Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Gay rights activists were shocked when a public opinion poll published this month found 47 per cent of respondents favoured the measure, with 42 per cent opposed and 10 per cent undecided. The result was based on polls conducted through the summer in this usually liberal-minded state.
A spokesman for "No on 8", the group leading the charge against the proposed amendment, said it had been caught off-guard by a television advertisement blitz by gay marriage opponents. "They have raised a tremendous amount of money, and as a result they have significantly out-bought us on TV," said Steve Schmidt. "Every time somebody sees one of our ads, they've seen two of theirs."

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I feel like I need to get a group of people together and have banners made that say something like....

Just Because Your Chruch
Tells You To Hurt People

That Are Not Like You
Does Not Mean That You
Have To Do It.

Please Vote No On Prop 8

and then stand in front of every Mormon and Catholic Church in Calfornia on Sundays.

Exactly....from speaking with some of the supporters of 8, they tell me that they know that nomrally admit that they will eventually lose but what they want to do is slow down the changes they don't approve of as much as possible. That is so wrong on so many levels.

Hollywood coming to the rescue.... ..|

Battling to save the right to same-sex marriage in what is expected to be a close state vote next month, California gay rights backers are turning to Hollywood celebrities for help at a major fundraiser.

Actress and singer Barbra Streisand is expected at the event on Tuesday and singers Melissa Etheridge and Mary J. Blige will perform, organizers said on Thursday.
Supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle will host the event at his Beverly Hills home, with a private $25,000-a-plate dinner. Among other entertainment figures planning to attend are actor/director Rob Reiner.

But please keep giving!!!!

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I made an additional $50 donation just now. I also signed up to work at my local phone bank on Sunday. It's going to be very close, but I don't intend to lose without putting up a fight!

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I also sent out an email to everyone in my email address book encouraging them to vote no on prop 8. I also told my story and how this change in the California law would hurt me personally.

I was very pleasantly surprised to hear from so many of my friends and family who all stated they were committed to voting no on prop 8, and many of them also donated money to the no on prop 8 campaign.

If everyone who is concerned about this proposition took the time to do something concrete (donate money, donate time, talk to family and friends) then I don't see how we can lose.

As a broke college student, I donated $20... oh well, guess I will not be eating this week lol...

I have been emailing friends with no on 8 videos and links. I have been telling my personal story and asking people to consider their votes. I have also been telling them to mass email their friends as well.

It only takes 10 minutes to write an email to all of your friends urging them to do the same thing. Please start email chains against prop 8.

We cannot let this pass. We don't need a Brown v Board of Education decision. We need our civil liberties now, not 50 years later!

AWESOME!!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We can't afford to lose this one. There is way too much at stake.

I love that when people donate now, that the donation is doubled. I was thinking that if we had other people willing to offer double the donations at night clubs, online, etc, up to ....whatever amount before the expriation date of the other doubling, that would actually result in a quadrupling the donation. So a $50 would be doubled and then doubled again...making it $200 in donations. Just an idea.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I went down to Tiger Heat in WeHo last night and they had voter registration there to try to get more folks to vote NO on 8. Was a great idea, in my opinion.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Fuck this shit. 95% of 'gay' men I know couldn't care less about anything other than sucking their next 'straight' guy and yet we want to pretend like we're a victimized minority? We only care about each other when we're getting discriminated against? That's fucked up.

I'm sorry fellas but the battle of gay rights is conquered almost entirely from within, not without. Not relying on laws to protect you, straight girls (and guys) to stick up for you, or idealizing gay male culture, or getting a professional job and then pretending like your life is okay now because you go to a gay bar once in awhile and don't live in a shitty small ass town anymore. Do you even know what your own sexuality is (for sure) yourself yet? When you hear something that's honestly homophobic in real life, do you still speak out or do you sexualize that shit and jack off to the abuse because that's how you've been conditioned to operate? This is why all this sexuality/gender politics is so fucked up to begin with.

