country club and their golf scores.

What am I getting at? Children learn what they live.

These children are a direct correlation to their parents' opinions of society, and how they interact as families.

I bet the families of these hoodlums are laughing behind closed doors while they feign outrage and confusion at what their children have done while in the public eye.

Let the families pay for this young man's hospital bills, for his rehabilitation, and take the boys away from their families and society and never, never let us see them again.

really?
I agree with everything else you said, but I bet the parents are wishing they never even had kids right now. I'm sure they're ashamed, and trying to find anyone or anything else they can to blame their children's violent tendencies on.
