BREAKING: Keith Olbermann out at MSNBC, last broadcast tonight

i always thought he and rachal maddow were .... well ... gas bags
HOW in the world do they take the same information everyone else has and arrive at some of the asinine conclusions they do? They are no better, really, that Rush Limbaugh or Shawn Hannity, or any of dozens of media "personalities" who present wholly biased opinion as "news".

I don't dislike the guy --- hell i don't know him --- but i surely won't miss him. When does Maddow get the hook?

It not news. It's an opinion based show disguised as news.

exactly my point --- these shows are wholly opinion ... and most are foisted on the public as "news shows" .... of course lots of viewers will readily accept it as news and spread it as fact at the water fountain tomorrow at work ...

CNN's Anderson Cooper has reported the following tonight:

Olbermann's contract has expired and he and NBC decided not to renew. Comcast was not a part of that decision since they do not officially take over until next week. IMO, NBC was bracing for Comcast's more conservative leaning. Effective Monday, the new lineup is:

8PM Larry O'Donnell

9pm Rachel Maddow

10pm The Ed Show

Well, at least he didn't break his record of never having someone on who disagreed with him during his entire tenure at MessNBC.

I never considered Countdown (or Fox News, the now-finished Larry King, etc.) a NEWS show. To me, a news show features many different stories and, by definition, is NOT entirely political on most days.

I've complained for years that, even though we have four "news" cable channels nationally (CNN, Headline News, MSNBC, Fox News Channel), there is not really any news to be found anywhere during any part of the evening. Headline News - which was formerly the "most newsy" of all channels with tons of different soundbites often repeating a lot - is actually the least newsy of all of these channels in the evenings.

I will miss Keith GREATLY. Yes, he was a type of "leftie demagogue" who was often vilified by "the right" (and there's a reason I won't use the word "conservative"), and he was one of only two easily-found "demagogues" on that side (Ed Schultz is the other), but those on the right are fine with the 4,129 (OR SO IT SEEMS) demagogues they have speaking for them and easily accessible in most or all radio or cable markets.

If I want to hear a demagogue who feels and believes like I do, I have to search with great difficulty. However, I can't HIDE from the demagogues who want the United States to fail. They're all over the media, especially radio. [Latino Americans, can you tell me what the political trends of Spanish-language talk radio are in the U. S.? I don't know and I've never seen it talked about.]

"Liberal" talk radio does have a few "demagogues" as well - think Mike Malloy right away - but their national appearance on terrestrial ["normal"] radio stations is limited very much by geographic region, and mostly limited to larger cities.

Admittedly it was a long time ago that I last did this, and I was using a better radio than most of the public has available, but a few years ago I tuned across the dial and I found Rush Limbaugh on 22 different stations at the same time in the middle of the day. It's very hard to find somebody who speaks for the rest of us.

No.Wrong fucking answer.Don't even try to compare Rachel Maddow to Pigman Limbaugh or that other slimy bag of shit Sean Hannity..

You see, unlike them lying scumbags, who are ROUTINELY caught in their lies,Rachel actually researches her topic. She provides proof and and often, uses their own words to show what lying fucks they are. That's how she arrives at her ''asinine'' conclusions.

Just because FOX News has made a habit out of distorting the truth/lying,don't assume everyone else does it..There are a few,Rachel among them that isn't a liar, and knows what she's talking about ..

But hey,go on and fondle yourself at Keiths departure.Soon enough, there wont be any voices of dissent on the t.v..Won't that be great? All right wing ...All the time..

Oh happy day.

What....that is not what I heard on this clip...listen to the very end:

Mr. Olbermann signed a four-year contract extension in 2008

Thanks "frankfrank" and "Knucklehead". You both echo my sentiments--I will miss seeing "Countdown". For me, it was an enjoyable antidote to the Southern, religious right-wing viewpoints that I am all too often confronted with at work.

What a shame... as such, I for one, will not tune into MSNBC except to view their last bit of intelligent news media; Rachel Maddow.

I found Countdown to be a very subpar show, which was why I stopped watching it. Same guests all the time ... never having anyone on that you disagree with (for reasons I can speculate), immature acts like puppet theatre, Olbermann frequently taking time off the show throughout the year, etc.

It was just, in my opinion, not a very good show and nor was it very interesting. Combine that with Olbermann's obvious enormous ego, and that gave me even more of a low opinion.

So it is definitely for the best that he leaves, and I have a lot more respect for O'Donnel, whom I feel is a lot more intelligent than Olbermann and is not afraid to battle guests.

Even though this may have had no influence from Comcast, it will be interesting regardless to see what influence Comcast has with the direction of the entire network going forward, since from what I understand, they are considered a "Conservative" company. If they do move the network to the Right, this is a definitely opportunity for CNN to rise, since they also seem to want to get more partisan due to lagging ratings.