Especially when you consider how marriage was founded in the first place.

Half of you no-nuts have no business speaking on these issues or supporting things when you're unwilling to do the work, everyday 24/7, to combat sexual mindgame politics. I'm not saying I am! That's entirely exhausting and erection-kiling. You ever think they're luring you into a game that you cannot win?

The problem is marriage is, matter of fact, a historically conservative institution that is nothing like laughing with Kathy Griffin with your friends and then having some wholesome politically correct gay sex. As policy, gay men wanted to change the systems, not 'just be like everybody else' that's how the bigger stronger movements happened. That's how 'gay' became more than an insult, if only for a day. So I'm not sure what you really want anymore as a 'gay community', realistically.

If I don't ask these tough, maybe not-so-nice questions who will?

I care more about my inner peace and fixing up the psychological fuckups of other gay men than a straight man signing a paper telling me that 'Ooh you're fixed now!' =) I didn't start or create this institution. Why do I want to be a part of it? Why are you still relying on heterosexual men for your own self-worth? I am not a gay ghettoist, but that is exactly what you guys are doing here, constantly. It's soul-destroying. Where is the "Pride" indeed? Where is the true connectiveness?

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Thanks for the updates Matthew. Especially the one under your siggy. I sent a link to that article to the Obama campaign web site asking for him to take a stand. It would be sad to think that Obama wins this election by ignoring and harming the basic civil rights of a minority group of people in this country. I sent links to the story to a couple news organizations. I'm hoping that they mention it to get Obama to speak up about it.

I was happily shocked when I saw the Bakersfied article. That area has historically been the area where all the hate starts from. So seeing that is a huge step in the right direction.

As for slnattak, how dare you lump 95% of us togther like that. Just because the group of people you know are psychologically screwed up does not mean that we all are. All that your post tells me is that you have a lot of issues that you need to deal with. Please take note and don't use your own issues against us. We don't have time for it right now. We are busy fighting to keep our civil rights and we don't need gay people going around trying to stop us right now.

Here is a link to their recommendations: http://egpnews.com/?p=2625

Bilingual East-LA Newsgroup Encourages a “No” Vote on Proposition 8

Eastern Group Publications is a media outlet that is likely unfamiliar to most Californians. But this newsgroup prints ten local newspapers that reach a demographic that may not see itself represented by the Los Angeles Times or the Daily News. These bilingual weeklies targeted at a mostly Hispanic readership have a combined distribution of well over 100,000:

  • Bell Gardens Sun
  • City Terrace Comet
  • Commerce Comet
  • East Los Angeles Brooklyn-Belvedere Comet
  • Eastside Sun (Boyle Heights, East LA)
  • Mexican American Sun
  • Montebello Comet
  • Monterey Park Comet
  • Northeast Sun (Highland Park, Cypress Park, Glassell Park, Eagle Rock, El Sereno, Lincoln Heights)
  • Wyvernwood Chronicle

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I had the television on yesterday for a few hours and noticed that most of the prop 8 commercials were for yes on 8. I was not home today so I don't know what it was like.

However, I went to the movies in Pasadena and I did notice No On Prop 8 signs in front of some of the beautiful churches in Pasadena. :D

I found that surprising. I have not seen any signs in front of the local mormon church. However, dkonfrost told me that they do have yes on 8 signs on the bulletin boards inside the catholic church that he went to.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I wish that we could find a way to get the California African American churches to change their opinion of Prop 8.

I was thinking about sending emails to them that said something like:

"Wouldn't it be an ironic and sad thing if Obama became President by inadvertantly pushing a minority group of people to the back of the bus?"

What do you guys think we could do to get them to reconsider their support for Prop 8? But then again, I don't want to make things worse either.

What to do....what to do...

we appreciate all of the help.

I just got a call from Yes on Prop 8 to try and convince me to support it. Another friend told me that she was called as well. It looks like they are trying to call every voter.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts
