Time Magazine:
California and Beyond: The Battle Over Gay Marriage

http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/200810...gaymarriage;_ylt=ArnyS6yFLeAu_MJHzbLKoukDW7oF

California's fight over the initiative to ban gay marriage (popularly called Prop. 8) has attracted its share of million-dollar donors. The big contributors in the fight to approve Prop. 8 include the Knights of Columbus ($1 million); the National Organization for Marriage ($500,000); Dr. John Templeton, the son of the philanthropist Sir John Templeton ($450,000); and Focus on the Family ($500,000). Fighting against approval of Prop. 8 are celebrities like Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw ($50,000 each), as well as former GOP U.S. Senate candidate Michael Huffington ($100,000); Robert Haas, chairman emeritus of Levi Straus ($200,000); and the California Teachers Union Issues PAC ($2 million). The media battle has been intense. Talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres (who had vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden on her show to oppose Prop. 8) has thrown $100,000 to buy TV time to fight the ban. Meanwhile, proponents of Prop. 8 - conservative groups and churches among them - have put up their own ads.

Demonstration at PCC focuses on defeat of Prop. 8

http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/ci_10781272?source=rss

The hour-long rally took place during a lunch break. After gathering in the center quad area, a line of students snaked its way through campus before marching down down Colorado Boulevard, where traveling motorists honked their horns in support of their efforts.

A representative from the "No on 8" campaign said PCC's rally was just one of several student-organized rallies planned for this month.

"It is not enough to vote no," she said. "Be visible, be active. Help with the phone banks ... it is about taking action."

OC residents give $6.2 million to support Prop. 8

$1.4 million of Orange County’s money comes from the Santa Ana office of the National Organization for Marriage, a nonprofit organized for the sole purpose of fighting same-sex marriage.

Fieldstead & Co. ($900,000), the personal foundation of Home Savings heir Howard Fieldstead Ahmanson and his wife, Roberta Green Ahmanson; Former state senator Robert Hurtt Jr. ($275,000); the Evangelical Christian Credit Union (ECCU) in Brea ($100,000); healthcare executives Donald G. Laws and Steve Samuelian ($100,000 each); and MHI Real Company (oil mining) president Larry Smith ($75,646.18). All of them support Prop. 8.

Etheridge, Blige, Spielberg, Streisand & More Raise $3.9M For No On Prop 8

http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/e...sand___More_Raise__3_9M_For_No_On_Prop_8.html

But please remember, every donation makes a difference....please don't stop donating. I have not. If prop 8 passes, it will push back our fight for equaltiy for years and year. That is not something that I'm willing to risk. And to put a price on that... my rights cannot be bought.

Don't forget to donate to No On Prop 8: :)

Newest Commercial

I just donated more money!

Your Turn!

:D

I have had the tv on the last few hours and have seen more of our commercials than theirs...at least twice as many times on the channel that I'm watching during this time of the day. The commercial that we are playing is the one above. And the other side is still playing that commercial that our commercial is saying it wrong. ..|

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I just want to say that it really has been an amazing thing to see our gay community, friends, and supporters all come together to fight discrimination. I really have never seen anything like this before. And I'm proud to be a part of it. I don't know if you guys have been on myspace recently, but people are speaking out against prop 8 everywhere you look. To see the people on JUB come together, as well as the other web sites. And to think we have done this in an economy that is doing so poorly. It is just awesome!!!

From the bottom of my heart, thank you everyone for giving a damn! One good thing to come out of all of this is it has really strengthened our community.

Here is to hoping the Prop 8 fails. It is looking better at the moment that it will fail.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I'm finally hearing much better news about "No on 8" than I had been hearing! The TV report said that the poll was taken earlier this month (HOW early?), but the past couple weeks I'd been hearing that the "Yes on 8" movement had gotten a lot of traction, and was now ahead.

A few hours ago on Sirius Left (satellite radio) I heard a mention that "No on 8" is again polling [or pulling, LOL] ahead! This seems to be brand-new information, but I haven't read or heard anything else to verify this.

It's also good to see that "EVERY MAJOR NEWSPAPER" has come out against Proposition 8. But probably the best news I've heard, was in that San Diego Channel 8 report, at the end, where they said both sides have raised more than $26 million.

The last I had heard, I think only about a week ago, the "No" donations were something like $5 or $6 million behind the "Yes" contributions. That gap has disappeared.

There is indeed hope here! If you live in California, please vote. Heck...wherever you live, please vote! My request goes out to Democrats, Republicans and independents - to everybody who is eligible to vote.

Everything the other side seems to say is either a lie or a threat. I think that it is very sad. Most of these people consider themselves to be religious. I think that they just hide behind religion to justify their own bigotry. Religions can be interpreted numerous ways and these people choose to interpret it in ways to make us the enemy.

I was trying to discuss the issue with a supporter of 8 online and one of the things that he told me was that they want to end the separation of church and state. That just goes to show you that we all have an agenda and we both find each others scarry.

My agenda is to help push for equality as quickly as possible. The sooner people that are gay are treated fairly and equally, as human beings we all deserve, the less harassment gays will face, the less gay teens will be kicked out of their homes, and the less suicides we will have. So yes, it is vital to pursue equality as quickly as possible, not just because it is the right thing to do, which is enough reason in itself, but also because it will make the lives of many people better. We are not lesser human beings and I will never accept anything less than equality.
