A teeenager who was on his way to behead a British soldier with a 12in knife when he was arrested, has been found guilty of preparing a terrorist act.

Brusthom Ziamani, 19, was also carrying a hammer and an "Islamic flag" when he was arrested in London in August 2014.

The court heard he had been inspired by the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby in 2013, researched Army cadet bases and boasted of a plot to "kill soldiers".

Ziamani, of Camberwell, London, will be sentenced on 20 March.

He was arrested in east London at about 16:30 BST on 19 August as part of a joint police and MI5 intelligence operation.

Earlier that day, police say he visited his former girlfriend, where he showed her the knife and hammer and told her he intended to attack and kill soldiers.

Commander Richard Walton, from the Metropolitan Police's counter-terrorism command, said the teenager's plot "starkly illustrates" one of the threats facing the UK.

"Ziamani was an impressionable young man who became radicalised then rapidly developed an extremist, violent mindset," he said.

"Over a series of months, he ultimately developed a desire to carry out a terrorist attack on British soldiers."

Mr Walton added that police had probably prevented a "horrific terrorist attack taking place on the streets of London".

At least he won't be chopping any heads for a while.

Discuss.

As an ex-serviceman i have been following this case very carefully.

It seems to me that the "foot soldiers" who become radical by attending mosques with radical clerics, appear to be young men often unemployed and very angry with their lot in life.

After the horrific slaying of Lee Rigby i believe it is only a matter of time before one of these barbarians succeeds again...

When I read these articles I can't help but wonder how they plan to get the head off someone with a 12 inch knife. From what I've read removing someone's head isn't as easy as it's made out in the propaganda videos ISIL are flooding the internet with. I remember researching it for a story idea I had, and in the end I decided my murderer character was going to use a bullet rather than beheading his victims.

I do wonder why and how these people are so disaffected that they're buying into the ISIL dialogue, and what - if any - role the media's constant articles disseminating their message is playing. Scarily enough, it's obviously finding an audience in Western countries.

I remember when i was young (late teen early 20s), the bible was a very inspiring and addictive book to read because of the warfare and magic everyhwere in the book. I'm sure the same thing with the Quaran. Now i believe in attacking and trying to get rid off these religious books somehow by turning them into fairly tales.

And isn't that always the case though?
And not just with radicalised Muslims
Look around you and many disaffected youths will turn to all sorts of criminal or anti socialbehaviour as a way to rebel against what they consider to be the people who have let them down or not supported them.
While radicalised Muslims is the latest and most dangerous expression of disaffection, it is not new

But i thought religion was suppose to teach them how to be a good person.
And not about warfare. :?

I understand your view, but how many disaffected youths from run down housing estates carry out such wanton acts of murder in daylight and in full view of members of the public in the name of their god??

It has been confirmed that his sentencing will be next month.

He will be sentenced to the pen where he will have the opportunity to preach his hatred to other disgruntled men.

I don't understand why prisoners have that much freedom.
Prisoners should be able to reform, otherwise they are as good as dead in jail.

In the UK prison is like a hotel.

Yeah, and he'll be treated like a king in our UK prisons.

On taxpayers money.

^From my understanding, convicted criminals adhere to their own particular code; the mad, the sad and the bad.

I doubt he will be treated like a King...

^ But we as taxpayers are still required too feed, toilet and provide for him.

Yes Max we are, the punitive legal action of hanging, was abolished in the 1960's.

Would you have hanging reintroduced for the myriad of crimes that it was freely used for?

Personally I would have him booted from the country. That's what I think.
