Bush tax cuts extended for two years.

I never was in favor of bailing out the banks.

If the Obama Regime had sent the money, several hundreds or more, to each taxpayer; the economy would have been bailed out, along with a lot of in debt individuals, and (indirectly) eventually the banks too. It should have been funneled through the public.

Yeah, but the banks have paid back all that money at a profit to the US govt. Quite an uncomfortable fact faux-conservatives love to dodge.

Funny how generous you are giving money to the public, but let me guess opposed to "Cash For Clunkers" a tax payment directly to Joe Q. Public.

Don't be silly. As more and more jobs are sent to India and Thailand, as the rich stockpile more money and the middleclass is wiped out, unemployment will rise to the 12-15% range.

And we'll have those tax cuts to thank ..|

You know conservatives big plan for fixing 12% unemployment, right?

Yup..... MORE tax cuts.

Then what the hell is this Administration doing?

If what you say is true, there will be a GOP sweep in 2012 and they'll be in charge for 10 years or more.

Does your side know anything about politics and governing?

Well "my side" just fooled a bunch of clueless tea baggers to fight for a nice tax cut for me.

And now I can pay my cleaners and gardener less.

So yeah... I'd say my "side" knows just what we're doing.

I know you're being facetious. :-)

But, seriously, what are your people doing about fixing things?

They've only gotten worse since your side won.

OK, this right-leaning whipping boy is off to watch some fun TV.

You lefties will just have to have your usual circle jerk rants by yourselves...

I know you're being facetious. :-)

Am I?

I mean... why should I care about anyone else?

You keep going on about my "side" like we're playing football. We're all Americans, right? Shouldn't we be working together to fix the country? Because that's not what's going on in Washington. At all.

No, both "sides" are just doing whatever they can to screw each other over in the next election. They don't care about the people at all.

So I'm going to stop giving a shit, too. I got mine... screw you if you don't have yours.

It drives you to that doesn't it? It's as Thomas Friedman says in his Op/Ed "From WikiChina"

Fair Use Excerpt:

We have a joke in the embassy: “When someone calls you from China today it sounds like they are next door. And when someone calls you from next door in America, it sounds like they are calling from China!” Those of us who worked in China’s embassy in Zambia often note that Africa’s cellphone service was better than America’s.

But the Americans are oblivious. They travel abroad so rarely that they don’t see how far they are falling behind. Which is why we at the embassy find it funny that Americans are now fighting over how “exceptional” they are. Once again, we are not making this up. On the front page of The Washington Post on Monday there was an article noting that Republicans Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee are denouncing Obama for denying “American exceptionalism.” The Americans have replaced working to be exceptional with talking about how exceptional they still are. They don’t seem to understand that you can’t declare yourself “exceptional,” only others can bestow that adjective upon you.

And those several hundred dollars would go back to credit card companies and banks, barely putting a dent in the average american's debt.

And by the way, the republicans just gave Oprah an $11 million tax cut next year. Now how many jobs will this money create?

Or better yet, will she even notice the difference on her bank statements?

Or better yet, will she even notice the difference on her bank statements?

but But... she can now hire MORE people.

Because you know.. with her 30 billion dollars, she could only afford so many employees and staff.

Like All Americans... Oprah is struggling in this economy. Lindsay Graham Says so!!

Meh.

I work and get paid in Singaporean dollars, you know ones backed with hard assets. The Singaporean economy is expected to finish up this year growing 14.9%. And the USA?

Singapore? You mean one of 17 countries that couldn't screw up the courage to vote against the UN resolution that approves of the summary execution of gay people? Did they find that a difficult decision, for some reason? WTF? As screwed up as we are in terms of our finances and taxes, we stood against this measure. Fuck them. Money isn't everything.

Kulindahr, gridlock is a good thing. Or would you rather have one party rule? When power changes hands, and the opposite side has power, many will be glad when there is gridlock.

After watching both parties and what they did when they had control of both congress and the White House, I'm firmly of the opinion that the worst thing for America is for EITHER party to get what it fully wants.

Exactly! This is how it's supposed to work. Otherwise we would have one party rule, just doing whatever it wanted with nothing to stop it. The idea was to prevent dictatorship. As much as some on here would love to see that kind of power in democrat hands, I'm glad we still are not there yet.

This means more money in the private sector floating around and actually doing good. You know, creating jobs.

For the upper crust, it doesn't mean that at all -- in fact, it doesn't mean that for anyone, because this is just a cut back to where things were. Not a single job will be created thanks to this legislation.

Well no. It means more money sitting around in billionaire's bank accounts doing nothing. Like it's been doing since the tax cuts started.
. . . .

If this meant money in the "private sector," how come it hasn't worked that way for the last 8 or so years? What makes you think it's magically going to start trickling down now?

Correct. We're far below the point where tax cuts for the wealthy stimulate the economy. For that to happen, tax rates have to be high enough (on the rich) that it's harming the economy, and we're not there.

It hasn't meant many more jobs because the vehicle of investment the wealthy prefer are financial games -- like the ones that got us into this mess. But it has meant some, by keeping money in the hands of the people who actually spend it.

So, stealing money from the rich, to give to the poor slobs who don't contribute a whit to society, and who will spend it on rent, Pepsi and Cheetos...

That will solve society's ills.

If those "poor slobs" "don't contribute a whit", then how does money in their hands float around the private sector and do some good, as you said above? Fact is, those poor slobs low on the economic ladder are the economy, because almost all of the money they get goes to buy things. Spending it on "rent, Pepsi and Cheetos" keeps the money flowing.

The private sector, and corporations, are sitting on money because they're in total doubt about the future, the tax structure of the next few years, and what the marxists in power will do next.

There's some truth in that. But more, they're sitting on money as an over-reaction to what we just went through.

"Marxists" in power? Not even close.

The weak conservative argument that money sitting in banks allows banks to lend more is complete BULLSHIT. Banks can lend $25 dollars for every actual dollar they have locked away.

So again, how will a billionaire or millionaire stimulate the economy with little demand from the majority middle class?

I'd say you've argued against yourself: if a dollar in the bank means twenty-five to loan, then a billion in the banks would mean twenty-five billion to loan -- which means money sitting in the bank is a good thing.
BTW, someone associated with the Fed recently said that ratio should 1:10, not 1:25, because the bans wouldn't have been in such trouble if they'd had that bigger cushion -- not sure I understand that, if it's a required reserve, but... whatever.

Then give the poor and middle class a bit of HOPE maybe?

Let them think some jobs are opening up. That would create your "demand".

But even they have given up on the Obama plan for the future.

We'll have 9% and 10% unemployment for the next two years...

What jobs are going to be opening up? The wealthy don't create jobs -- they haven't since manufacturing ceased to be the investment of choice. Now, they create financial instruments... the same genus of critter that led to this mess.

Want to give the lower portion of the economic ladder some hope? Forget the tax cut for the rich; in fact increase it to the Gipper's level -- and sock the new revenues into infrastructure. People here got hope when a stretch of US 101 that has been worse to drive on than a raw-rock logging road was not merely resurfaced, but torn up down to the foundations and build up to modern standards -- so those motor homes and freight trucks won't be shaking it to pieces. Shoddy infrastructure contributes a lot to general public malaise; fixing it will help, both by lifting spirits because we're not driving on crap any more, and providing jobs -- and training, too; the amount of highway work getting done around here meant that contractors had to hire extra people, and train them.

As for unemployment... if we drop out of the 9%-10% range within five years, I'll be amazed.
