Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I think a lot fo this "it's the hispanic/black" voters business is steeped in misunderstanding on both sides. But I won't get into that.

All I'm here to say is that I feel like I'm going to throw up, literally. I'm so thrilled about Obama, but I just can't go to bed until I know about Prop 8. The other anti-gay propositions in other states are already going sour...

God I feel sick. I may really lose what little shred of respect I have for heterosexuals...

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

It's not over yet. You give in to easy. I know you're a cynic at heart, but try to see the big picture here. We have an African American President and some said that would never happen. We have an out and proud gay Congressman in CO. And hey, these old folks have to die sometime. We do have a chance at progress and equality. If Prop 8 passes, so be it. We'll find another approach.

Exactly.

In another 39 years, many of these 'old' supporters of the anti-gay movement will be long gone, making way for a newer, more liberal and open-minded generation. In time, we can win. Patience.

I know you're just venting and I completely understand the need to do so, but you do realize that some homos voted against gay marriage as well, right? Likewise, some heteros are very supportive. But yeah, I get that you're pissed.

(*8*) for Metta and (*8*) for Matthew

You guys did everything you could possibly do to defeat Prop. 8. Thanks for keeping us all informed on what was going on. Thanks also for keeping us motivated.

I know several CA JUBBERS campaigned, voted, encouraged their friends to vote, donated money, went the whole nine yards. You guys are awesome.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Loophole?

It's a stretch, but prop 8 clearly defines marriage as between a man and a woman, right? We have definitions in the dictionary we don't follow to the letter, and can mean things to certain people.

So? It's defined as between a man and a woman. And? Does that say it's not according to homosexuality, either? Just because it's a definition doesn't mean it's all it means.

Just a musing...

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Gay married couples face legal limbo if Prop. 8 passes

Opponents of Proposition 8 could also challenge the entire initiative in federal court, and the ruling there could be appealed all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. If the high court found the measure constitutional, the California Supreme Court would still probably determine the fate of existing marriages.

Yes, let's all wait until we're 106 like Ann Nixon Cooper.

I understand that some homos voted against gay marriage because they don't know what they're talking about. Stupidity, irresponsibility, and self-interest knows no sexual orientation. Liekwise, I know my relatives in CA voted no.

I'm just tired and I feel physically ill. I think I've almost thrown up four times.

At least the latest poll is down a percent for Yes and up a percent for No.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Damn people stop acting like it's over.

The final results aren't in yet.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I am seriously thinking the same thing Jasun

I try so hard each day to find something good about christianity.

But all I see is extremists, conservatives, and people who want to conform the world to their safe fucking little bubble and expect everyone to act and live like they do.

It sickens me.

Do they even know the meaning of "Freedom"?

But I know I don't truly mean this..I think.

But yes there are some gays who voted yes to this because they don't know the impact it has on everyone..

Ugh.

I'm not giving up though.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

This fight isn't over until we win it.

THEN it's over.

Oh.. and fuck all Christians.

Corrections: fuck all Christians who support Prop 8. There's plenty who don't. No need to make more enemies than already exist! [-X

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

The trouble is the more results come in the more the 4 to 6% deficit stays the same so it looks like the CNN exit polls, which showed Prop 8 would be narrowly defeated were wrong.

I guess the next step is to challenge the result legally. I did read some arguments that voter propositions not initiated by the legislature couldn't be used to make significant changes to the California constitution, which kinda makes sense. But I don't know whether these kinds of legal arguments will get anywhere.

So that presumably leaves bringing another proposition back to the voters at some point.

The good news for that is that it looks as though it was mainly the older farts (no offense intended), who voted against gay marriage, and as younger voters increase so will support for gay marriage.

And even with this, what looks increasingly like a, bad result is a significant improvement on last time achieved within a relatively short period.

Also, of course, Obama has promised full marriage rights and benefits for civil unions and this proposition doesn't invalidate California's domestic partnerships so all of that should help set the stage for next time.

Hopefully, some shit will stick to the Mormon and the Catholic Church for their role in this. It's defies common sense that so much out of state money can be used to flood a state election result like this. The Mormons protecting traditional marriage. Absurd.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Observe Obama Campaign: Emulate.

That is, if we need to.
The margin of For-8 is at present less than the margin for-Prop 22 only 4 years ago.

Broad democratic education on a number of topics might be what we would need if it passes.

These flat-earth people have got bunches of defamatory videos that they mis-educate their congregations with; we need to counter them.

And an anti-defamation legal campaign might be another fruitful strategy.

Hopefully, in the morning, we won't need this.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Well, so much for that. The theme for this election was hope and change and the majority of Americans proved that they're ready to be progressive 20 years too late instead of progressive in the now. Why am I not surprised?

It's like congratulating a lazy child for opening their book when they were supposed to have read it and started three more several years ago. I applaud the mediocrity and I'm sure they feel pretty accomplished. Gross. I'm done.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Ow :(

That sux, is it over?

So close.

And I just wanna say this... all those who voted yes on prop 8... you people are not humans, you are selfish bastards and I'm sorry to interrupt the celebration, but your cause is lost... gays will be allowed to marry, maybe not in the next couple of years but your money cannot stop the future...

Stop acting like all hope is gone.

Cause it's not.

The people against the bill is only 3,000 points behind but they are 84% to be doing done.

UNTIL IT'S 100% IT'S STILL POSSIBLE.

After all the work that's been put into fighting against it why should giving up be even considered right now.

Things have progressed so much. I agree that they haven't enough. But they will over the years. When this bill came out everyone was scared like hell but people decided they were gonna take it and have done alot to fight against it.

Because it's not right that their bastard christians get their freaking way cause they use religion like a drug. And it's not right that people vote unaware of what the bill even means and that some people out there believe that heterosexual couples should have more rights then homosexual since we just got a freaking black president.

How messed up is that.

Is this really a battle between gay marriage or no gay marriage.

Or is it just an alternate election of this debate. In some ways I think it is.

But don't give up yet.

I'd love to see on the news couples getting married cause some people have been waiting a real long time for it. And it might be worse for those who are already married.

Just wait til the final results are in okay?

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

That's the spirit D-Base :D

But damn..

It seems whenever No catches gains another 1k yes gets a 1k apart.

They seem to be staying 3k apart.

There has got to be someway for no to surpass that..

Come on California.
