Yep! This country will also get more democratic as time passes by. More and more of the younger generation will get to vote. In the far future, I believe that the majority of people in this new generation will not teach their children that being gay is wrong. If it's at 63% right now then it might even be 70% in 4 or 8 years for that age range. Acceptance will only grow for us, it's just too bad that some of us won't be around or will be old when the majority of the country is accepting.

Those people 65 and older will be around for maybe 40 years. People 30-64 will be around for probably up to 70 years. After 70 years, probably at least 80% of the people will be accepting of gays. Thanks for posting that, I never thought of it that way. If we work hard, maybe we can reduce those years by half making it 35 years.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I don't want to see an avalanche of people saying that "Obama should have gone to California to tell people to vote no."

There's no guarantee that would have turned the tide.

And I have no doubt that videos of him saying to "vote no on 8" would have gone viral, and been the focus of Republican last-minute ads in the swing states.

It's possible that California would STILL have no continuation of gay marriage, and I feel it is CERTAIN that the U.S. and the planet would be stuck with four years of McCain and Palin.

It's VERY heartening to see the age breakdown. I've never seen a similar age breakdown before regarding "gay and related" issues. Change is definitely in the air, even if 2008 wasn't the precise time for it yet. I assume the age statistics in California are similar to nationwide feelings about it...

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Ignorant bastard.

"Oh yeah the have more traditional family values"

So love, acceptance, and support aren't family values.

I agree with what a straight guy as comment saying that he is not gonna marry his girlfriend cause it sickens him that he will be apart of something that has such strong hate and isn't equal.

People really should just not marry anymore since obviously the church and religion is such a bunch of fuel for hate. Who the hell wants to be apart of that.

I can understand the celebration aspect. But there are other ways.

Maybe it's time we come up with an alternative to marriage. Do we really want to become part of what is against us?

I know we should have the right to if we want..

But it's just sickening.

But the polls aren't done yet.

YEAH.

Once those stubborn old bastards die then the young people can take over and run things right.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

86% and no change in margins.

I'm not giving up, which is why I haven't slept yet despite having class in two hours and a full day of work and grad school in front of me. But I'm not going to miss an opportunity to point out the level of mediocrity that's been pumping through America from my birth to the present. It's fantastic and unbelievable that a non-white candidate made it in as a president, but there are some SEVERE issues that haven't been addressed in this country before they all go around patting themselves on the back.

It's a great day for African Americans and America in general, but considering that it took 8 years of crap, a destroyed economy, our demolished reputation, and two atrocious wars for Americans to wake the fuck up and elect a capable leader while going nuts over the color of his skin and labeling him an African American while seemingly ignoring his interracial background certainly says something about how smugly people should be congratulating themselves and its country for its progressiveness.

Now all the conservatives who don't understand racial dynamics and social power will tout this as the end of racism when all they've taken is a beginner's step they should have gotten over a decade ago if not more. And if that isn't evidenced by their talk about diversity and equality while an anti-gay adoption and marriage proposal is passing like water through fingers in Florida, well I don't know what more to say.

I'm an ardent Obama supporter, and I was thrilled to hear him mention gays in his acceptance speech (dismayed that he didn't mention Arabs or Muslims, given how ridiculously awful they were treated by both campaigns), but I couldn't help but raise my hand during his talk about anyone who still questions America as the land of equality and opportunity. What's happening with these proposals is evidence enough of how remedial America is in social justice compared to its equivalent peers.

And while it's a great day to celebrate a milestone in racial struggle, I can't ignore that a minority is rising above its history of oppression while another is thoughtlessly crushed underfoot.

That's my I-haven't-slept rant.

We're still at 52% -- 48% at 86%.

That's a very good idea.. We could start like a "civil-partnership campaign". If marriage is so exclusive in places like California, let everybody, gay or straight, be part of something more inclusive, welcoming, harmonious, and romantic...

How romantic can a wedding for straight couples be when you know that its "exclusivity" has give cause to the discrimination of tons of people in this world!!!

The stupidest part is that it's fine for minors to abort without consent, but not for same-sex marriage. Don't even bring religion into this you bloody people.. it's just you and your homophobia, or other mental issues!

And that is one of the most pernicious statement I've made in years... :(

I feel like crying if it passes!

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

It's time to get passed this marriage business. We want marriage in order to to get "rights" that married people have. If we get the rights by calling it a civil union, who gives a shit? If you can't win on the proposition in CA, it ain't happening anywhere. Why do we keep having elections to prove a point if we lose every time we do it?

It's time to move on.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

It's sad that the same-sex marriage bans passing will be the rain on the Obama victory parade for the gay community.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Not shocked that we lost, even to this close vote... rights for minorties have never been decided by the majority, sorry!

No; there is no alternative. Can black people come up with an alternative to sitting at the front of the bus? Should you call Obama the "Civil Leader" to respect those racists who could never accept a black man as President?

I think instead of finding a way to be a second class citizen in your own country, you should try moving to ours. Gay Californians should move to Canada, where the church and religion are still trying to fuel hate, but with luck and hard work we have been able to smother that instead of igniting it, and equality rules for all.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I am going with Bankside on this one. Derek and I have been looking for jobs in Canada. I for one, have no intention of paying taxes to a country that gives me no rights and writes discrimination into their consitutions.

Nice graphic.

A lot of this is education and a lot of this is age.

I have no doubt that Obama, the most liberal senator, is for gay marriage. Unfortunately there are a lot of older and uneducated people in this country that vote.

Time will heal all wounds.

Wait this out gay men and women. I feel bad for the older gays but dammit change is coming hopefully in my lifetime (I'm in my 20's).
