And was, before the Feds stepped in to resolve the land war between Michigan and Ohio. Michigan lost an important port and got all this apparently-worthless land (we call it the Upper Peninsula), and was generally regarded to have lost big on the deal...
...until the vast mineral resources of the UP were discovered.

One of my favorite clever acronyms...when I was in college (Canadians read "at university"), the best professional conference in my field was put on by the Linguistics Association of Canada and the United States, acronym LACUS; 'lacus' is Latin for "lake," and the symbol of the organization was simply a picture of the Great Lakes.
Of course, it didn't hurt that a picture of the Great Lakes is also a negative-space picture of Michigan...
