Until a few weeks ago, the backlash to BMW's all-new, all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle, the iX, had been headline news.

Recent events not withstanding, BMW is still headlining the heat from angry, disgusted BMW fans over the continued "ugly-fest", from BMW's Design Studio.
At the start of February, the anger aimed at BMW was calling into question the planning of future vehicles as BMW falls behind its competition in the race to an all-electric fleet.

Exterior design is not the most important feature of any vehicle, but you do want to attract customers, as well as the admiration of bystanders.

Enter Arnold Schwarzenegger and Salma Hayek, as Zeus & Hera, in their Super Bowl ad to give the BMW iX an improved image - maybe even a little love.

It does beg the question, does an electric vehicle need to be "funky" to attract customers? How about affordable?

I love my X1---I will miss the sexy sound of the engine---but this is the future.

My only issue is no one is talking about the bad fires if electric cars crash.

Car fires are dramatic, but electric car fires are on a whole other level.

Looking at this post I thought, "Haven't we been here before during the Chris Bangle years?" Reviewing the pictures on the accompanying attachments, I was surprised how inconsequential and conservative many of the designs were. It would seem that Adrian van Hooydonk, Bangle's protégé (?) is even more fond of controversy than his former boss.
One thing I can say is that BMW 5, 6 and 7 sales are down in Los Angeles as MBZ sales of competing models rise. I rarely see the former on the street. I myself moved from years of driving 5 sedans to E and C coupes.

Everything you've said Latimer can be confirmed by countless BMW owners and former owners.
Design can be one factor in any car purchase, but increasing complexity, combined with decreasing reliability, has hurt BMW tremendously.

Electrification actually benefits large luxury vehicles more compared to smaller vehicles, yet BMW's tech overkill negates the advantages of going all-electric.

Buyers who can afford a BMW can also exercise the luxury of Choice - and drive off in any number of alternatives.
Going Electric doesn't have to be a freak show!
